The Healing Hearts Prayer Ministry invites everyone to join in its quarterly 2000 Hail Mary Prayers to be held at the St. Justin Martyr Parish Center Chapel on the first Saturday of August, August 2nd. The schedule is as follows:

JACKPOT In our lottery- and sweepstakes-obsessed culture, it is common

to ask ourselves or others what they would do if they won. In to-day's first reading, Solomon certainly hits the jackpot. What prize could be greater than having God Almighty agree to give you what-ever you ask for?

Out of all the things he could have asked for, Solomon chose to ask for understanding, and was rewarded with it. We would do well to wonder what we would ask for if God made us the same offer. Actually God does make us the same offer each and every day, by granting us another day of life, a bit of the earth's goods, some gift or ability, some call to goodness, some portion of the divine will. Each of these is a "prize." We should stop and examine what we are going to do with our prize: keep it or use it selfishly, or put it at the service of the spread of the gospel? Copyright (c) J. S. Treasures from our Tradition By the dawn of the fourteenth century, the sacrament of confir-

mation was ripe for a rescue, since vast numbers of the faithful never received it, and when it was celebrated, it was done so in iso-lation from baptism and Eucharist. A bishop named William Duran-dus set out to reclaim this liturgy, but he had a creative touch and added some things into the mix that had never been thought of be-fore. One was a slap. Oddly, he replaced the kiss of peace at the end of confirmation with a slap on the cheek that endured to modern times. This "wake-up call" was related in his imagination to a cus-tom in the military, wherein ceremonies of knighthood and investi-ture involved a symbolic wound as a sign of willingness to suffer.

Within every congregation today there are people who have memories of fretting through their confirmation liturgies, anxious to know how enthusiastic a slap the bishop would bestow. Durandus loved symbolism and had a reason for every ritual and practice, but his creative spin on the celebration shows how sadly adrift confir-mation was from its anchorage in baptism, how far off-course from its home port of the eucharistic community. --Rev. SRE Registration, Grades K-8 The School of Religious Education is having registration for

classes beginning in September 2014 for all students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Students must re-register for the 2014-15 year. Forms are available in the Religious Education Office. Registration is on a space available basis only.

The registration fee is applicable each year. Registration fees are: $80.00 for 1 student, $125.00 for 2 students, and $150.00 for 3 or more students. No one is turned away who is unable to pay, however if this is the situation please contact the Director of Reli-gious Education.

REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA Vivir en el Reino de Dios

1 Reyes 3:5, 7-12 Adonias, el cuarto hijo de David, es el candidato

natural al trono de su padre, pero no hay ley que le ase-gure tal sucesión: serán su voluntad y sus estrategias. En las cortes siempre hay intrigantes y, lógicamente, en el caso de la sucesión de David, todos los complots están disparados. Adonias cuenta con apoyos importantes. Reúne a todos sus partidarios en un banquete sacrificial, al cual existen sus hermanos y los oficiales reales, tanto amigos como enemigos. Romanos 8:28-30

Pablo se refiere aquí a los predestinados. Nada hace pensar en una predestinación al mal, ni en una predesti-nación de algunos. Habla más bien de que en este desig-nio entran algunos y otros no. El designio es que todo llegue a través de Cristo. El designio consiste en que en Cristo somos llamados a reproducir su imagen. Así, sin merecerlo, somos elegidos en el. Mateo 13:44-52

El tesoro escondido y la perla de extraordinario va-lor son motivos muy frecuentes en los cuentos orienta-les. Un sueño se ha cumplido: un hallazgo tan asombro-so llena de estupor y hace experimentar una alegría enorme. Como el tesoro y la perla valen más que todas las demás posesiones, el que los encuentra renuncia a todo lo demás.

Jesús presenta el reino de Dios como un descubri-miento que disipa toda duda y vacilación. Es una deci-sión radical, originada en la fascinación que produce el descubrimiento del reino. El reino de Dios no llega co-mo una exigencia que reclama un sacrificio extraordina-rio o heroico. Al contrario, es un gozoso don de Dios que hace feliz.

Nuestra cultura Muchas veces la gente hispana no se siente “digna”

de haber sido llamada o elegida. Necesita hacer un traba-jo interior de escucha a una llamada que no tiene mucho que ver con el derecho a algo o el merecimiento, sino con la voluntad de Dios.

Ser padres Sin duda alguna, la mayor bendición que puede recibir un ser

humano es convertirse en padre. Ya sea biológicamente o por adop-ción, la magia de la conexión de padres e hijos es algo inexplicable.

Ser padres hoy en día presenta varios retos, uno de ellos, el costo de vida cada día más alto. El cuidado de niños es extremadamente ele-vado y la opción de quedarse en casa a cuidar a los hijos representa un reto económico para la familia, si no se goza de un sueldo de seis ci-fras. En estos tiempos, donde los valores se han ido perdiendo, nuestro trabajo como formadores y educadores es formar a nuestros hijos en la fe, con amor y valores.

Como dijo el Papa Francisco en su mensaje a las familias del mun-do en el Año de la Fe, “En la vida de una familia hay muchos momen-tos hermosos: el descanso, la comida juntos, la salida al parque o al campo, la visita a los abuelos, la visita a una persona enferma….Pero si falta el amor, falta la alegría, falta la fiesta y el amor nos lo da siempre Jesús: El es la fuente inagotable.

Al formar a nuestros hijos con amor y valores, significa que noso-tros mismos debemos aplicar esto en nuestra persona, nos obliga a ser congruentes con nuestras palabras y acciones. Hagamos de nuestros hijos e hijas, hombres y mujeres íntegros, ciudadanos de bien que apor-ten luz a un mundo cada vez más oscuro. Hoy 27 de Julio se celebra el día nacional de los padres (ambos padre y madre) y es un buen día para reconocer y agradecer a esos seres que han entregado y siguen dando lo mejor de sí a sus hijos.

Reflexiones para la homilía Cuando éramos niños y jugábamos, siempre queríamos que el mejor

jugador o el capitán del equipo más fuerte nos eligieran para jugar con él. Era un gran honor estar en un equipo, aunque fuera de niños. Y lo mismo sigue ocurriendo ya en la edad adulta: nos gusta que se nos considere, se nos elija, se nos seleccione para importantes tareas o cargos. Es un gran honor, que parece como si reconociera el valor en nosotros.

En la primera lectura de hoy, hay una pugna por parte de Adonia por ser elegido sucesor de David, es decir, rey, y por parte de los seguidores de Salomón, que quieren que David decida a su favor. Las pugnas, tanto en deportes como en asuntos políticos, son causa de competitividad y conflic-to muy a menudo. Hoy se nos habla de elecciones y decisiones muy distin-tas. No tienen mucho que ver con los merecimientos, ni las habilidades, ni con capacidades especiales, sino puramente con el amor de Dios.

Dios nos elige como hijos suyos, hermanos de Cristo y llamados a reproducir su imagen; es decir, somos hijos del más gran rey y herederos de su reino.

Entrar en el reino de Dios, se nos explica en el pasaje del Evangelio de hoy, más que un honor es una invitación y es una decisión a tomar. No es un honor por el que hay que esperar, en competición con otros muchos. No es un derecho adquirido por los muchos meritos o trabajos. Es, más bien, la invitación de una asombrosamente abundante misericordia de Dios que llama e invita a un tesoro extraordinario por el que merece la pena dejar todas las demás cosas, que en realidad, son totalmente pasajeras y carentes de valor. Entrar en el reino de Dios es, por un lado una predesti-nación por parte de Dios que nos llama, y un descubrimiento de la pro-fundísima riqueza y fascinante maravilla de la vida de Dios. Por ese reino de Dios, que supone para nosotros un honor inmenso y totalmente inmere-cido, merece la pena dejarlo todo atrás. Es mucho más importante estar en ese reino, que cualquier otro beneficio, honor, o posesión que podamos tener.

¿Qué significa haber encontrado el reino de Dios y decidirnos por él? Significa vivir con la dignidad de hijos de tan gran rey; es decir, proteger y respetar la dignidad de los demás y la propia. Cuando vemos intentos de discriminación, de abuso, de falta de respeto, tenemos que optar por el reino de Dios, ya que somos imagen de Cristo por la elección y designio de Dios.

Significa vivir en la justicia que Dios quiere para nosotros. Y eso pue-de querer decir luchar contra injusticias, trabajar por la mejora de situacio-nes, implicarse en la acción para que todos reciban lo que les corresponde, en derechos legales, educación, vivienda, trabajo, salud.

Significa vivir en la paz que es el amor de Dios. Reproducir esa ima-gen en nosotros significa hacer la paz en nuestras relaciones en la familia, en nuestras relaciones con los compañeros de trabajo, en nuestras comuni-dades. Trabajar por la unidad que va mucho más allá de los conflictos y las tensiones por el poder o por el honor, o incluso por el espacio dentro de una misma parroquia.

Vivir en el Reino de Dios y construir el Reino de Dios significa todo esto y significa, sobre todo, aceptar y recibir la salvación que nos viene por la Cruz y Resurrección de Cristo. Tal salvación supone liberación de nuestros pecados, nuestras faltas, las esclavitudes que a veces nos forja-mos a nosotros mismos por apegos a dinero, trabajo, cosas materiales, o el propio honor. Una liberación así da vida y la vida abundante es lo que ofrece ese Reino de Dios, el banquete eterno, gozoso y abundantísimo de su amor ilimitado.

Para la reflexión ¿En qué se parece mi vida de familia a la imagen del Reino de Dios, de paz, justicia y amor? ¿Me causa alegría el haber recibido la llamada de Dios a su Reino o tengo a menudo la impresión de que es una carga y una exigencia demasiado fuerte?

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Bartolomé de las Casas, el gran defensor de los

indígenas, nació en Sevilla, España en 1474 y falleció en Madrid en el año 1566. Su larga vida fue dedicada a la presencia española en América.

Bartolomé llegó a la Nueva España para encargarse de una Encomienda. Después fue ordenado sacerdote y recibió a cargo una encomienda de mineros amerindios. Poco a poco su corazón cristiano le abrió los ojos a las injusticias españolas en América.

Por eso se hizo fraile dominico e hizo varios viajes a España en defensa de los derechos humanos de los amerin-dios ante los reyes de España, los cuales le dieron tierras en Venezuela y Chiapas para poner en práctica su teoría humani-sta acerca de los indígenas.

Hasta el fin de su vida este fraile y teólogo dominico luchó por los derechos de los nativos americanos, buscando convencer a los reyes españoles y a los Papas que la con-quista no favorecía la evangelización de los pueblos.
