Two questions were being asked in our study.

1. What are the best practices when using PowerPoint in the classroom?

2. When these best practices are applied, is student learning enhanced?

This was a pilot study and gave us only indicators.

Further research is necessary to complete the picture.

What are we trying to determine?

Animation Tutorial for PowerPoint Users

… by setting forth possible best practices for PowerPoint as demonstrated by experience.

… by examining the effectiveness of these best practices through a comparison with a single traditional lecture class.

… by examining the effectiveness of these best practices through a comparison with a national study of traditional and interactive lectures.

How did we answer these questions?

What can we see from a comparison to national studies?

Animation Tutorial for PowerPoint Users

There seem to be specific uses of PowerPoint that are effective as learning enablers.

Best practices for PowerPoint bring learning gains that are not as good as interactive learning but better than traditional lecture.

What did we see?

Animation Tutorial for PowerPoint Users

Further work needs to be done to…

understand the full impact of PowerPoint in the classroom.

determine if misuse of PowerPoint truly detracts from learning.

determine which of the best practices bring the greatest gain.

see if PowerPoint lectures mixed with interactive learning have a cumulative impact.

Look into attitudinal response from students and faculty.
