Wallsend Boys Club have opened the doors to the new community kitchen at their new

site on Rheydt Avenue.

Kier North Tyneside have turned a disused storage area into a Community Kitchen from which the youth

club will sell teas, coffees, biscuits and cakes on match days raising valuable funds for the many activities

that the Wallsend Boys club provide for the young people in local area.

The challenge carried out over a weekend has have provided new kitchen cupboards, new cooker, flooring,

paint, wall tiles and Kitchen equipment and volunteers from Kier North Tyneside and Wallsend Boys club

staff and parents worked side by side to provide skilled and unskilled labour to help successfully complete

the kitchen.

Mike Furze said “We are delighted with the outcome, everyone has enjoyed working with the volunteers

from the boys club and we are extremely pleased with the help from our local supply chain partners such as

Northumbrian Tiles, Tynemouth Decorators and All Floors who have all wanted to help make the

transformation. We had over 30 volunteers helping out with the challenge over the weekend and Greggs

provided food to keep all the helpers energised

Steve Dale Wallsend Boys club Chairman

said: “We are thrilled with the end result

and I’m very pleased that we now have a

kitchen on the site, the club would have

struggled to have provided these facilities

without the help of Kier. Everyone has

enjoyed the community spirit and working

hard over the weekend and on behalf of the

young people in our club I would like to

thank Kier North Tyneside for all their hard

work.”

Tenants in North Tyneside are set to benefit

from reduced electricity bills thanks to a

donation of 8,500 energy saving light bulbs

by Kier North Tyneside as part of an

initiative to promote energy efficiency

amongst the council’s 16000 residents.

Kier North Tyneside donated the bulbs while

carrying out repairs and maintenance works in

conjunction with the council’s better homes

department. The aim of the donation was to help

reduce tenants’ energy bills and offer tips on

leading an environmentally friendly lifestyle to

the residents of North Tyneside.

Energy saving light bulbs use up to 80 per cent

less electricity than a standard bulb but produce

the same amount of light. In turn, using less

electricity results in properties producing less

carbon dioxide which is one of the main causes of

climate change. According to research from the

Energy Savings Trust replacing all the bulbs in a

property could reduce household electricity bills

by £50 per year and up to £390 over the lifetime

of the bulbs.

Mike Furze, said: “Energy saving light bulbs are

an extremely inexpensive and easy way of

helping our residents to cut their energy bills

while at the same

time doing their bit

for the

environment. We

work closely with

communities to

promote

environmentally

friendly behaviours

and we hope that

by donating these

light bulbs we can

help promote

energy efficiency

among our

customers.”

In addition Kier

North Tyneside

donated 200 bulbs

to the Salvation

Army to be given

away to its service

users. The bulbs

were donated to

Kier North Tyneside

by the Monkseaton Rotary Club, one of 68 clubs

in the north east of England and part of a

worldwide service organisation of around 1.2

million people in more than 200 countries. The

club’s aim is to give service to those in need,

whether in local communities or abroad.

Club President, Jim Coulthard said, "my members

have been particularly impressed by the helpful

attitude of Kier's management and staff and I

hope that we can work together again, in future,

under our Environment Improvement Programme

with the distribution of free energy-saving

devices".
