Second-row Bucket Seats

Freestar

Freestar

7July 2005

Second-row Bucket Seats• Second-row bucket seats are designed to tumble forward to

allow easy access to the third-row seating area or to allowfor additional cargo capacity without the need to completelyremove the seats

• The seats are folded using a simple one-hand, one-leverdesign, making them easy to use

• Pulling up on the lever located on the bottom of the seatcauses the seatback to fold forward and lay down on theseat bottom, while at the same time releasing the seatlatches from the floor. Continuing to pull up on the levercauses the seat to “tumble” forward

• Minimal effort is needed to tumble the seat forward due tothe gas assist strut located in the center of the seat. The struthas two benefits. First, it pushes on the seat bottom, makingthe seat easier to tumble forward. Second, because the strutis pushing on the seat bottom, it holds the seat in itstumbled position. The seat will not fall back into placeunder hard acceleration

• If additional cargo space is needed, the second-row seat can be completely removed

• With the third-row seat folded into the floor and the second-row seats removed, Freestar has 135.7 cubic feet of cargo volume

• Second-row bucket seats have fore-and-aft adjustments that allow the seats to move forward and backward to give second- and third-row passengers additional leg room when needed

3rd Row Tailgate Bench SeatTM

Second-row bucket seats that can fold down and tumble forwardMany Freestar customers are likely to have kids and since they will most likely be traveling in the third-row seats, show one of the customer’s kids how to operate the second-row seat. Thenencourage the kids to use the seat. The simple, intuitive design ofthe seat makes it easy for even a child to use. And with the assiststrut helping to reduce the force necessary to “tumble” the seat, using the seat is so easy a child can do it.

Presentation Tip

Storing Feature• Freestar features an ingenious 3rd Row Tailgate Bench Seat

that stows in the floor when not in use• This seat design eliminates the need to remove a heavy

third-row seat when additional cargo room is needed• No more having to remove the seat and store it in the

garage. The seat is there when you need it and is out of sight when you don’t

• Provides the convenience of not having to plan ahead whenextra cargo space might be needed

• The seat is folded with a simple three-step process. With the head restraints pushed all the way down:

1. Pull strap 1, then fold the seatback down2. Pull strap 2 to release the seat3. Pull strap 3 to flip the seat back into the floor

• The head restraints are designed so that they do not needto be removed prior to folding the seat into the floor

• The “shingled” or recessed design allows the restraints tobe pushed down flush with the seatback

• With the head restraints pushed down, the driver has abetter view out of the rear window

Tailgate Feature• From the standard seating position the entire third-row seat

can be reversed toward the cargo opening to provide aconvenient seating area for tailgating or watching the kidsplay soccer from the sidelines(1)

• The seating area is protected from rain by the liftgate soeveryone stays dry

Storage Well• When the 3rd Row Tailgate Bench Seat is not folded into

the floor, there is a convenient storage well located justbehind the seat

• The deep storage well is designed to hold smaller items. It helps keep them in place and prevents them from beingscattered in the vehicle if the driver happens to hit thebrakes hard or makes an evasive maneuver

• Traditional minivan designs have a flat floor area locatedbehind the third-row seat. This design is not good forkeeping items in place like groceries in plastic grocerybags or sports equipment like soccer balls and baseballs

(1) The 3rd Row Tailgate Bench Seat should be put into position and used onlywhen vehicle is stopped and in Park. While in tailgate mode, the seat is notintended for passenger seating while vehicle is in motion.

Child-seat Presenter/Second-row Bench Seat• Freestar models equipped with a

second-row bench seat feature achild-seat presenter that helps givefront-seat passengers easy access to achild in the second-row seat

• The entire bench seat can moveforward approximately 7 inchescloser to the front seats, making iteasier to reach a child who is securedin a child safety seat

• Moving the second-row seat closer tothe front seats allows more rear-seatleg room for third-row passengers

Tri-zone Climate Control• Tri-zone climate controls are made up of dual-zone

temperature controls for the driver and front passenger andseparate controls for rear-seat passengers

• The dual-zone controls allow the driver and front passengerto set their own desired temperature using manual controls. The controls allow up to approximately a 20-degreedifference in temperature settings between both occupants

• Freestar Limited models feature an automatic dual-zoneclimate control that provides digital temperature readouts

– The front-seat occupants can set their own individualtemperature settings and the climate-control system willautomatically maintain those settings by adjusting theairflow mixture or changing the fan’s speed

– No passenger interaction is required once the initialtemperature is set

• Rear-seat passengers have their own set of temperature andfan speed controls. The climate-control system allows rear-seat passengers to control their own temperature settingsusing manual controls found in the headliner. The rotarycontrol for the temperature setting controls the desiredtemperature along with the airflow output. If cold air isdesired, the airflow will be directed out of the headliner. If hotter temperatures are required, the airflow will bedirected out of vents located near the floor. Set thetemperature control in the middle and the airflow will beblended between the headliner and floor area

• If the rear-seat occupants are too small to use the controls, the front-seat passengers can control the rear temperatureand fan speed using the climate controls located in theinstrument panel

Engineering InsightAirflow through Freestar is enhanced through the use of two air extractors, one each located in the lower rear sides of thepassenger compartment. Acting as a type of one-way valve, the air extractors help pull air from the front of the vehicle to the back, allowing air to only leave the interior through them.

Finding the right amount of airflow through a vehicle isimportant. Like a contractor calculating the best way toinsulate a home, too much air passing through walls andwindows decreases comfort and increases noise. Too little airmovement can create an area with stagnant, uncomfortableand potentially unhealthy air.

The benefits of improved airflow include:

• Greater passenger comfort because the climate-control system can function efficiently and predictably

• Enhanced visibility by pulling air across the inside windows, decreasing possible condensation on the interior windows

Key FeaturesSafety is a primary concern for minivan buyers. While any minivan can go to the grocery store or haul a few bags of mulch, when it comes to transporting family members, most customers will stop and think twice about available protection. The Freestar engineering team didn’t take safety lightly, and neither will your customers. Freestar has more available safety and security features than any other minivan.(1)

However, keep in mind that Freestar’s advantages don’t stop at safety features. Freestar also offers excellent steering, ride andperformance characteristics. And, it features innovative interior design, including storage features and flexible seating.

Four-wheel Disc Brakes with ABS — help prevent wheel lockup; helpmaintain steering control in a hard-braking situationPersonal Safety System® — adjustsdeployment of front airbags to enhanceprotection for the occupants, dependingon a number of collision factorsHeated Power Safety Signal Mirrors —offer a flashing light warning for slidingside doors to alert anyone in theimmediate area that passengers areentering or exiting the vehicleSliding Side Doors with Child SafetyLocks — allow easy access to passengercompartment, while preventing kids fromopening doors from inside

Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) • When the ABS sensors detect

impending slippage on the rear tires, the EBD system sends the optimumamount of braking pressure to therear brakes at all times and under avariety of loads

• Enables all four tires to give themaximum amount of braking they arecapable of generating

• Benefits include:– Improved braking under heavy

loads– Fewer occurrences of ABS

activation– Allows all four wheels to provide

optimum braking

Safety CanopyTM System — combines the benefits of side curtain airbags androllover sensors for protection. Duringcertain side-impact collisions, theairbags deploy across all three rows ofseats. During certain rollover events, both airbags will deploy and stayinflated for a longer period of time• Includes front-seat-mounted

side-impact airbags• Optional on all modelsAll-Speed Traction Control — uses acombination of braking and/or enginemanagement to help the vehiclemaintain traction on slippery roads• Included with AdvanceTrac®

Other Features“Safety Cell” Construction• Transfers collision forces around

passenger compartment to help absorb impact

High-strength Side-door Intrusion Beams• Add structural stability• Absorb energy• Help protect from intrusions into the

passenger compartment

IIHS Best Pick Rating• The 2005 Freestar received a Best

Pick rating from the Insurance Institutefor Highway Safety (IIHS) in frontaloffset crash testing

• It is anticipated that Freestar willagain receive this rating for 2006

Front and Rear Crumple Zones• Engineered to deform, or crumple, in

a collision• Allow vehicle structure to absorb

some of the impact force

Foam Bolsters• Energy-absorbing foam is also located

in the door panels• Foam bolsters are stowed between the

door outer panel and interior trim panel• During a side impact, the bumper of

the oncoming vehicle pushes the foam bolsters toward the occupant

• The foam bolsters push the driver or front passenger away from theoncoming vehicle and help cushionthe occupant

NHTSA Rating• Five-star government frontal crash test

rating by NHTSA for the driver andright front passenger — the highestpossible rating

• It is anticipated that Freestar willagain receive this rating for 2006

A Closer Look: Airbags

Personal Safety System®

If your customers have concerns about airbag safety, explain that Freestar uses a Dual-stage Driver and Right Front PassengerAirbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) that provides the capability of deploying in the full-powered mode or with lesspressure in the Stage 1 mode. In less severe accidents, airbags deploy with less force — or not at all — helping to reduce therisk of injury due to the inflation of the airbag. Even the “go/no go” decision is based on different thresholds, depending onfactors like safety belt usage and crash severity. In an overall sense, the system helps to make sure the appropriate level ofairbag pressure is used for optimum protection.

Front Passenger Sensing System (FPSS)• The front passenger sensing system uses the front

passenger occupant classification sensor and safetybelt tension sensor to detect the presence of aproperly seated person and determine if the frontpassenger frontal airbag should or should not beenabled. The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to recognize three conditions:1. When the front seat is empty2. When a small person is seated 3. When an adult is seated in the 3. front passenger seatWhen the system senses that the front seat isempty, it disables the front passenger airbag. The system can also detect small/medium objects placed on the seat and, therefore, is designed todisable the passenger airbag when it detects anobject such as a small purse or briefcase

• To determine if a small person is seated in the frontpassenger seat, the system uses information fromboth the seat weight sensor and safety belt tensionsensor to determine if the passenger airbag shouldbe disabled. The system does not lessen theimportant safety message to keep children properlyrestrained in the back seat. The system is designedin accordance with the performance requirementsof Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208. This requires that the front passenger frontal airbagbe disabled for a 6-year-old child because a childwho is 6 years of age generally weighs between46.5 and 56.5 pounds, and is between 45 and49 inches in height. The system also is designedto recognize properly installed child restraint seatsplaced in the front passenger seat. When theairbag is disabled because the small person hasbeen detected by the system, the “passengerairbag off” lamp on the display panel is illuminated

• When the system detects a properly seated adult, the front passenger airbag is active and the“passenger airbag off” lamp will not illuminate

®

Dual-stage Driver and Right FrontPassenger Airbags — provide thecapability of deploying in the full-powered mode, or with lesspressure in the Stage 1 mode. Inless severe frontal crashes, airbagsinflate with less force — or not atall — helping to reduce the risk ofinjury due to the inflation of theairbag. The system helps to makesure the appropriate level ofairbag pressure is used

Electronic Front Crash SeveritySensor — provides the RestraintControl Module (RCM) with anearly indication of the severity ofthe impact. This allows the RCM tocalculate crash severity early on inthe collision so that it candetermine the appropriate pressureto inflate the airbags, and alsowhether to activate the safety beltpretensioners

Front Outboard Safety Belt EnergyManagement Retractors —gradually, allow the safety belt toloosen if necessary — reducing theforce of the belts on the occupants’chests and allowing them to moveforward very slightly and into theairbags

Driver’s-seat Position Sensor —tells the Restraint Control Module(RCM) where the driver’s seat is inrelation to the steering wheel. Thecloseness of the seat to the steeringwheel will help determine the airbagpressure that will be deployed. If the sensor determines that theseat is close to the steering wheel,Stage 1 (lower pressure) will beactivated. Stage 2 is deactivatedat this time

Front Outboard Safety Belt UsageSensors — monitor whether thedriver and right front passengerare buckled up. At higher speeds, airbags need to deploy withgreater pressure if front-seatpassengers haven’t buckled theirsafety belts. At lower speeds with safety belts buckled, airbagscan deploy with less pressure, helping to reduce the risk ofairbag-related injuries

Front Outboard Safety BeltPretensioners — cause the frontsafety belts to tighten, holdingthem firmly against the occupants, before the airbags inflate. Thishelps reduce the force of the beltson the occupants and helps toeffectively restrain the occupants

Personal Safety System RestraintControl Module (RCM) — is asophisticated computer locatedunder the instrument panel at thefront edge of the passengercompartment. The RCM receivessignals from the front satellite crashseverity sensor, and judges howfast the vehicle is decelerating. It also processes signals from theother Personal Safety Systemsensors and determines how thedual-stage front airbags and safetybelt pretensioners will deploy

Safety CanopyTM System• The optional Safety Canopy System consists of side curtain

airbags and rollover sensors

• These air curtains are triggered independently from thedriver and passenger front airbags. The side curtain airbag, made up of a single assembly with two air chambers, inflates to a thickness of about 4 inches. Side curtainairbags are located in the roof side rail behind theheadliner. They deploy downward and outward, toward the side window opening

• The rollover sensor technology measures angular velocityand lateral acceleration to predict the vehicle’s propensityto roll. If the rollover-sensing threshold is reached, thesensor signals deployment of the occupant protectiondevices

Side curtain airbags will not interfere with a properly installedchild safety seat or booster seat:

• Because of the angle of deployment and the fact thatdeployed airbags do not cover the entire side windowglass, they will not interfere with a properly installed childsafety seat or booster seat

Included with the Safety Canopy System are front-seat-mounted side-impact airbags. These airbags provideadditional protection for the driver and right front passenger. They help protect the lower portion of the body in certain sidecollisions. Also, they inflate from the outboard side of the frontseatbacks and not the doors, so no matter how the seat ispositioned, the airbags inflate in the optimum position for thedriver and the right front passenger.

Combined with the Safety Canopy, the front-seat side-impactairbags provide protection for both the head and chest of front-seat occupants in certain side-impact collisions.

Engineering InsightA unique feature of the Safety Canopy System is the amountof time the airbags are inflated. Unlike front airbags thatdeflate immediately after deployment, the side curtain airbagsin Freestar stay inflated for a longer period of time. Keepingthe airbags inflated for a longer period of time helps protectthe occupants from multiple rollovers and secondary impactsthat could happen a few seconds after the initial impact occurs.

Four-wheel Disc Brakes with Anti-lock Braking System• Freestar features a standard four-wheel disc Anti-lock

Braking System (ABS)

• Disc brakes are more resistant to fade than drum brakes

• Freestar features large 11.5-inch rotors in the front and 12.2-inch rotors in the rear. These large brakes help slowFreestar with little pedal effort and are also designed tohelp reduce stopping distances

• This system offers a tight and responsive pedal feel. It canbrake all four wheels independently for accurate control

• When the computer-controlled sensors indicate wheellockup during hard braking, the Anti-lock Braking System(ABS) electronically “pumps” the brakes several times persecond

• This system helps drivers to maintain steering control inemergency or other hard-braking situations, such as whenavoiding a stalled car or a car backing into the roadway— especially when road conditions are slippery

Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) • When the ABS sensors detect impending slippage on the rear

tires, the EBD system sends the optimum amount of brakingpressure to the rear brakes at all times and under a varietyof loads

• EBD enables all four tires to give the maximum amount of braking they are capable of generating under a variety of loads

• Benefits include:– Improved braking under heavy loads– Fewer occurrences of ABS activation– Allows all four wheels to provide optimum braking

Safety CanopyMany of your customers will want to know where the side curtainairbags are located on the vehicle. The side curtain airbags arewell hidden within Freestar’s interior. There is one on each side ofthe vehicle and they fit above the window line. The rolled curtainmounts on the sheet metal roof rail concealed behind the headliner. The stowed bag is located between the A-pillar and D-pillar.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)• Uses a tire pressure sensor mounted to a metal band and banded in the wheel’s drop well• Sensors use radio frequency transmitters to send this tire pressure information to the vehicle’s onboard computer• The computer illuminates a warning light and sounds an audible tone(1) if tire pressure is significantly low• The system is completely hidden

from sight and uses a standard rubbervalve stem

• Can be used on steel or aluminum wheels• Replacing the tire can be easily done

without removing the sensor• TPMS provides a more accurate tire

pressure reading because it measuresactual tire pressure as opposed to wheelspeed like the Low Tire Warning System

• Resetting the system is easy. Once tirepressure has been restored to itsrecommended level, TPMS-equipped vehicles simply need to be driven over 20 mph for at least 2 minutes to be reset

Low Tire Warning Light

SolidWarningLight

Customer Action Required

Check tire pressure to ensure proper inflation. Ford recommends a digital or dial-type tire pressure gauge for increased accuracy.• After inflating tires to manufacturer’s recommended pressure as shown on the tire

label, the vehicle must be driven for at least 2 minutes at 20 mph to turn the light offand reset the system

• If the light remains on even after these steps have been taken, have the systeminspected by the dealership Service Department

NOTE: If the outside overnight temperature is significantly lower than the daytimetemperature, tire pressure may decrease 1 psi for every 10 degrees F in temperaturechange. This may cause the TPMS warning to illuminate. If all tires appear to be inflated, customers should manually check the pressure and inflate all the tires to the recommendedcold pressure.

Driving on the spare tire may activate the TPMS warning light. Repair the damagedroad wheel and remount it on the vehicle. Reset the TPMS by driving 20 mph for atleast 2 minutes.• If the tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure and the spare

tire is not in use, have the system inspected by the Service Department

To help a customer understand the concept of a hydromount you can use this illustration.A solid rubber hockey puck represents a traditional solid rubber engine mount. Have your customer imagine hitting the hockey puck with something solid like a coffeemug. The hockey puck would not absorb much of the force. The same thing happenswith engine vibration. Now have your customer imagine striking a rubber hot waterbottle with the coffee mug. The rubber hot water bottle absorbs the force much moreeffectively. In a similar manner, the liquid-filled mount absorbs engine vibrations to helpprevent those forces from entering the passenger compartment.

Presentation Tip

• Freestar features standard four-wheel disc brakes

• Disc brakes are more resistant to fade than drum brakes

• Freestar features large 11.5-inch rotors in the front and 12.2-inch rotors in the rear

• Large brakes help slow Freestar with little pedal effort

• Offer a tight and responsive pedal feel

• Due to the large brakes, all Freestar models come standardwith 16-inch wheels

Four-wheel Disc Brakes

• Freestar features three engine hydromounts to help isolatethe passenger compartment from engine vibrations

• A hydromount is an engine mount filled with fluid (glycol)

• The hydromount can be made to react to many differentvibration frequencies, compared to a conventional rubbermount which is designed for one specific frequency

• Hydromounts are designed to provide better passenger-compartment comfort — whether sitting still (idling)or traveling

The Freestar engineering team visited the Oakville (Ontario) Assembly Plant where Freestar is built to experience Freestar’s buildprocess. Working with the same tools that line workers use daily, the team searched for process improvements to help reduceworker fatigue. By focusing on the details of Freestar’s assembly and using a team approach, assembly line worker fatigue wasreduced, resulting in higher vehicle quality.

Freestar customers are looking for a vehicle they can trust to offer safety, convenience and reliable power. On top of that, customers also expect their vehicle to look good. Freestar offers customers aerodynamic styling combined with a sturdy, powerful appearance. Freestar challenges the belief that you have to sacrifice good looks and style for space, comfort and convenience.

Key Features

Freestar’s interior design, along with innovative features likethe 3rd Row Tailgate Bench SeatTM, is designed to makeFreestar Ford’s most versatile minivan ever. The Freestar BodyEngineering Team focused on three key areas for the interior:style, comfort and convenience. These three attributes can beseen throughout Freestar’s interior. A progressive, elegant andfresh appearance. Ergonomics and seat function cater tocomfort with flexible seating configurations and multiplestorage areas for customer convenience.

Engineering InsightDuring early development of the Freestar interior, engineerswore an Empathy Belly pregnancy simulator. The EmpathyBelly is designed to simulate what it would feel like to bepregnant. It is a multi-component weighted garment that —through medically accurate simulation — enables people toexperience over 20 symptoms and effects of pregnancy. Thegarment includes a large water-filled “belly,” a tight corsetthat restricts breathing and two 7-pound metal balls thatemulate fetal movement. This experience helped engineersdesign a more ergonomic and “pregnant friendly” interior.

Dual Manual Sliding Easy entrance and exit, and access to the passenger compartmentSide Doors

Additional Features

This Freestar feature might go unnoticed by customers unless you point it out to them. Check out how the liftgate opens. The liftgate handle uses a “wraparound” design. This means that your hand wraps around the handle for a positive, solid grip. Also, notice how big the handle is. There is plenty of room for even a gloved hand. The design also takes advantage of thenatural motion of your arm. As you pull out on the handle, your arm naturally wants to go up with the liftgate.
