their own conf.irmation. In fact aprogram of parent education isalmost a demand in the administration of all the sacraments intoday's church. Let'-s face it, children are willing to be activemembers of the church only inso far as their parents are willing to give them example, guidance and direction.

The Church must never ceasein its efforts to renew and reovive the attitude and administra·tion of alI the sacraments, ifCatholics are to he real and hon·est followers of Christ. Individually, members of the Church, ontheir part, must also be sincereand forthright in their personalliving of faith. With this attitude, the confirmed Catholic certainlywill affect eternity.

From the United States, thecongregation branched out toCanada in 1937 and to Brazil in1950. .

The entire congregation, administered from Rome byMother Mary Virgi'nette Chicboksko, a U. S. citizen, numbersover 4,000 religious women inseven countries.

"According to its Constitution, the spirit of the congregation isone of seraphic love of God andneighbor, reconciliation in unionwith the Immaculate Heart ofMary, in the spirit of atonementand reparation -to God in theHoly Eucharist," explained oneof the religious.

"This spirit," she went on,"finds expression in the congregation's works of mercy, in thedaily exposition of the BlessedSacrament in all provincial centers, and in various other reparatory practices.

"The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Felix," she 'pointedout, "is really 120 years old. InAmerica, it is a century old.

"But the Felician Sisters cel·ebrate more than the individualhistory of an individual congregation. It is the principle of reli·gious life itself, a life lived atthe heart of the Church, a lifesustained by the vitality of thcLord Christ."

tion to at least sixteen if possible. In this particular area itwould be difficult, to go beyondthis ag~ level since we still havea large<percentage of high schooldrop outs at sixteen and beyond.

The instruction for this sacrament must be vital and meaningful, aimed not only at theyoung people themselves butalso their parents, many ofwhom have never been instructed in the truths of faith since

To be sure, the void createdby such lack of personal committment now has been challenged by the dynamic renewalof the sacrament of Confirmationon the part of the CouncilFathers of Vatican II and theofficial teachings of the Church. In an attempt to meet the ch'allenges of our particular society,Confirmation is now to be considered a beginning, an initiation into the total community.Considering the social and psychological "hang ups" of today'sworld, it is highly recommendedthat young people know in factwhat is expected of them whent~ey do receive Confirmation andnot just, be able to rattle offpious phrases and meaninglesswords.

As t,he Bishops of our diocese journey from parishto pari~h to admiJ;lister the sacrament of Confirmation tothousands of our young people, it is well that a few wordsbe written about the renewal of this sacramental sign inthe Church. Over the yearsmore Catholics than we liketo admit view Confirmationas an end and not a beginning. If a child was confirmedit meant for all practioal purposesthe end of all classroom religiousinstruction. This of course became tragically ridiculous as theage for the reception of Confirmation, ~as lowered and lowered even to such levels as fifthand sixth grade. In effect, whatthis did, despite all the urgingsof the teaching church, was toput an end to the religious education of a, large percentage ofthe CathoHc population. Many ofthe present problems of our Cath-

- olic adult population stem froma complete lack of knowledgeof the truths, of our faith. Thatattitude that Confirmation meantthe end of "catechism classes"certainly was one of the majorcontr~butots 'to the situation

Leg Work To Be DoneThis is a critical time in the progress of this year's

Catholic Charities Appeal.

Th~ initial response has been heard from. The firstdonations have been collected and tabulated. The results areheartening. The spint of charity is most evident in the generosity of those who have responded to the need of theirneighbors. Catholics and those of other faiths have beentouched by the worth of the Appeal, the asking in the nameof the poor and the deprived and the sick and the aged andthe exceptional and the troubled.

The firs.t returns have shown that.

But the more difficult. work is ahead in these next fewdays.

Return calls must be made. And this is alwayS a wearisome and wearying work. Those who may have been overlooked in the first contacts must now be given the opportunity to reach out to a neighbor in need.

This means that someone must care enough to make thecontact, to point out the great needs that exist, to ask in ,the'true spirit of charity and expect 'a donation to be made inthat same spirit. . ,

It is now a matter of leg work which must be motivatedby the desire to aid those in need and to give:every personthis same opportunity. The beneficiaries of the Appeal, afterall, are not just those whom the funds from the Appeal help.Beneficiaries are also those who give--because these haveheard the call of a neighbor and have responded, these havebeen touched by the spirit of charity and have acted, thesehave been conscious of their own stewardship of money andhav.e measured up to what is expected of t~~m.

To bring this about, there is still leg work to be done.

Time To R,e-examineThis is the time of year when many p~rsons are receiv

ing their first Holy Communion, when others are receivingthe sacrament of Confirmation.

It is a time when all Catholics must re-examine whatthese sacraments should mean in their lives. It is very easyamid the challenges and activities of daily life to takesacred things for granted or to give them merely a perfunctory attention and let them go by.

Christ came to make' an essential difference in the livesof His followers. He gave sacraments that are meant to·effect a higher degree of union with the Father and the HolySpirit through the Son.' Nothing, of what He has givenshould ever become routine or be looked upon as a singleaction with no lasting effects.

The innocence of those receiving Holy Communion forthe first time should inspire all Catholics to strive for greaterinnocence in their own lives by receiving the Eucharist moreoften and with a greater awareness of what is done.

The enthusiasm and energy of the young people beingconfirmed should inspire all who are confirmed to rededicatethemselves to their Confirmation vocation,to be witnessand preachers of Christ in their world by the knowledge theyltave and, more especially, by the way they liye their lives.

This is indeed a time to re-examine lives in the light ofthese sacraments.

When it's impossible to get along night's sleep, I sometimescatch a quick nap after dinner.Even if it's. only 20 minutes, itdoes a lot of good.

Don't Feel GuiltyAnd usually, after I've had

some rest, I can better cope withwhatever needs to be done.

Some years ago, an olderwoman whose children werera'ised, dropped in to visit me.My babies were asleep, my tod,\lers were playing. The placewas a mess. And i was soundJsleep on the couch.

I was mortified!She simply said, "Don't ever

~eel guilty about taking a nap. Ifyou can sleep, you need the rest. When your children are grown'they won't remember if the living room was untidy. But theywill remember if you were always too tired to enjoy them."

time I should be doing some-thing I should be busy ...Conse-juently, I take a nap onlyif I'm absolutely exhausted. Andthat rest' isn't as peaceful as itshould be because that undercur-'rent of "wasting time" is stillgnawinJ inside me. '

It's ;:orobably called a "self-defeating attitude," o'r an "achievemEmt complex," or "you've gotto be working to be a good mother neurosis."

Whatever it's called, it's absolutely ridiculous ... partly because there is nothing wrongwith listening to my body's demands for rest. But worse, it hasa deteriorating effect on mywhole day's activities. If I'm'over-tired, even though I maywork constantly for hours, I getless done than if I'm rested. When I'm exhauste{f, I get edgywith the children and find faultwith them ... when all that iswrong is that I need more sleep.

How, How, How?

But in raising a family, yourun into practical complications. How can you nap with toddlersrunning around? How can youget a night's rest when you haveto get up for a hungry infant?

How can you get adequatesleep if you are waiting up forteen-agers to get home ... thenhave to get up early the nextmorning to get whoever it is outfor whatever activity starts earlythe next day?

An easy solution would be tolet the family get themselves outin the morning, but there couldbe a toddler running loose whomight burn down the house. Ifyou sleep as soundly as 'I, itcould happen, imd you'd neverknow it.

If you need more rest, get it!You'll be more useful, and a lotmore pleasant to have around!.Find a solution that works foryour family.

Some years ago, we found one.All week long I survive on shorthours. But two or three times amonth, depending on just howhectic things have been, I sleeplate.

It's usually a Saturday morn·ing. My husband gets up with thekids, and I just sleep until I'mfully slept out. Would you be·lieve 11 or 12 hours?

If YOUI Need R,est, Take It,Advises Mother of Eight

'-"',

Why shouldn't mothers take naps without feelingguilty? Every tjme I snatch a nap I wake up feeling asthough I should have used that time for anyone of ahundred un-done jobs. I've come to the conclusion that,I absolutely must have eighthours sleep ,per night. I'd-feel better rested on nine or10. I generally get less thansix.

But if I lie down during theday my conscience bothers me. Ishouldn't be wasting all that

'Leaderless Tyranny'

Stavins cited inspections ofpersons and baggage at airports, searches ot courtrooms, closedcircuit television .observation ofhigh school corridors, armed es·corts for v,isitors to govemmentbuildings, passes given to hos·pital visitors, and the use ofzoom lenses to observe peopleat shopping centers as proof thatU. S. residents are under martiallaw.

Stavins argued that the sep·aration of powers stipulated inthe Constitution has been preserved While f.reedom has beenabolished and that these twofactors compel the conclusion"that we are livJng in a ·leader·less tyranny."

WhHe Msgr. Egan said Stavinswas right "in calling our attention to threats to civil liberties,he argued that "the legitimate?ointing out of serious problems,In many cases, is harmed byflights of overstatement."

WASHINGTON (NC}-Asser·tions that the United States is al·ready under martiai law and that"we are living in' a leaderlesstyranny" were chaBenged at aConvocation on Ethics and Politics here as "flights of over·statement"

Msgr. J. J. Egan of the Insti·tute for Urban Studies at theUniversity of Notre Dame chal·lenged the assertions made byRalph Stavins of the Washdng·ton·based Institute for PoldcyStudies in one of the two principal papers delivered at the convocation held at the Carmelites'St. Joseph's Priory. The Wash·ington Theological Consortium,an interfaith organization, andthe Institute for NeighborhoodSt'udies sponsored the convocamon.

Americans, Stavins contended,"are stopped and frisked severaltimes a day as if the law weremerely an extension of a soldier's bayonet. The fact that the'soldier' wears a mini·skirt, orthat the citizen ronsents gladly, does not diminish the reality ofmartJial law, but rather provesits univeral support and consen·sus."

Mixed Marriage

olic weekly, The New World. Almost all of the authors are professionals in psychology, psychiatry, or psychotherapy. The articles drew lively response fromthe paper's readers.

. Now the series has been expanded for book publication, andreaders' of the book are invitedto write to the author's, who saythat they are always learning.

As does Mr. Quesnell, the collaborators in this case speak ofthe process of growing togetherin marriage. Each partner has alife style, and their task. togetheris to adjust, to settle differences,to communicate successfully.Sensibie points on all these matters are well made. Sexual dIfficulties in marriage are quite asfrankly discussed' in this bookas in the other.

This does not always work. Itcan be lengthy and at timesunpleasant. But it· "does offerthe possibility of introducingyou to an inteni:e and true livingin the real wor,ld with someoneyou love."

Some questioJ;ls are consideredhere that are either untreated orbriefly alluded toby Mr. Quesnell.

One example is a detaileli examination of tactics' "guaranteeoto facilitate marital' lonelinessand abet emotional distance fromyour spouse." Another is asearching look at the problemsof mixed marriage. Still anotheris a discourse on the death of aspouse and the consequences forthe survivor.

Especially good is a sequenceof pieces on family life and the'upbringi,ng of children. As to thelatter, Dr. George Melhus,' describing what he and his wifetr-ied to do in the rearing of theirchlIdren writes" "We have attempted to create a safe, unthreatening ,atmosphere fromwhich the real Mngers· of thereal world can be accurately assessed and planned for."

Marriage Counseling

More than one of the writersmentions the 'necessity of consistency in the treatment of children. A chj.]o' cannot learn to getalong, if paren~s' attitudes arecapricious and unpredictable.

The subject of marriage counseling is explored. Often such aservice is resorted to at theeleventh hour, when a divorcelawyer has already been approached. This may be becausethe counseling process is feared.

What the marriage counselor'attempts is to get the couple communicating. They are encouragedto talk. "The marriage counselorlistens and tries to turn the talking into communication by asking questions, making connections, and giving interpretations."

Two new books on marriage cover much the sameground, inevitably, and yet each has features which complement, rather than duplicate, what one finds in the other. The books ar€~ "Marriage:' A Discovery Together" by JohnG. Quesnell (Fides, Box F,Notre Dame, Ind. 46556. 262pages. $5), and "28 Experts'View the Sexual Marriage"edited by Edward P. Sheridanand Kathleen Sheridan (Our Sunday Visitor, Non Plaza, Huntington: Ind. 46750. 192 pages. $2.95).

Mr; Quesnell was formerlydirector of the family servicesdepartment of the MinneapolisCatholic Welfare Services, andis now in private practice as amarriage counselor.

He maintains that, for a marriage to work, there must beknowledge and acceptance ofself by each of the partners. Thismust precede knowledge and acceptance of the spouse. Each hasa special and peculiar history;these histories are not identicalor even similar. The partnersmust learn to adjust to ea,ehother's history,.' each other'slanguage-life style.

Commulltication

An essential for growth iscommunication..Many people fail .to understand the importance ofreally talking with one's partner."In many marriages," says Mr.Quesnell, "the c·ommunication isrpore like two Jans blowing ateach other. Inst.ead of listening, the spouses talk at each other."He suggests a practical methodof honest, effective communica-tion. '

All communication is riot verbal. Small talk is valuable,. andcompliments are helpful. But atleast as significant is, f9r exam-

, pie, th(! weeping that a 'womanmay 00. "Wives do not necessarily use crying as a means of manipulating their husbands. It issimply a way of dealing withtheir emotions." But it is alsonecessary "for wives to understand grunting. What cryingmeans to a woman, gruntingmay mean to a man."

A considera'ble part of hisbook is given to frank discussionof marital sex. He recognizes thedamaging results of two falseattitudes regarding sex, the severely repressed and the unconditionally permissive. Then heendeavors to define a sane,,healthy attitude.

He believes that, far from becoming obsolete, marriage ishere to stay, and he prescribesfor its improvement.

Briefly, the genius of Americanpolitics has been pluralism andthe genius of American Catholidsm has. also been pluralism.American' politics is based uponcoalition-building and localismon winning allies for your groupfrom other groups at the grassroots (as Madison made clear inthe "Federalist Papers"). In urban politics, the local coalitionsare built in the precinct. And thereligious side of the nrecinct isthe parish. The precinct and theparish together constitute thatA.merican Catholic phenomenon, the neighborhood.

Re-narkable Commun~ty

Theologize about the neighborhood? What can possibly be remarkable ,about the neighbor-hood? .

The. trouble is, having beenraised in neighborhoods we takethem for granted; we don't realize what an absolutely uniquephenomenon they are in modernurban life. So we turn to theFrench, or the Dutch, or, heavensave us, the Latins to learn aboutbuilding comm~nity, ignoring theremarkableCOItlmuhity in ourmidst; .

But what can coalitions, pre·cincts, parishes, neighborhoodssay about justice and peace?

Coalition politics - neighborhood building, if you will - isabout binding people together, about harmonizing ,conflicting interests, about devising compromises which everyone can livewith. It is, 'in other words, aboutreconciliation.

Which is why I thoiJghtJesuscame into the world.

Asserts; PluralismOf A.",erican

Apparently, a committee has been set tip to presideover American Catholicism's contribution to the nation'sbicentennial. It seems that part of the concern of the committee is justice: and peace-a l~udable enough concern, onesupposes. Who could beagainst justice and peace?Having had my share of experienc~ with ritualistic episcopal committees, I may perhapsbe pardoned for being skepticalthat anything more than ritual isintended. Some pious statement

GREELEY

Will doubtless be issued againstinJustice and war; pep rallieswill be held around the countryto inveigh against these twinevils-in the "third world" rhetoric which passes for serious social and economk analysis inCatholic c,ircles today.

Without having heen asked formy opinion, I'd like to suggesta more appropria,te present. fromthe American CathJ)lic Church tothe Republic of it!l bicentenary. We might just present the country with self-understanding.

'Liberation Theology'Since the disastrous American

is.m controversy sh'Jt off originalCatholic thinking :n the UnitedStates ahriost eight decades ago,American Catholics have takentheir intellectual 'leadershiD fromabroad-from Italy 'and E~glandbefore the Second World War,

,and thereafter in rapid succession from France, Germany andHolland. Now, as the ultimate inself-hatred, we are' turning toLatin America for a "liberationtheology" which is supposed tobe pertinent to our religiousproblems and needB.

Maybe the bishcps 'and theirtechnical experts c,:>uld go backto where we were in 1895 'andask if there is anything in theAmerican Catholic: experiencethat we might share with therest of the country and the restof the world. Can we reflectupon, if not theologize about, our own experienc,e in such away as to illumine problems ofjustice 'and peace?

The alternative is to repeatthe cliches of the liberal left, orthe mindless simpli.cism of thethird world crew, or the hollowenthusiasms of our own wearysocal actionists, or the pontificalwisdom of the Protestant divineswho, at their national meetings, layout 'in an endless series ofresolutions answers to all theproblems of the human race.

Precinct and ParishIt is indicative of our prob

lem that whenever I say "reflecton the l11eaning of the American,Catholic exper, ience," people lookat me like old weird Greeley hasfli;:peq once again. How couldthere be anything in our experi·ence worth refl, ecting upon?

We have come a long way L

since John Ireland.
