wheat faDs into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit" (John 12,24). As long as people do not make any sacrifice; as long as they are devoted to pursuing only their individual satisfaction; as long as they sacrifice everything in the altar of their individual interest, then nothing will serve as a guarantee for the much desired good of life. Just as the Resurrection presupposes the Cross and the Burial, so does life, always and especially today, presuppose the sacrifice of human egoism and of individual interest.

Brethren and children in the Lord, life without love is false life and is in the end vanquished by death. Today people possess many material goods, but since greed and individual satisfaction is in abundance, the good of life runs the risk of being lost. To celebrate properly the Resurrection and to derive from it "the light of life" (John 8, 12), the hope and the faith in life, we must vanquish selfishness and "love one another earnestly" (1 Peter 1, 22). We must love one another, after "having forgiven all in the Resurrection': We must love all creatures of God and respect His Creation. We must share together all goods of the creation, just as we share the Bread and the Wine of the Holy Eucharist. Let us recover the spirit of sacrifice, which tends to vanish from our civilisation. Let us be clothed with love, for it alone gives true life. The Risen Lord, who was willingly crucified and loved us and His world unto death, guarantees the prevailing of life, true life, if we follow the way of sacrifice and of love that He pointed.

Brethren and beloved children,

By divine grace we shall undertake in a few months' time a new journey of love and unity, by visiting this time our beloved brethren and faithful children of Mother Church in America. We considered this journey necessary, in order to manifest and to declare our affection and patemal concern for the faithful children of Orthodoxy in the New World where, thanks to the endeavours of the canonically constituted shepherds, "the word of the Lord speeds on and is glorified" (2 Thess. 1, 1), and the Church 'grows with a growth that is from God" (Col. 2, 19). In that country, in which great progress of contemporary science and technology is accomplished, our Orthodox Church is called to transfer continually the. message of the Resurrection as the light of life, as the antipode of every message of individual satisfaction and of every idea that numbs or deadens life. Our mind now turns in love to the brethren and faithful in that great country, in a foretaste of the joy of our happy meeting in God.

We intend to convey in person this joyful message from the Mother Church also next September to the venerable Fathers who live in Mount Athos and thereafter to the monks of Meteora, who, as all monks do, day and night experience the joyful sorrow of the Cross, as a foretaste of the common resurrection in the last day.

Communicating these things in a Spirit of liturgical communion, brethren and children in the Lord, we embrace, in the joy and the peace of the Risen Lord, all the Most Reverend Leaders of the Holy Orthodox Churches throughout the world; and since this year we celebrate together the great feast, with the paschal greeting we greet in much love also the Leaders of the Christian Churches and Confessions, with whom we are in a dialogue of love and truth; and extending our paternal blessing to all pious

STYLIANOS By God's mercy Archbishop of Australia

To all the Clergy and the Faithful of our Holy Archdiocese

Concelebrant brothers and beloved children in the Lord,

"We celebrate the death of Death, the annihilation of Hell, the beginning of a life new and everlasting. And in joy we sing praises to the author thereof'

(Canon of Paschal.

/Jlj .Y using any words, other than the above, the ~ sacred hymnographer of our Church would not

be able to render with such precision and with such clarity the mysteries, which are "beyond reason and understanding'; spiritually celebrated on the feast of Pascha. These are words measured in the fear and the significance of the Last things: the death of Death brings the annihilation of Hell. And the two together now constitute the beginning of a new life, the eternal life, which is no longer interrupted by death, nor is it threatened by Hell.

HeU and Death were always the ultimate point of endurance for people, "the last cold'; as a contemporary writer states. But Hell and Death are not primarily what we feel for this impenetrable wall of our ignorance. What matters primarily is to learn what this dual darkness, Hell and Death, objectively represents. Confounded with the fright caused by these two evils we frequently not only confuse them, but sometimes we identify them. And yet, Hell and Death are not precisely the same thing.

First of all it should be said that the death about which the Gospel and the Church speak has no relationship whatsoever with what the world usually calls "death': For the world, death is the end of biological life. For the Gospel and the Church, on the contrary, death is the sin, namely the spiritual separation of people from God. The Apostle Paul explicitly gives us the equation: "For the wages of sin is death" (Rom. 6, 23).

The world, however, is not interested about the sin; it does not even speak about sin. People speak and are interested only about material damages, apparent "balances'; temporary ''assurances'' which they cannot see shaking. And when you teU people that these are altogether insignificant and secondary when compared to the eternal "connections" - precisely as the waves on the surface have no relation to the calm depths of the ocean - then they deride the invisible things and mock the spiritual values. Yet, it is this spiritual death that Christ vanquished with His death. Of course, since the pure body of Christ was immaculate and spotless, it was natural that it would not be subject to the decomposition of the biological death; hence it left the tomb entirely empty. The real victory, however, of the God·Man did not aim at the biology of the present world, but at the harmony of future life, namely at sefeguarding of eternal life,

which is the undisturbed communion with the only Lord of life and of death.

Parallel with the above is also the significance of HeU. If death is sin, which as a personal failure leads us away from the communion of God, HeU is the general state of darkness, and the kingdom of death includes all those whom "the gloomy and moonless desire of sin has devoured" as the hymn of Kassiani states.

[n other words, death was the horrible hand that seized each one of us, and HeU was the place of grief, where from time immemorial the "children of disobedience" ended up, in order to constitute the sad total of those "who sat in the darkness and the shadow of death'~ Yet the Resurrection of Christ mortified the hand of death and His descent in HeU annihilated and abolished the punishment of those who had died far from communion with God.

Such a general victory of God's love for people and for the world could not be expressed by the Church with any other image than that of abundant light: "now all has been filled with light, heaven and earth and the depths thereof~ Thus the Resurrection of the God-Man becomes the call of awakening that gathers together and incorporates in the light the Angels in heaven with those who struggle on earth and those who are sleeping in HeU.

Therefore the personal salvation of each one of us, and the general recapitulation in Christ, which are organicaUy interrelated, have been sealed once for all time with the sacrifice of the only Sinless One. And it is presicely this absolute sinlessness that inspires in us the certitude that "He who raised the Lord Jesus will also raise us through Jesus" (2 Cor. 4, 14).

To Him be the glory and the power forever. Amen.

Pascha, 1990 With fervent prayers to God in Christ Risen,

Archbishop STYUANOS

The element of joy constitutes the central point of the Christian Church - joy in the risen Lord, joy' in the reality of His presence in our. midst. Orthodox Christians express

this joy in the Paschal greeting to one another: "Christ is Risen", as well as in its response "Truly, He is Risen", especially in this festive period of the Feast of our Lord's Resurrection.

St. John of Damascus, the 8th Century Byzantine Church Father, expresses this jubilant spirit of the Easter joy in the hymns of the Canon, which he wrote, beginning with the following words:

"It is the day of the Resurrection, let us be filled with light, 0 people. Passover of the Lord, Passoverl For from death to life, and from earth to heaven, has Christ, our God, led us, who sing the song of victory'~

For centuries in the past, as well as in the present time, and indeed until the Lord comes again, this hymn will always proclaim the christian faith as a living faith in the risen, living Lord of all creation. It will proclaim our faith as the expression of our sharing in His resurrection and as the realisation of our life in the glory to come.

The very word Passover points to our potential passage Ufrom death to life and from earth to heaven'; in the words of the hymn mentioned above. For in the Person of the Risen Lord, the whole human race is already, at the present time, potentially risen from dead and is elevated to heaven. And it is not man alone who is redeemed and is filled with joy; with the joy of our resurrection, we rejoice over the redemption of the whole world. Therefore, the resurrection is an event of cosmic significance, a festal banquet of faith, in which the people of this world united with the heavenly beings, sing the song of .victory.

In the wonderful Paschal sermon of St. John Chrysostom, which is solemnly read in the Orthodox Churches on Easter night, all are invited to partake of the joy of the Resurrection:

"Enter ye all into the joy of our Lord, the first, and the last receive' their reward; rich and poor rejoice together... Let none sorrow over his sins, for forgiveness shines forth from the grave; Let none fear death, for the death of the Saviour has redeemed us ... Christ is risen and the demons are fallen. Christ is risen and the angels rejoice. Christ is risen and life lives.., To Him be honour and dominion for ever and ever!"

With this great force of a living faith in the risen Lord, we already live in eternal life, where the boundaries between life and death are non existent. The great message of Easter is that life exists beyond the grave:

((Christ is risen from the dead, Trampling down death by death, Bestowing life to those in the gravel"

The Resurrection of Christ is the consummation of our salvation, the beginning of eternal life. Under the light of the Resurrection, we face the hardships and suffering of life with the hope and courage that God's truth will ultimately trimph.

"It is the day of the Resurrection, Let us be filled with light, and let us embrace one another. .. 1}

Let us become partakers in the inexpressible joy of the Resurrection, since death has no longer any power over Christ, our Lord. (Rom. 6, 10).

Address On the Occasion of the Thanksgiving Service for the First Graduates of St. Andrew's

Theological CoUege (17.3.90)

"Holy Father. .. sanctify them in your truth; your word is truth'{John 17 : 17).

07 hese words, dear brethren, addressed by the Lord upon J leaving this world to His Father in heaven, for the sake of His disciples left behind in the world, we also borrow

today in order to see off, in thanksgiving, the first graduates of our Theological College into the world, confessing as we do, through such reference, that we too have at our disposal no other strength and no other treasure than the world of Revelation that is "sharper than any two·edged sword" (Heb. 4 : 12).

Deemed worthy four years ago to establish with the grace of God this the first in the southern Hemisphere Orthodox Theological School of SI. Andrew, surely we could aspire to nothing else than to serve, for our sake and for that of each other, the word of reconciliation and godly wisdom which not only enlightens man through Faith, as "the evidence of things not seen" (Heb. 11 : 1), but even reconciles him, firstly with God and then with his fellow-man, as well as with his very conscience, if perchance it be uneasy and perturbed.

If, according to a successful observation, the mission of poetry in the world is "to preserve vivid at every time the prick of conscience~ then the mission of Theology is surely to preserve unquenched the memory of love and charity of God in the world, no matter how much the world does not cease to "lie in wickedness" (I John 5 : 19).

The first graduates of our Theological CoDege that today are being dedicated with the blessings of God, five in number, were blessed to know and to experience the presence of God already from childhood, in the homes of their pious parents.

Therefore, their subsequent study and education was not a kind of conversion from the state of Saul to that of Paul -as unfortunately is the case today with most students of other Theological Colleges, since they come from entirely secularised family environment - but a journey prearranged by the grace of God from their home, since these chosen young men of our Community were truly foreordained I<from the wombs of their mother" for God's field and the Lord's vineyard.

On this solemn day and occasion, we are truly justified -always bearing pride in the Lord - in confessing that, among our people in Australia, there is fortunately still preserved undimmed the fear of God and the sensitivity for matters that concern our traditional piety in general. This renders not only the study of Theology something desirable, but also the entry to the Priesthood a venerable and enviable feat. And irrefutable evidence for this is the fact that three of our first graduates are already ordained, while the other two are appropriately preparing towards this.

However, the degree to which the religious sense and the stable devotion to matters of our Church and Nation are still highly preserved among cur people here. is further attested to by the very fact that our Theological College was able to function thanks

by Archbishop StyJianos of Australia, Dean

on the one hand to the generous donations of the two Great Benefactors, namely the families of Sir Arthur T. George and the late Michael T. Paspaiis, as well as the smaller contributions of known and unknown people from the multitude of faithful, and on the other hand thanks to the willingness of those teaching to offer with me their services gratis. at least until the College acquires the means of responding to expenses of sa1ary. this at any rate is also the purpose of the known Crusade of the Friends of the College. Nonetheless, that the College - which presupposes so many other expenses - was in a position to function without the least of funds from the Greek or Australian Governments. surely constitutes a miracle of faith, hope and love of our people who have in any case created out of nothing numerous other projects of common benefit.

For all these reasons we may once more assure the honest supporters of the overall work of our Archdiocese that with the Theological College too "we have not run in vain" (Phil. 2 : 16), but we have, with the grace of God, moved to bright horizons, from which. behold today. five new stars davm, not only shining but also burning to illuminate and warm those to whom they will be sent!

Go then, dear friends, and preach the Gospel to the whole of creation, and the God of peace and mercies will surely not cease to overshadow your sacred course and career in the world for the glory of His holy Name and the salvation of His people and all the world. Amen.

PRAYER o Lord our God, the indescribable Logos of God the

Father, the preeternal wisdom and power of God, who came into the world for the illumination and the salvation of those who call upon Your holy Name; who called together Your holy Disciples and Apostles with a holy calling and promised the ki ngdom of heaven, sending them to teach and to baptise the nations; come, 0 Master, also in our midst at this hour and send down Your Holy Spirit upon these Your servants to dedicate them as servants and teachers of Your truth.

You, 0 Lord, know the humility of us all; for, with contrite heart, in our desire to be illumined by the light of Your countenance, we prayed day and night for the grace of the Conforter.

Extend therefore, 0 superessential Trinity, Your mercy also upon these Your servants who know You, so that they may, in gratitude and thanksgiving , proclaim Your might not only to the faithful but also to those who lie in darkness and the shadow of death.

And keep in Your holiness all of us, who attend to the sacred studies, through the intercessions of the holy Father and Teachers, so that we may rightly teach the word of Your truth.

For to You is due all glory, honour and worship, to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and always, and to the ages of ages. AMEN.

(S.S.H.)

SYDNEY - The Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Churches of Australia organised the annual pan·Orthodox Paschal Liturgy on Saturday, 21 st Apri l 1990 at the Cathedral Church of the Annunciation, Redfern. At the Divine Liturgy His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos concelebrated with His Grace Bishop Longin of the Serbian Orthodox Church and was assisted by other Orthodox clergy of the area. After the Liturgy, refreshments were offered for all by the ladies of the Phi loptochos at the Cathedral Hall.

SYDNEY - The ABC on Palm Sunday (April 8) screened a 90 minute "documentary" The Riddle of the Dead Sea Scrolls which was filmed in the Middle East and Europe. This program was based upon Dr. B. Thiering's hypotheses concerning the Qumran documents and the life of Jesus. Dr. Thiering's conclusions concerning the Dead Sea Scrolls and their ramifications concerning the New Testament account of Jesus, are in complete opposition to worldwide scholarly opinion. Unfortunately, other scholarly viewpoints were only briefly dealt the except for some contributions from callers by telephone in the radio program that followed the presentation. Surely this cannot be called democratic freedom but an improper use of the mass media, which are maintained by tax payers. A panel of discussion on the subject was presented on April 20, from the same Television station with widely representative christian views.

SINAI - The Egyptian Government has announced plans for a proposed tourist complex near the ancient Greek Orthodox Monastery of St.Catherine's, at Sinai (built in 6th century A.D.) If the project plans are instituted this would result in some very serious repercussions both for the life of the monastery as well as for the spiritual tone of the present pilgrimages. The plans propose the construction, at a site a few miles from the monastery, of 500 villas, a tourist-village with 250 rooms, two hotels with 400 rooms, shopping centre, school and hospital. Furthermore the present climb from the monastery to the summit of Mt Sinai/Horeb, where Moses received the Decalogue from God, will be supplemented by a cable car system with a restaurant and a casino at the upper terminus. Such plans are purely financially-motivated and constitute a direct attack upon the sheer sanctity of this holy region, replete with biblical and patristiC tradition (indeed the site is also venerated by Jews and Muslims) .
