Johnhas owned and managed a very prosperousbusiness for many years. From time to timethere have been crises in their lives that havecaused them to go into debt, but they havealways dug their way out and paid their bills. One day, John comes home from a busi-ness trip and his wife greets him at the door. She says, While you were away, I fixed every-thing! Remember how you said that you areconcerned about the people in our town thatdont have jobs? I have hired most of them. The bumpy streets that you have complainedabout, Im hired 200 people to fix them.Remember how weve said, The childrenare our future? I have hired 1,000 people tobuild a new school and they have alreadymade a good start on it. Were going to makesure that no child gets left behind.Remember how weve said, I wish therewas more we could do for the homeless? Ihave taken care of that. I am building housesfor all of them. John says, Where did youget the money for all of this? Mary says, Itwasnt hard! We have always paid our bills. Ijust asked the credit card companies toincrease our debt ceiling and they were happyto do so. I went to all of the local banks andthey were all happy to loan the money forthese worthy projects because they know youalways pay your bills, John. I also borrowed afew million from your Chinese associates andgave it to the poor people in town.John replies, Mary, we could have doneall of these things and more. I was about tomake a big investment in my company to dra-matically increase production, but now you'vewiped out my bank account and there is noth-ing left. Now we are ruined! You may have guessed by now that this littleparable is about the U.S. economy. John is theAmerican taxpayer, and Mary is the govern-ment. While it is true that the American tax-payer has been very productive, caring, andgenerous, his wealth has been promised farbeyond his ability to pay. And now he is ruined.Another great civilization falls into the Usedto Be Great column of history along withEgypt, Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome.Paul Halley, Stow Creek, NJArts Need More Than Lip ServiceThere has been much discussion about theway in which student cumulative averages arecalculated. I do not really wish to commenton that aspect, with the exception of congrat-ulating all of the students who have workedso hard, to make education a priority. I canonly hope that the matter can be resolved, butthere is another consideration that has longbeen ignored or tolerated. That would have todo with the fine and performing arts. Thesecourses should also be weighted, due to theamount of personal and team effort each stu-dent must put into them. Many academic stu-dents who are also talented in fine and per-forming arts do not take these classes becausethey are not weighted and can actually nega-tively affect the overall average. Many of thesecourses carry additional credits, but still lackthe weight to push the averages higher. No one likes to hear the When I was aboy... stories, but when I took part in band andchoral activities, each course was worth 2.5credits. We worked hard to perform, but therewere few extra benefits. There were no compe-titions, very little in the way of local scholar-ships. You simply did your best. The cold-war-era thinking that existed into the 1960s pre-pared you for college or the work force, withfew other choices. You were trained as brain orbrawn and that was the extent of it.We have allegedly come so far from thatthinking, extolling creativity, multiple intelli-gences, free thinking, finding your dream andother great-sounding catch phrases, but whathave we done to place themin the realmof seri-ous academics? The 1960s model still appearsto be in place. It is time for lip service to end! Many of our students excell [in local per-formances and exhibits] and many hours gointo these events and they contribute not onlyto the performance or exhibit, but also tooverall study skills, teamwork, memory, sequencing, history, culture and social issues. These events can lead to understanding! From an academic perspective, theseevents may not involve scientific or math for-mulas or equations, but has anyone thoughtabout dancing steps, learning to play an instru-ment, ear training, voicing, artistic techniques, musical theory? These may prove to be aschallenging, plus they offer entertainment, beauty and positive acclaim to the community.I would like to request that all boards ofeducation and members of the administrationtake a closer look at creating an equal playingfield for these students.Warren L. Crescenzo, VinelandClass Rank: Level the Playing FieldI can understand the desire and drive of thestudents to achieve the rank of class valedicto-rian. Unfortunately, there currently seems to betoo many ways students can gain unfair advan-tage over other students in their pursuit of aca-demic excellence. I would suggest the follow-ing changes be effective for the coming aca-demic school year in September. Courseworksuccessfully completed at the high school com-plex will be the only determining factor inarriving at class rank. Any classes completedoutside of the Vineland High School campuswill be for student enrichment purposes onlyand not have any bearing in calculating thegrade point average. Students should not beallowed to skip lunch to take an additionalcourse to inflate their grade point average.Advance Placement courses that the studentstake should continue as they have in the past. The guidance counselors play a pivotal role asthey advise the students concerning theircourse selections throughout their four years atVHS. These changes would make for a morelevel playing field for all students.David M. Levin, Vineland {2}thegrapevine|JUNE13,2012To qualied buyers: See dealer for complete details on select models.
