Henley School’s leaky library is so badly damaged by water that it may have to be demolished, only ten years after it was opened.Principal, John Armstrong, initiated an investigation into the water-tightness of the $984,000 library and learning cen-tre soon after he arrived at the school in 2009. “Compared with a lot of other countries around the world our beaches are good, how-ever, I have seen an increase in rubbish due to the amount of takeaway foods available.”

“Our beaches are very clean compared with others around the world. I have been to the beaches in the United States and our beaches are a lot cleaner than theirs.”

“I love our beaches and I haven’t seen much litter on them, they are pretty good.”

again rather than try and remedi-ate this one. “Whatever happens, we want to get on with it because we would like our learning centre back. The builders have also told me it’s costing $20,000 a month to keep the scaffold and shrink wrap around the building so that’s money that’s being wasted.”John says he is not surprised the learning centre leaked because it had a “modernistic design with a flat-roof and no eaves”. When he arrived at Henley he noticed water

marks on the ceiling and asked the board to fund a preliminary inspec-tion of the building. It is the second leaky building at Henley after the water-damaged ad-ministration block was remediated earlier this year. John also warned that Henley wasn’t the only school in Nelson with leaky building problems. “We are the first Nelson school to go through this process but we won’t be the last.”The Ministry of Education had ear-lier stated that there were 13 blocks in four schools around Nelson in the leaky building programme.

The King of the Forest should be renamed King and Queen of the Forest after Sarah Heath helped her Outsiders team win the annual logger sports race at Higgins Park near Wakefield on Saturday.Sarah was roped into a team at the last minute, joining her uncle Nigel Kelly, Brian Heslop and Daniel Jenkins for the re-lay race that featured wire rope splicing, followed by chainsaw assembly, delimbing and log splitting. And it was her super-fast wire rope splicing that gave the Outsiders a flying start in the final against the Brightwater Rural Fire Force which they won by 18 seconds in four minutes 16 seconds.Although Sarah doesn’t work in the forestry in-dustry, she says she learned the ropes from her grandfather, vet-eran logger Rex Kelly. She also had plenty of advice from Ni-gel, who owns Kelly Logging, and her father, Stu Heath, who won the event two years ago with his Fulton Hogan team.

“I had two or three days with Rex learning how to splice so that helped,” Sarah says. “I

made a mistake in the practise round so I was pretty deter-mined to get it right after that.“It was an awe-some day and I really enjoyed competing with Rex. We will look at getting a fam-ily team together next year.”Although Rex, Sarah and Ni-

gel had a good day at the of-fice, things didn’t turn out so well for the rest of the family. Stu’s Fulton Hogan team was eliminated in the heats while

Sarah’s brother, Jayme, was in the Brightwater Rural Fire Force team that lost the final - to make matters worse Stu was also beaten by his wife, Shar-lene, in a speed saw contest. The Outsiders each won a $600 voucher from Stihl New Zealand for winning the King of the Forest while Brightwater Rural Fire Force team mem-bers, Jayme, Nathan Palmer, Ryan Cole and Travis Fisher, each won $150 vouchers from Stihl Shop Richmond. It proved to be a profitable day for Nigel who received a $1000 voucher from Bowater Toyota for winning the wire rope splicing competition ahead of Blenheim’s Tony Cunningham. The Logging Weekend also in-cluded sawmill and log hauling demonstrations.

Small lifestyle block owners on the Waimea Plains are likely to pay less towards the proposed Waimea Community Dam af-ter public consultation high-lighted “equity and fairness” is-sues of the funding options for the $74.6 million project. The dam is designed to store water for irrigation and ur-ban and industrial users and last month the Tasman Dis-trict Council released figures showing how much it would cost ratepayers and irrigators. However, chief executive Lind-say McKenzie told the Waimea Weekly last Thursday that council is likely to review the funding models because many small lifestyle block holders don’t want or need extra water for irrigation. “We have had some people present their personal circum-stance and, on the face of it, the options don’t treat them fairly,” Lindsay says. “The relatively small life style blocks, without crops or resource consents, are being treated the same on a per hectare basis as a produc-tion horticultural operation so we are going to have to turn our minds to the equity and

fairness of the models for that group.”Tasman mayor, Richard Kempthorne, agrees the pub-lic meetings on the dam are highlighting a number of valid concerns about the funding options and council will listen to those concerns. “I have been quite encouraged by the constructive discussions we have had with people at the meetings and they are raising issues that the council needs to consider as we move forward. When we go out with the ini-tial proposal it’s bound to need some changes and that will be the real value of the consul-tation process - finding the things that we need to address to put into the long term plan.”A report by the Nelson Re-gional Economic Develop-ment Agency reaches the same conclusion saying the “main obstacle to the project going ahead is not in its economic worth but in the economic vi-ability for those who stand to gain from the dam”. The report

says the proposal to charge a flat rate per hectare irrigated is “administratively simple but produces high costs relative to the margins of some current land uses”. Although public consultation is showing that there is a lot of concern about the cost of the project and how it will be funded, Richard says the ma-jority of people recognise that it is important for the district. He says “there is a realisation of the acceptance of the need to put in a dam” and that the big issue facing the community is the dam’s affordability.Richard conceded that some form of government funding would “certainly be really, re-ally important” for the project’s viability. The council will be approaching government with a “package” before Christmas and he hopes that they can se-cure either a grant or low inter-est loan to reduce the cost. The last two public meet-ings about the dam will be held in the Murchison Rec-reation Centre next Monday from 5.30pm and in the Rich-mond council chambers next Wednesday from 1pm to 4pm.

AWARENESS WEEK: Parkinson’s Awareness Week is held November 1-7 every year. The an-nual Parkinson’s Awareness Walk will be held at the Tahunanui sports ground on Sunday, November 9, from 1pm to 3pm. There will be entertainment and a coffee stall on the day and the family-friendly one kilometre course costs $5 for individuals and $10 for families with all proceeds going towards Parkinsons and Mul-tiple Sclerosis Nelson.

HOSPITAL INCIDENTS: Nelson Marlbor-ough District Health Board hospitals report-ed eight serious adverse events during the 2013/14 year; this compares to nine recorded the previous year. A serious adverse event has, or has the potential, to result in serious lasting disability or death. These incidents occurred in the 2013/14 year when NMDHB had 29,231 admissions, 47,802 Emergency Department visits, and 149,342 outpatient appointments.

NEWSin brief

Giving sugary drinks to children should be classed as neglect, says the head of the region’s district health board.Chris Fleming, the chief executive of the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, made the comments in an email to leaders of government departments and other organisations to encourage them to introduce a ban on sugary drinks.Nelson City Council and the DHB have already introduced a policy banning the sale of sugary drinks at events they run and premises they manage, and Chris says

he’d like to see other organisations adopt a similar policy.“The damage that sugar-sweetened bever-ages is doing to our children, from both an oral health and an obesity perspective, is simply unacceptable,” wrote Chris. “Per-sonally, I think that providing our children with access to these products should be seen as neglect.”The email was sent to those in various or-ganisations, including Sport Tasman, Tas-man District Council, Police, Department of Conservation, Primary Health Organi-

sation, Ministry of Education, Department of Internal Affairs, Work and Income, NMIT, IRD and several others. He says that he’d like to see local schools also adopt the policy and stood by his statements when questioned by Waimea Weekly.“Neglect is a harsh word, but if you under-

stand the implications it’s having on the oral health standards and the obesity issue, I think we need to be aware of what we’re subconsciously giving our children,” he says. “When you see the photos of young kids and their teeth, it’s just appalling and completely unnecessary.”Chris says he’d like to see all schools ban sugary drinks on their premises and for the top of the south to take the lead on the issue.TDC has ruled out a ban at this stage but has said it will look at it again.

Shop ‘n Win – the competition that gives $5000 to one lucky shop-per – is now open.Waimea Weekly advertising man-ager, Sue Davies, says there has al-ready been a great response from the public. “Last year there were over 70,000 entries, and judging by the enthusiasm with which it’s been received, we wouldn’t be sur-prised if it exceeds that this year,” she says.Shop ‘n Win is run by Waimea Weekly, Richmond Mall and the participating businesses, and gives one lucky shopper a chance to win $5000 for Christmas, a wel-

come addition to the festive season funds. All shoppers need to do is purchase something from one of the participating stores and fill out an entry form. The business also has a chance to win with $1500 up for grabs, and the icing on the cake, $2500 worth of Richmond Mall vouchers, is set to be given away half-way through the five week promotion. Selected stores in Richmond and the Richmond Mall are taking part, a full list of the re-tailers can be found in this issue. Shop ‘n Win will be running until November 30, so there is plenty of opportunity to go into the draw.

Hundreds of people showed how much they value our beautiful beaches by joining in the annual Big Beach Clean-up on Saturday, picking up 3.93 tonnes of rubbish. The biggest community con-servation project in the region is organised by the Department of Conservation, in partner-ship with Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and Nelmac. It includes the clean-up of approximately 50 beach-es within the region. Over 350 volunteers collected 3.93 tonnes of rubbish from an astounding 293 kilometres of coastline between Cable Bay and Marahau. This year’s fig-ures were up slightly from last year, however an overall de-

crease since 2010, when 10.489 tonnes was collected.Rubbish cleared included tyres, rusty drums, netting, polysty-rene, old clothing, barbed wire and lots of plastic and glass. Less common items included a boat seat and a couple of couches. Local individuals, businesses, sports clubs and community groups were encouraged to get involved in the event with each group responsible for organis-ing their team’s rubbish collec-tion. The clean-up allows the community to come together and many groups involved en-

joy the social aspect of the day.The Waimea Tramping Club has been involved in the event since 2010 and member Guilda Pegg says “the amount of rub-bish we are collecting is about a quarter of what we collected in 2010”. She says this is “due to more awareness plus holding this annual event helps keep the volume down”. Rubbish-free beaches enhance the lifestyle of people and help protect our wildlife. Rope, packing strap, fishing line and netting can tangle seabirds and sea life, making it difficult for them to feed. Plastic bags and wrapping can be ingested by birds and whales mistaking them for food, and can cause them slow and painful deaths.

A new stock effluent disposal facility is be-ing constructed at Three Brothers Corner near Richmond in a joint initiative be-tween Nelson City Council and New Zea-land Transport Agency.Stock effluent disposal facilities are re-quired around the country because of the hazards posed by effluent spilling onto roads from stock trucks. NZTA’s Mark Owen says there weren’t any suitable sites around Nelson so they approached the Tasman District Council about locating the facility on the former scrap metal site near Richmond.Mark says a number of sites in Nelson were considered but then discounted due either to their location, the need to acquire land or the cost of disposing of effluent. He says the preferred site at Three Brothers

corner is already owned by NZTA and it is on the route from Golden Bay to Marl-borough which is extensively used by stock trucks. The TDC operates a stock effluent dispos-

al facility just outside Murchison which ca-ters for stock movements from the south. The effluent will be trucked regularly from the transfer station to the Fittal Street dis-posal station.

Nelson city councillor Eric Davy says they “appreciate the cooperation from Tasman District Council in establishing a Nelson City Council facility in their area”.Mark says the region’s roads need to be kept clean because hitting spilled efflu-ent on the road “can be like hitting an oil slick—especially for cyclists and people on motorbikes”.He says creating a new stock effluent dis-posal facility allows effluent to be disposed of safely, hygienically and conveniently. “They don’t sound terribly exciting, but are a necessity in terms of reducing pollution, improving safety and supporting econom-ic productivity.”The facility, which is being built by Fulton Hogan and expected to cost $500,000, is due to be completed around February.

Students from St Paul’s School have been working hard on beau-tifying their commu-nal space by building an earth bench using recycled rubbish and mud.All students from the school were involved in the project, saving their plastic beverage bottles and rubbish from home, which was then brought into school and stuffed into the bottles over several sessions. “It took quite a long time to collect, sort and then stuff the bot-tles but we ended up with between 250 and 300 bottles, which we estimate equates to about 100 kilograms of plastic rubbish oth-erwise going to a land-fill,” says deputy prin-cipal Philippa Hood.A design for the earth bench was created by

a group of year seven and eight students and the actual building

took place with the aid of an experienced craftsperson.

Richmond Kindergarten teacher, Rochelle Steer, and some the kindy’s chilldren, from front to rear, Belle Pearce, Eden Broken-shire, Paige Selfe, Ethan Thompson, Jack Lovell and Tayla Bryhn, stand beside the garden from where the plants were stolen.

The children at Richmond Kindergarten are not impressed with the people who stole three of their pot plants from outside the kindy last week.Teacher, Rochelle Steer, noticed that the three large pot plants were missing when she ar-rived at the Florence Street Kindy on Tuesday. She says the large brown pots, that contained yucca plants about 800 millimetres high, had been outside the kindy for about six years and the children were disappointed they had been stolen. “When we told the children they were very concerned,” Rochelle says. “One of them said to me ‘it’s not nice to take other people’s things’ and he asked why they would do that.“It’s a shame because the kindy’s parents go to a lot of effort to hold fundraisers to buy things like the plants to help create a nice environ-ment for the children.”Rochelle says they have reported the theft to the police who asked the kindy to let them know if any staff or parents saw the pot plants.

Kindy has plants stolen Known for their health benefits, natural-

ly fermented foods are making a come-back as more people are turning away from a diet of high sugar and highly re-fined foods.Long before probiotics became popular, naturally fermented foods were an es-sential part of the diet in many cultures throughout history. Nelson based chef and nutrition consultant, Nicola Gallo-way, is an advocate and believes there is a food trend towards people going back to using old cooking techniques for their well-being. Lactic acid fermentation is a traditional method of fermenting veg-

etables for long storage with the assistance of lactic acid. It is among the most common methods of fermenting and one of the easiest to do at home. More well-known fermented foods are Kimchi, a traditional fermented Korean delicacy made from vegetables and cabbage dish Sauerkraut. “The word ferment can put people off but these foods taste good, pro-biotic pills are one way to improve your health but being a foodie, I like get-

ting the benefits through food. The pro-cess is easier than you think, it takes time for the foods to ferment but not much time to cook and prepare,” Nicola says.Fermented foods are known to aid the digestibility of vegetables, such as cab-bage, and increase vitamin levels. The process also produces enzymes which encourage the growth of beneficial bac-teria in the gut. Nicola is currently running natural fer-mentation workshops and is looking to hold future workshops in Nelson early next year. For further information visit www.homegrown-kitchen.co.nz

Speed zones around schools:I hear the city council is talking about a single lane going past

Auckland Point School, but I am puz-zled why the school does not have speed signs there during the times children ar-rive and depart. We seem to have these signs in most of Nelson but not on this busy part of Nelson’s highway. Maybe our councillors can tell Nelson people why this school, on one of the Nelson busiest roads has missed out? G Barker.

Should fireworks be banned?Yes, or at least restricted. Was on phone to police/fire last night

with some inconsiderate people letting off between 11pm and midnight in very blustery conditions! We’re restricted to two weeks for buying, so why is it that there are no restrictions on when we can let off. Should need a permit if having for a birthday or special occasion and none let off after 11pm, especially in built-up areas. Jacinda Stevenson.

Yes, unfortunately, as a small mi-nority have ruined it for the re-

sponsible people. Around our area fire-works go off all hours of the night, 12 months of the year. John Sauer.

No, I think public should be allowed to use them but they

should only be for sale for one day or two, and more restrictions, so they only get used on the one day. If they get banned it would be great to have some nice firework displays on the day. Eva Stryder.

It’s a hard one as there is always the minority who can’t follow the

rules. As an owner of dogs, I’d like to see them banned from personal use. As a mother, I think if you really want your kids to experience fireworks take them to an arranged event. They are usually much more dramatic, and hopefully, much safer. Holland-Potts Property.

Yes we have someone in the Wood who lets them off all year

and always at around 2 a.m, waking eve-rybody who is a light sleeper. Brenda Kenny.

Definite YES! We lost our beau-tiful cat two years ago on Guy

Fawkes night. Wendy Thomas.

I think designated areas, nights and times should be manda-

tory for public use of fireworks with, perhaps, a fireman or other appointed safety person to supervise. Anything or anytime other than that should be ille-gal. There are so many stupid idiots who have no idea how to use them safely and even less idea on how to model to their children to be safe around fireworks. Sharon Tarapipi Pi.

Yes yes yes!!! Have organised dis-plays. Then, hopefully, less acci-

dents. And kinder to animals!! Laschelle Walker.

Yes, organised public events, one on Guy Fawkes night out at sea.

Donna Jan.

Sadly, there are too many idiots ruining it for everyone else and

I think the time has come for organised public displays only. Heard some being let off last night in the strong wind and all I could think was “brain-dead idiots” Tania Preston Brunell.

Nothing in this world is worse than having fun these days! Just

remember being a kid and the excite-ment of them. Yes, they are loud and yes they can be a bit annoying but yes it’s only for a few days a year. Can’t begin to imagine what being a kid will be like in 50 years, swimming pool will have no doubt been long since banned. Glen Baumfield.

Could never understand why we celebrate an act of terrorism and

treason. Julie Roberts.

No, there just needs to be more restrictions!

Jasmine Nicholson-Mooney.

Don’t let them off in residen-tial areas. Dogs freak out how

would you feel if your precious rug rat was scared to death. Why do it to peo-ple’s precious animals. Public displays only. Kids were letting them off on the church steps at lunch time today. Geor-gie McLean.

The past few months have been a whirlwind for Dylan Filbee, his wife Terry Rosser, and their two daughters. Moving to Brightwater from Christchurch, the family love being a part of the Brightwater community. Dylan has recently purchased Reco Wrought Iron from founder Rex Lankshear who must feel pretty comfortable in knowing he has passed the reins to someone as passionate as he is.Dylan has been working in the design industry as a mechanical engineer, both in New Zea-land and internationally, since leaving school. While on his OE he spent a lot of time in the UK where he worked on many diverse projects, ranging from a theme park in England to the fancy estates in Ascot. While much will remain the same at Reco, Dylan is excited to be able to bring his design skills to the busi-ness, allowing him to see projects right through from concept to design and then the finished product. A free measure and quote is offered to all clients, and with new CAD technology, cus-tomers will be able to view 3D images of their

project, allowing for any modifications and al-terations to be made before construction starts.Reco pride themselves on customer satisfac-tion and a team of qualified engineers ensure you get only top quality results. Recently driving along a main road in Nel-son, I heard a speaker on the radio men-tion blind spots and how we have blind spots in our cars and often can have blind spots in our lives. Not far down the road I could see a bus starting to pull out of a side street into my path, so I slowed, unsure if the bus driver was going to pull right out and across the coming traffic or if he was thinking oth-ers drivers like me would stop to let him through, even though he was coming

through a give way intersection. As I was getting closer I noticed the driver straining to look for cars coming the other way. Now having to stop completely, as the bus was on my side of the road and cutting across in front of our lane, causing both me and the car behind to have to move out of the way.Did this bus driver have a blind spot or was he just not looking the correct way. A little shaken I drove on considering

blind spots and very much there are other drivers with blind spots. Giving consideration to blind spots in our cars, and at some in-tersections, I started to consider the blind spots that we can have in our lives. How many times have we made mistakes because we don’t know the whole story, how many times to we do something the hard way because we don’t know there is an easier way. Have we ever come across a great picnic or camping spot thinking it is great only to pass a better one when we move on. Re-

cently a small booklet appeared in our mail boxes, called The invitation “Hope for

all”, did we choose to read it? Did we put it with other flyers straight in the rubbish? Or did we find that there is hope for all?If you missed the story of hope for all, visit your local church as many helped sponsor this little book and find out there is hope through the love of Jesus and that there is peo-ple who care.Like that famous old Hymn amaz-ing Grace that says, “I once was blind but now I see”. Don’t live

your life with blind spots.

Steve Rollo, Minister

Richmond Church of

Christ.

Two Richmond School students are off to the South Island Jump Jam X Fac-tor competition, which will be held in Christchurch this Friday. The Jump Jam X Factor competition is a pairs or triples event for student leaders who will instruct an audience, using an original Jump Jam routine. Jessie Brown and Paris Hart from Richmond School, have been practicing for the competi-tion since term one. They entered in the competitive inter-schools event by sub-mitting a routine on You Tube and they were then selected to compete, along with four other South Island groups. Richmond School Jump Jam coordina-tor, Sherie Schwass says the girls have been training during their school holi-days and lunchtimes. The girls are to perform their routine in front of a panel of judges and school children at Lincoln Primary. Points are awarded for motivation, visual and ver-bal skills and technique with the region-al championship title up for grabs.

Marchfest is Nel-son and New Zealand's unique craft beer festival - a celebra-tion of music, food, fun and of course, proper beer. The 8th MarchFest will take place at Founders Park on Saturday March 21st, 2015, with an amazing lineup of brand new lo-cal beers and live music from Sola Rosa, Brockaflowersau-rus Rex, Jordie Lane, California Dreamers, The Saints and The Radtones.Every year around 15 regional craft breweries sign up to produce a brand new beer especially for the event. The Nelson region is New Zealand’s sole hop-growing area – and has more craft breweries per head of the population than anywhere else in the country. Top of the South brewer-ies include Dale's, Dead Good, Founders, Golden Bear, Hop

Federation, Lighthouse, McCashins, Moa, Mussel Inn, Re-naissance, Sprig and Fern, Totara, Townshends, West Coast, 8Wired and more. Unlike other beer festivals, MarchFest is not just about beer. It’s also about local wines, ciders, regional cuisine (including a beer and food matching lunch), amazing music acts and a family-friendly day out. A winning combi-nation that attracts thousands of people each year! Tickets on sale from 1 Dec at www.marchfest.com (U18s free entry with a parent/guardian)

Located in Riwaka, in the idyllic Top Of The South, Hop Federation is surrounded by hop growers and orchards, and also just a stone’s throw from our beaches, national parks and

lots of great recreational destinations that the re-gion is famous for. Hop federation is still in its infancy, having only been established in 2013, but they are seriously dedicated to the art and craft of brewing, and this has paid dividends with their recent Bronze Medal in the US Ales category at the 2014 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards, for their Golden. The friendly staff would love to help you appreciate the subtleties and complexities of their craft beers by offer-ing free tastings of everything in their range, and they enjoy chatting with you about them and hearing your feedback. Feel free to pop in or give them a call 03-5280486, they are open 7 days a week, 11am to 6pm.

Founders Heritage Parks’ newest attrac-tion is the Hop & Beer Museum that tells a tale of regional significance, featuring brewers and hop growers dating as far

back as the 1840s.The museum is set out in three rooms: The Hop Kiln: The raised Hop Kiln-shaped roof creates a landmark for the park. Visitors feel as though they are en-tering an actual kiln as they step inside and gaze up at the impressive dome of the fully sarked raised ceiling. This room shows how the hops are dried ready for processing and Nel-son hop-picking stories are told.

The Brew House: As visitors walk into this room, objects from the park’s collection dem-onstrate early brewing pro-cesses, including original vats, bottle labellers and cooling systems. The Office: This room tells of the history of Nelson’s local brewing companies. The sto-ries include the roots of our region’s brewing families, the

related soda siphon industry, and the impact of Nelson hops on national and international markets.Free for locals, including Tasman residents. Opens from No-vember 26th, 2014.

Freeing your body from aches, pains and injuries can be life-changing, and with the Bowen Technique it can also be pain-free.Richmond-based Carolyn Morgan is originally from the UK but now prac-tices from Hardy’s in the Richmond Mall. She has been practicing the Bow-en Technique for more than a decade and has worked all over the world, alongside specialists of many different healing methods. The technique takes the pull off the skeletal system and relaxes the muscles, which allows the body to reset and heal itself. Carolyn is extremely popular with a range of people needing treatment for neck pain, frozen shoulders, sciatic back and she also sees plenty of athletes. But an area that people may not be aware of is her work with children. Because Bowen is non-evasive and extremely gentle, children are perfect candidates for the treatment. Carolyn also sees children who are suffering from attention deficit disorder, digestion prob-lems, colic and reflux, bed wetting and many other issues. “If there’s been a traumatic birth, people bring their babies along to me just to re-balance them. Because Bowen is so gentle, it’s great for kids,” says Carolyn. To find out more visit www.thebowenclinic.co.nz or call 544 9762.

Trained in the traditional methods, Lisa is now offer-ing classes in modern upholstery through Waimea College and privately, and it may well be your new fa-vourite hobby. • Clean gutters to reduce the risk of em-bers catching hold and starting a fire in the roof.

• Keep a 1-1.5 m strip around the outside of your house free of flammable material- use rock not bark

• Plant low flammability plant species within the 10-20m zone around your house.

• Within 20m of the house, remove flam-mable material from underneath trees and shrubs and remove branches up to 2-3m to reduce the risk of a fire “ladder-ing” up into the tree tops.

• Ensure embers can’t be blown under your house. Don’t store wood and flam-mable material under the house.

• Keep firewood piles away from the house.

• Wooden fences, if on fire, will carry flames along their length creating a ‘fuse’. Put a break between the fence and the house.

• Look around the house for places where hot embers can land on flammable mate-rial and catch.

Our rural fire brigades are a com-munity asset that should never be taken for granted. The work they do is vital to the protection of our friends, family and colleagues, and Brightwater Rural Volunteer Fire Force is no exception. Re-cords show the Brightwater force has been operating since the late 60s and, with some of the 18 cur-rent members having served for 20 years, it’s clear there is a lot of loyalty amongst the brigade. It’s a trait particularly strong in the ru-ral force and although they enjoy a steadfast team, new members are always greatly appreciated to bulk up the numbers in the event of an emergency. Their open day, on Saturday No-vember 8, is the perfect opportu-nity to learn a little bit about the Brightwater rural force and maybe encourage some new members out of the woodwork. Meet the brigade, see what they do, where they’re based and why they choose to do the job. It’s not as daunting as you might think to make that first step towards joining the force, says Ru-

ral Fire Officer Steve Foote. There will be plenty of demonstrations happening throughout the day from 10am until 2pm, including monsoon buckets in action, their two trucks and support ute, a large tanker, fire smart presentation, giveaways for the kids, and people will be able to try on the gear, go through the trucks and get an idea about what it is like to be in the vol-unteer fire force. As for why the members choose to actively be involved in the fire force, there’s not one straight an-swer, says Steve. “I think it’s more to serve your community and to provide an organisation or a ser-vice that is there to offer help when it is needed for the community and the surrounding areas.” When they aren’t rescuing cats stuck up trees, they use their skills to help out in a number of different emergency situations, including vegetation fires, co-responses to medical situations with St John, car crashes, structural fires and assist Civil Defence with natural disas-ters, such as flooding. Brightwater Rural Fire Force responded to a to-tal of 99 call outs, while this year to date has seen them attend 57. Steve says there have been less structural fires but there is no particular situa-tion that requires their at-tention most. It is an even mix of everything from for-est fires, medicals and false alarms. Being a rural force, they also assist other parts of the region, whether it’s an emergency close to home or further afield. They have been required as far out as Hira, Marlborough and Motueka, with some of the team even travelling to Australia to lend a hand. Behind a great force is a sup-portive community, and Steve says the people of Brightwa-ter, especially local business-es, have always been outstanding when there has been a need for new gear, and continue to be an immense help. Their training during winter takes place on two Wednesdays every month, and three Wednesdays every month in summer, and includes a mixture of everything they need to learn to maintain their diverse skill set. This means pump training, radio procedure, basic health and safety when they’re on the ground with a fire, crash scene scenarios, and a lot of work alongside neighbouring volun-teer forces from Appleby and Wakefield. Addi-tional sessions take place for specialised training such as first aid refreshers and newcomers joining the team. Everyone in the rural fire force is on an NZQA accreditation scheme and there are spe-cific courses that members have to do to remain at a certain level. Being part of the Brightwater Rural Volunteer Fire Force can be extremely rewarding, but it also carries some hardships that members and their families must deal with. “I think the hardest part about the job is leaving your family, anytime of the day, whether it is Christmas day or birthdays. It’s not just you that volunteers, your family is in-volved as well, they are affected by it as much as you, and sometimes when you have to deal with

a not-so-pleasant outcome it can be hard, espe-cially on the younger guys but even the older guys can be effected,” says Steve. Overall, the rural fire force is a great organisation with its own family

atmosphere. “We always look out for each other and take care of each other. You have a lot of fun, it’s serious but it’s a lot of fun. We all believe that if we can help save someone’s property or make a differ-ence in their lives, we’re do-ing our job well.”Brightwater Rural Fire Force also runs a successful ca-det programme for children aged between 13 and 17 who may be interested in a further career with the fire force. The basic training is at a lower level to what the brigade per-forms, but by the time they

choose to join the rural force at 18, they will have already completed half their initial training. Property insightsNew Tasman District Rateable Values Tasman District rateable values will be available at the end of the year and we are all keen to know what our new rateable value will be. Unfortunately there is absolutely no way that we can find out prior to the release date. My guess is that there will be no consistency in the new RVs and they will fluctuate depending on the type of property that you have and the price range.

What can you do if you are not happy with the rateable value?

Read the document carefully and note the time frame that you have within which to lodge any objections. If you want a review then be sure that you request this. It may be that someone will come and view your property and make a judgement based on how your property sits with other property in the same area and with the same features. The values of rural and lifestyle property vary considerably and this is a good time to take a close at what your property has to offer.

I often hear people say that they don’t want to object to their rateable value as it will push up their rates. It would be worth asking how much your rates will rise and it may be worth paying that little bit extra in the long run.

The New Zealand men’s hockey team is coming to Nelson to play two test matches against Canada in early December. The games were confirmed by Hockey New Zealand yesterday afternoon and will see the Blacksticks play on December 9 and 10 at Saxton Field, before heading to Christchurch for the third and fourth tests in the four match series.

It is the first time a full international hock-ey test will be played at Saxton Field and the first time the men’s side have played in Nelson since 1952.That game was played at Trafalgar Park against India and featured Nelson player Fred (Ted) Gribble. The Blacksticks women’s side played at Saxton Field in 2009 but it was against

an Indian Invitational side and was not classed as a test match.John Whiting from Hockey New Zealand says it’s nice to be able to give test match-

es to the regions and, in this case, they’ve been able to do it because of support from Nelson City Council. “Definitely over the past few years the smaller communities are the ones that really get behind it and we’re hoping that will be the case in Nelson with some big crowds.”The two tests will start at 6pm and ticket prices will be released later this week.

When mother and daughter duo, Jessie Sut-ton and Kirsty Glasgow, ventured into business ownership some of their friends were surprised when they heard they had purchased a gym. By their own admission, neither Jessie nor Kirsty could be defined as ‘gym bunnies’. However, they share a passion for the Curves 30 minute fitness circuit and a personal understanding of the challenges of weight loss. This makes them fit perfectly with the Curves philosophy of en-couraging local women and providing them with the tools necessary to empower them to live more fulfilling lives, regard-less of age or fitness level. Many women who join Curves have not exercised before and this is where Jessie and Kirsty’s kindness and empathy comes to the fore, as they help women take this first step to improve their well-being.With clubs in over 70 countries, Curves is fa-mous for its 30-minute fitness circuit, which is designed to work every major muscle group, combining strength training, cardio and stretch-ing. A Curves Coach encourages and supports members to achieve great results. Curves Complete is the weight management solution that includes a fitness programme, a personalised meal plan and one-on-one coach-ing and support. Backed by extensive research, Curves Complete has been shown to reduce fat,

increase lean muscle and boost metabolism to help lose and maintain weight loss.Jessie and Kirsty are delighted to offer new mem-bers the opportunity to join now and workout free for the rest of the year. With no monthly fees due until January, there’s really no excuse to wait

until the New Year! Whether your aim is to lose weight, in-crease fitness and strength, or simply maintain a healthy life-style, the Curves Stoke Rich-mond team offers solutions to suit each individual.Last month Curves Stoke Rich-mond became the first NZ club to install the next generation,

state-of-the art Curves equipment. The equip-ment has been redesigned, with improved form and resistance to maximise results. Three new pieces have been added to the circuit, two focus on toning the arms; perfect timing for summer! The third, a stretch frame, is used at the end of a workout to increase flexibility, enhancing the effectiveness of the Curves circuit.Body Basic Circuits are an additional programme provided at no extra cost and are integrated into the 30 minute circuit, focusing on strengthening arms, legs and core muscles. If you have ever felt intimidated about starting a fitness programme, or want to lose weight, pop in and meet the friendly team at Curves.

Nelson under-19 rider, Reuben Connor, gets some air time during the first day of the Top of the South Downhill double-header held on the Broken Axe course, near Nelson on Saturday. But it was Kieran Bennett who showed he still knows the fastest way down Nelson’s downhill tracks, Broken Axe and Kaka, when he dominated the Nelson Mountainbike Club’s Top of the South downhill double-header at the weekend. Kieran smoked down Broken Axe on Saturday in two minutes 57 seconds, before clocking 3mins flat on Kaka on Sunday for a combined time of 5min 57sec. That was 13 seconds faster than second-placed Nathan Hewetson. Nelson’s Raewyn Morrison was the fastest woman recording 4min 2sec on Broken Axe and 4min 9sec on Kaka. Nelson’s top road cyclist, George Bennett, is back home for his annual summer break after a season that pro-duced a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows both on and off the road. The season started full of promise after George signed with one of the top teams on the professional tour, Can-nondale, at a time when many teams were cutting budgets and riders. George was also looking ahead to Commonwealth Games se-lection and the distinct pos-sibility of racing in his first Tour de France after making his grand tour debut in the Giro Italia last year. But things didn’t go to plan with crashes, illness and contractual issues making 2014 his “toughest season” in six years of professional cycling. “I didn’t get the big break-through I had dreamed about in January,” George says. “I made some big gains but the things that could have gone either way never fell in my direction.“The Vuelta (Espana) was a perfect example. I couldn’t believe I was in the top 10 after four stages and then it all came undone with three miserable days.“I got caught in the cross-wind one day, tried to make up for it with some loose tactics the next and then crashed the following day and lost 15 minutes. My gen-

eral classification ambitions dissolved very quickly - that race summed up my whole season really.”George says pulling out of the Commonwealth Games due to illness and missing out on a place in next year’s Cannondale team after it merged with Garmin-Sharp were also low points of the season. However, the season did in-clude some highlights and George says the team time trial in the Vuelta, when Cannondale finished sec-ond, was at the top of the list. He also enjoyed a good start to the season, impressing in the Tour of California where he was placed in the top 10 before crashing in the final stage. “The time trial in the Vuelta was hard but some-how I rolled with the boys and we nearly got a stage win out of it. We were pipped by the last team to finish - it was heartbreak stuff.“I was racing well in Califor-nia too. We attacked on the sixth stage to set up a win for Peter Sagan and I was climbing alongside the top four or five guys in the world like Bradley Wiggins on the mountain stages.“I was right up there until I crashed and knocked myself out. Then I got another bike but I was still dazed so I flew

down a really steep section for another 100 metres and hit a barrier doing about 60 kilometres an hour.”Securing a new contract with Dutch team, LottoNL, also ensured the season had a happy ending. George says Lotto is “one of the most progressive teams in world cycling and has some su-per-strong GC riders there

for me to ride for and learn from.”George’s first race for his new team will be the Tour Down Under in Australia from January 17 to 25. He also plans to line up in the Tour de Vineyards around the Tasman district start-ing on December 30 and the national championships in Christchurch on January 9.
