Nishikori takes center stage, Halep crashes out
PARIS — Roger Federer avoided any more secu-rity scares to move safely into the third round of the French Open on Wednes-day but danger lurks ahead for the Swiss, namely in the shape of Japanese fire-brand Kei Nishikori.
The perils of Roland Garros were in evidence in the women’s draw too as last year’s runner-up Simona Halep, the third seed, bowed out 7-5, 6-1 to Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni to become the big-gest casualty so far.
The 33-year-old Lucic-Baroni, who made her French Open debut in 1999 as a 17-year-old but took a break from tennis before returning, also beat Halep in last year’s U.S. Open.
“I didn’t feel my game. I don’t have a good feeling, that’s why I couldn’t change anything,” Halep said.
Maria Sharapova, who beat Halep in last year’s final, made short work of fellow Russian Vitalia Diatchenko, winning 6-3, 6-1 to set up a juicy third-round clash with Samantha Stosur.
Stosur, the 2010 runner-up, came within a game of serving up a “double ba-gel” over French wildcard Amandine Hesse but had to be content with 6-0, 6-1.
While second seed Fe-derer was beating Spain’s Marcel Granollers 6-2, 7-6 (1), 6-3, Nishikori took center stage on Court Phil-lipe Chatrier and a straight-sets win over Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci offered further proof of his grow-ing threat.
Left-hander Bellucci is
one of the form players on clay this year, but 25-year-old Nishikori passed the test with flying colors, winning 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the third round for only the second time.
“I have a lot of confi-dence on clay right now, so I hope I can do well here, because I haven’t done so well before,” said Nishiko-ri who last year became the first Asian male to reach a grand slam final at the U.S. Open.
“I’m feeling really well after these two matches and winning in three sets against a tough player like Thomaz.”
Bellucci, ranked 40th, arrived in Paris full of confidence after winning the Geneva title last week, but the relentless Nishikori wore him down in a high-quality contest.
Nishikori, who has 1989 champion Michael Chang in his corner, needed to be at full-throttle throughout though.
He saved a break point at 2-3 in the opening set and then struck decisively at 5-5, nailing a forehand
winner at the end of a blis-tering 22-stroke baseline rally for a decisive break.
Nishikori was broken twice, at 5-2 in the second and third sets, but neither proved too damaging as he moved through to a third round clash with Ger-many’s Benjamin Becker who beat Spanish 32nd seed Fernando Verdasco in a five-set cliffhanger.
There was no repeat of Sunday’s scenes when a fan ran on to court for a selfie with 17-time grand slam champion Federer, the only trouble the Swiss encoun-tering on Wednesday was a 4-2 second-set deficit which he quickly fixed.
Federer, on collision course with Nishikori in the semifinal, will play Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur in round three after he beat Marcos Baghdatis.
Eighth seed Stanislas Wawrinka also made prog-ress, beating Serbian Du-san Lajovic, and it was a fantastic day for the French with five men reaching the third round and Alize Cornet progressing in the women’s draw.

World soccer rocked by arrests of FIFA officials
The world’s most popular sport was plunged into turmoil on Wednes-day as seven senior soccer officials were arrested on U.S. corruption charges and faced extradition from Switzerland, whose au-thorities also announced a criminal investigation into the awarding of the next two World Cups.
The arrests in a dawn raid at a five-star Zurich hotel mark an unprec-edented blow against soccer’s governing body FIFA, which for years has been dogged by allega-tions of corruption but always escaped major criminal cases.
U.S. prosecutors said they aimed to make more arrests but would not be drawn on whether FIFA President Sepp Blatter, for long the most power-ful man in the sport, was a target of the probe. Blatter, 79, is standing for re-election to a fifth term at the FIFA Congress in Zurich on Friday, and FIFA said the vote would go ahead as planned.
The European soccer body UEFA called for the election to be postponed, saying “the European associations will have to consider carefully if they should even attend this Congress.”
In a scathing indictment of corruption in soccer, U.S. authorities said nine officials and five sports media and promotions executives were charged in cases involving more than $150 million in bribes over a period of 24 years. They said their
investigation exposed complex money launder-ing schemes, millions of dollars in untaxed incomes and tens of mil-lions in offshore accounts held by FIFA officials.
Swiss police arrested the seven, all from the Latin American and Caribbean region, and detained them pending extradition proceedings to the United States, which could take years if they contest the process. The Federal Office of Justice in Switzerland said that six would contest extradi-tion, but that one person agreed to be extradited.
“As charged in the indictment, the defen-dants fostered a culture of corruption and greed that created an uneven playing field for the biggest sport in the world,” said Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey. “Undisclosed and illegal payments, kickbacks and bribes became a way of doing business at FIFA.”
Blatter, who has denied and survived allegations of his involvement in corruption, said in a state-ment: “Let me be clear: such misconduct has no place in football and we will ensure that those who engage in it are put out of the game.”
The statement also said that FIFA welcomed the actions and the investiga-tions “and believe that it will help to reinforce measures that FIFA has al-ready taken to root out any wrongdoing in football.”
Separate from the U.S. investigation, Swiss prosecutors said they had opened their own crimi-nal proceedings against unidentified people on suspicion of mismanage-
ment and money launder-ing related to the awarding of rights to host the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 event in Qatar.
U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch told report-ers at a news conference in New York her office did not want to impede the 2018 and 2022 World Cups but looked forward to working with Swiss au-thorities investigating the award of the tournaments.
“FIFA has a lot of soul searching to do,” she said.
The indictment accused the officials of using a variety of schemes to take kickbacks and bribes from sports marketing firms connected to major tour-naments, and also alleged corruption in the selection of the 2010 World Cup host and the 2011 FIFA presidential election.
One of those indicted, former FIFA Vice Presi-dent Jack Warner of Trini-dad, solicited $10 million in bribes from the South African government to host the 2010 World Cup, the Justice Department said.
Warner directed a number of co-conspirators to arrange the payment, which was eventually sent from a FIFA account in Switzerland to a Bank of America account in New York that Warner controlled, the indictment said. The South African Football Association called the bribe allegations “baseless and untested.”
Warner, former FIFA vice president and execu-tive committee member of CONCACAF (Confed-eration of North, Central America, Caribbean As-sociation Football), said in a statement that he was innocent of any charges.
