  • Designated: First designated September 1973;extended November 1990 to include the southside of Crawford Place west of Brendon Street andthe north side of Crawford Place between thealmshouses and Watsons Mews.

    Historical Background: The streets were laid outand developed in the early 19th century as anarea of fourth rate terraced houses. The area hasremained largely intact with the exception of CatoStreet which was mostly redeveloped in the late19th and 20th centuries.

    Listed Buildings: 1a Cato Street; 41-3 and 46-53Harrowby Street; 6-9, 16-22, 23, 25-38 and 41-49Molyneux Street; 4-14 and 15-27 ShouldhamStreet.

    Key Features: There is a very high degree oftownscape uniformity, dominated by terraces ofnarrow fronted, stock brick early 19th centuryhouses, most of which are three storeys highabove a basement and remain in use as singlefamily dwellings. In many ways, the area forms adistinct island of a unique small scale, uniformand close-built character. There are five mid-19thcentury public houses which form importantfeatures in the townscape.

    Adjacent Conservation Areas: Partially boundedby the Portman Estate Conservation Area to thenorth and east.

    Strategic Views: Not affected.

    Areas of Special Archaeological Priority: Notaffected.

    Article 4 Directions: None.

    Regulation 7 Directions: The whole area isaffected by the requirement that any advertisementfor the sale or letting of land (including estate

    agents boards advertising shops, houses, flats oroffices) must be given consent by the City Councilas local planning authority. Displaying anadvertisement without having first obtainedconsent is a criminal offence.

    Planning Briefs and Design Guidelines: TheCity Council has published A Guide to RoofExtensions for the Molyneux Street ConservationArea which prohibits the erection of mansard roofson many houses in Shouldham Street, MolyneuxStreet and Brendon Street. Elsewhere, it givesdetails of the Councils preferred form of roofextension.
