To detect defects in oil-cooled conservator-equippedtransformers.

    3. CHARACTERISTICS

    3.1. MECHANICAL

-According to Din 42566-For outdoor installation. (IP 44)- Light metal-alloy casing.- Built-in mechanism mainly made of steel.- 1 of 2 (synthetic) floats and a chock valve.- Different type according to the transformers' ratedpower:25$5000kVa

    50;:::5000 kVa $10000 kVa80 ;:::1 0000 kVa-Ventilation in terminal box-Sighting glasses for checking of the built-in system.-With oildrain valve in the bottom-Vibration-proof: 10 g (10 m/s)

    3.2. ELECTRICAL

-Test voltage: 2 kV/1 min.- 1 or 2 contacts (signalization and/or switch off)- Earth connection inside and outside of the ter-

minal box.-2 coupling nuts Pg 16. 4. OPERATION- Normal condition : Buchholz completely filled with0il.- Small gas development: upper float moves thesignal contact.- Heavy gas development: causes oil displacement;shock valve moves the trip contact.- Oil level drops: upper float first operates the signal contact; in case the oil level drops still further, the lower float will then operate the trip

    contact.

    10. TESTING

-By means of a test button: push in button; thealarm contact and the trip contact are moved.- By means of a pump: pump air into Buchholz viathe air release plug till the alarm contact works.- Check contacts: remove the locking plug from thetest button if they are in a position other thanprovided.

    11 . MAINTENANCE

At least once a year :- Check the contacts- Check the connections, tighten them ifneed be.-Also tighten the compression glands.

    12. MAKING USE OF THE BUCHHOLZ RELAY

Switch the transformer off and take a gas.- Gas incombustible, acetylene test negative :gasses are air rests, transformer can be switchedon again. Air invades the transformer: look for thedefect.- Gas combustible, acetylene test positive : trans-former shows signs of an electrical defect whichshould be tracked down immediately.- No gas escapes, air is sucked in by open screw, oil level drops: oil level too low, add oil, fix anyleakages.

    2.PURPOSE

To measure the winding temperature by means ofindirect measurement.

    3. CHARACTERISTICS

    3.1. MECHANICAL

-For outdoor installation, IP 55, tropical design.- Thermometer casing : sheetsteel, galvanised.

    - Painting RAL 7033.-Capillary line, length 6 m, with PVC mantle.- Cableglands : 4 x PG 16- brass .- Compensated up to an ambient temperature of

    - 40Ctill +80C.- Max. humidity: 80 %.-Max. height: 2000 m.- Mounted with vibration damper.- Earthquake resistant till2 g.

3.2. ELECTRICAL-Test voltage: 2,5 kV/1 min.- Capillary electrically insulated.- Secondary current transformer 5 A- Screw for earth connection in the apparatus.

    4. OPERATIONMeasures the winding temperature by means ofsimulation. The volumetrical expansion of the capillary liquiddrives the measuring unit. The sensor is heated by the oil and a resistance fedby a current transformer (mounted under oil).Temperature difference between winding and oil issimulated by current adiustment bV means of theheating resistance.Independent of the external feeding.

To protect transformer oil against humidity.

    3. OPERATION

Underpressure develops when oil temperature inthe transformer drops.Moist outside air is sucked in via the oil lock andpasses through the drying medium. Air reachedthe transformer dry. Overpressure develops whenthe oil expands. This process forces the air fromthe conservator via the air dryer.

    4. FABRICATIONComposed of a cylindrical glass holder filled with adrying medium and locked up at the bottom bymeans of an oil lock.A sieve at the lower edge of theholder prevents contact between oil in the oil lockand drying medium. The drying medium:Is called "blue-gel". It is of glassy nature, almostchemically neutral and has got a great absorptivecapacity. It is a silicagel that, drenched in cobalt salt, has got an azure crystalline appearance in drycondition. In this condition it absorbs 40% of its ownweight in water. When humidity increases, the bluecolor changes to red. When the fill is completelyre-colored it should be renewed.

AVOID CONTACTBElWEEN OIL AND DRYINGMEDIUM,OTHERWISETHE BLUECOLORCHANGESTO BROWN ORBLACKWHEN DRY-ING THE MEDIUM.THIS MAKES CONTROLIM-POSSIBLE.

    05 Security and Control

    5.MOUNTING

The DIN air dryers and "MAIER" are mounted tothe tube lining by means of flanges. The HH type is mounted with a wire connection 01"G.

    6. RENEWING THE FILL

This must be accomplished quickly.Transport is done in dry and airtight packing.DIN 42562: Loosening nut (26) unlocks the oil

lock.EH 5/6/7: Loosen nuts (22) to free silicagel holder

(5).DIN 42567: Remove oil lock (4) by loosening

guard (5). Loosen nut (12) in order tofree holder (7).

The numbers refer to the drawings in the appendix.- The upper cover is constructed in such a way

that emptying (respectively filling) the holder isnow possible.

"MAIER":-Unscrew CAP on lower part (item 1) for empty

ing.- Unscrew CAP on upper part (item 2) for filling.

Important note:After filling with new and dry silicagel it is requiredthe check the oil level in the oil lock on the bottom ofthe air dryer also. Each type of silicagel dryer isprovided with marks, indicating the proper oil levelduring operation.

    7. REACTIVATING OR RETRIEVING OF "BLUE-GEL'

This occurs at temperatures between 12 C and200 C. Any pure gas can be used to heat the silicagel. Pure smoke gas from a gassy fuel or hot airunder a pressure of 100-200 WC also give satisfaction. It is also possible to heat the blue-gel in a meltingpot by means of one fuel or another. This processcan be accelerated by stirring the gel. Drying

comes to an end when blue-gel has regained itsoriginal blue color
