RESOLUTION CALLINGSPECIAL REFERENDUM

TO INCREASE THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE

UNION COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

WHEREAS, the Union CountyGovernance Committee (the“Governance Committee”) hasspent a significant amount oftime over the last year review-ing the composition of the Un-ion County Board of Commis-sioners (the “Board”) in orderto make a recommendation asto whether any changes in theBoard!s composition should bemade; andWHEREAS, as a result of thisreview the Governance Com-mittee made a recommenda-tion to the Board at its June21, 2010, meeting that thenumber of County Commis-sioners should be increasedfrom five (5) to seven (7) mem-bers and that all seven mem-bers should be elected “atlarge” by all residents of theCounty; andWHEREAS, the Board desiresthat the issue of increasing thenumber of County Commis-sioners from five to seven beplaced on the ballot as a spe-cial referendum to be voted onby the citizens of the County;andWHEREAS, in placing the is-sue of altering the compositionof the Board the Board mustcomply with N.C. Gen. Stat.§ 153A-60.NOW, THEREFORE BE ITRESOLVED BY THE UNIONCOUNTY BOARD OF COM-MISSIONERS that:1. A special referendum becalled on the adoption of thealteration to the structure ofthe Board and the following is-sue be placed on the ballot atthe general election to be heldon November 2, 2010 as fol-lows:“Shall the structure of theboard of commissioners be al-tered to increase the numberof commissioners from five (5)to seven (7)?_____ YES _____ NO”2.
