Over the past five years, San Mateo County has paid Santa Clara County for the use of two specialized jail beds at a cost of at least $1,200 each per day — almost half a million dollars each per year.
On Tuesday, San Mateo County supervisors will con-sider approving a $2 million contract extension with Santa Clara County to keep using the beds two more years.
The contract guarantees San Mateo County two acute
inpatient mental health beds in the Santa Clara County jail through June 2011 for inmates who are “gravely disabled” and may be refusing to eat, take medication or bathe, said San Mateo County Health System spokeswoman Beverly Thames.
Those inmates require individual cells, licensed nurses and psychiatric staff. Included in the costs are hearings in which a judge can order forced medication, she said.
In the first year of the contract, which begins July 1, the beds will each cost $1,350 per day, or $492,750 per year. In the contract’s second year, a 5 percent increase raises the cost to $1,418 per bed per day, or $517,570 each for the contract year ending June 30, 2011.
The cost of the beds has climbed gradually since mid-2004, when Santa Clara County sharply raised its rates from $166 per day to about $1,200 per day, according to a
