When God Won’t Give the Nod

But sometimes, they are!

What if God says “No” to our dreams?

We ask “Why didn’t God answer my prayer?”

We mean “Why didn’t God give me what I wanted?”

God answers every prayer “No” is an

what you want can be a blessing

One day we’ll understand the “No’s” and thank God for them

We can learn as much from God’s denials as from his permissions

2 Samuel 7:1-3 NIV After the king was settled in his

palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him, (2) he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent." (3) Nathan replied to the king, "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you."

David’s Dream

He approaches Nathan, who responds “Go ahead”

No preacher will turn down a building program when someone else is raising the money!

Preachers can be wrong!

2 Samuel 7:4-7 NIV That night the word of the LORD came to Nathan,

saying: (5) "Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in? (6) I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. (7) Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?"'

In 2 Sam 6, David’s good idea went wrong

God’s prohibition explained in 1 Chronicles 22:6-10 NIV

Then he called for his son Solomon and charged him to build a house for the LORD, the God of Israel. (7) David said to Solomon: "My son, I had it in my heart to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God. (8) But this word of the LORD came to me: 'You have shed much blood and have fought many wars. You are not to build a house for my Name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight.

David was an old man

(6) … the Arameans became subject to him and brought tribute. The LORD gave David victory wherever he went. …

2 Samuel 8:1-18 NIV

… (13) And David became famous after he returned from striking down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. (14) He put garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites became subject to David. The LORD gave David victory wherever he went. (15) David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people. …

David said “I want to build God a house.”

God said, “No, I’m going to build your house.”

When God says “No” he doesn’t write you off

He promised David a son

God promised David an eternal kingdom The Messiah’s

kingdom was established by the Son of David

From David came a temple not built with hands – one that will last till the world ends

Nathan was nervous to tell David “No.”

It’s hard to say “No” to success

David was good at anything

Especially tough since God hasn’t told David why

David’s prayer

2 Samuel 7:18-29 NIV

Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: "Who am I, O Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? (19) And as if this were not enough in your sight, O Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign LORD?

(20) "What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Sovereign LORD. (21) For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant. (22) "How great you are, O Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.

(23) And who is like your people Israel--the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? (25) "And now, LORD God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, (26) so that your name will be great forever. Then men will say, 'The LORD Almighty is God over Israel!' And the house of your servant David will be established before you. (27) "O LORD Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, 'I will build a house for you.'

2 Samuel 7:18-29 NIV

So your servant has found courage to offer you this prayer. (28) O Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your words are trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. (29) Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, O Sovereign LORD, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever."

David counted his blessings and praised God

Wouldn’t let one “No” make him lose sight of all the “Yes” answers God has given him.

He accepted the “No” and didn’t complain. Rather, he cooperated with God.

David’s preparation

1 Chronicles 22:1-5 NIV

Then David said, "The house of the LORD God is to be here, and also the altar of burnt offering for Israel." (2) So David gave orders to assemble the aliens living in Israel, and from among them he appointed stonecutters to prepare dressed stone for building the house of God. (3) He provided a large amount of iron to make nails for the doors of the gateways and for the fittings, and more bronze than could be weighed.

1 Chronicles 22:1-5 NIV

(4) He also provided more cedar logs than could be counted, for the Sidonians and Tyrians had brought large numbers of them to David. (5) David said, "My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the LORD should be of great magnificence and fame and splendor in the sight of all the nations. Therefore I will make preparations for it." So David made extensive preparations before his death.

Three principles for Dealing with “No’s”

God’s majesty should be reflected David called God “Sovereign”

gives goodies when we ask

Our hypocrisy:

When we get a “No” we don’t understand, we are hesitant to praise him

Yet, when he gives “Yes” answers, we don’t hesitate to enjoy them

God’s mysteries should be respected Respect the silence of God and

the plan of God Cooperate with God’s plan even

when you don’t recognize it We can learn as much from

denials as from permissions

God’s ministries should not be neglected When you get a “No” are you

going to sulk or seek? We’re good at saying what we’d

do if … (rich, promotion, etc.) If more money, more generous.

What about now? If promotion, more influence.

What about influence now?

Jesus saw wealthy give

But he honored the woman who gave two small coins

If God can’t trust us with little, why should he trust us with much?
