On board was the elderly Apostle John, oneof the newest prisoners to be delivered to this forbid-ding fragment of rugged land jutting out of theAegeans blue waters in the region known as theIcarian Sea. > Designated as a prison where many of Romes

worst enemies and criminals were incarcerated, this small, desolate islandbelonged to a group of islands known as the Sporades. It was located 24

miles off the coastline of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), approximately

60 miles from the ancient city of Ephesus.

Roman society had

a high tolerance for

human abuse. Yet even

Roman law demandedfair treatment of pris-

oners , espec ia l ly i f

they were Roman citi-zens. However, since Patmos was isolated, desolate

and mostly forsaken, what transpired there wasnt

visible to the public eye. As a resu lt, laws that guar-anteed the good treatment of prisoners could be, and

often were, ignored. Thus, the Roman government

considered Patmos to be an ideal place for especially

dangerous criminals, who were often transferred thereso soldiers, wardens and interrogators could treat them

with a level of brutal ity that wouldnt have been toler-

ated elsewhere.

If you do not know

Jesusas your Savior and Lord, simply

pray the following prayer in faith,

and Jesus will be your Lord!

Heavenly Father, I come

to You in the Name of Jesus.

Your Word says, Whosoever

shall call on the name of the

Lord shall be saved and If

thou shalt confess with thy

mouth the Lord Jesus, and

shalt believe in thine heart that

God hath raised him from the

dead, thou shalt be saved

(Acts 2:21; Romans 10:9). You

said my salvation would be

the result of Your Holy Spirit

giving me new birth by com-
