BEACH - The city com-mission is back in fullswing from the sum-mer break and movingforward on many proj-ects. The NE drainage proj-
ect is moving onschedule. I received amessage inquiringabout all the blockstructures that weredelivered in the areaand what they are for. They are the connec-tors for the pipe sys-tem. There is also workbeing performed on theforce main that con-nects to Hollywood on14th Avenue. We allknow how difficult ithas been for the resi-dents particularly 14thAvenue so staff contin-ues to monitor the site. There is limited area tostage the workthroughout the neigh-borhood so we ask res-idents to be patient. We continue to work
with the contractor tomake sure the worksites are kept as cleanas possible. We alsohave been doing ourbest to monitor trafficflows. The city is also in the
process of improvingsome of our bus stopsto make sure they arehandicap accessible. These measures are re-quired by BrowardCounty Transit to in-sure all residents haveaccess to our publictransportation system.Next month, we will be
moving forward on astrategic plan for allour bus shelters. For years we have
been trying to workwith BCT and manyproperty owners to se-cure right of ways forshelters. Some prop-erty owners have beenvery cooperative likethe Prince George andHemispheres, whohave partnered with thecity. Acquiring otherareas through the cityhas proven to be morechallenging and hasstalled installation ofneeded shelters to pro-tect riders from the ele-ments.The city manager and
city attorney have re-searched the best wayto proceed in acquiringspace. Florida law al-lows eminent domainfor government infra-structure. While wecould go that route, thebetter method is work-ing with the propertyowners under a quicktake. This provides thepayment for the prop-erty to be exempt fromtaxes. It also avoidsdrawn out battles thatonly cost everyonemoney. Staff will bebringing forward a fullplan next month. The A1A project is
also moving ahead onschedule. I have re-ceived many callsabout the traffic. Ourstaff and police depart-ment have been work-ing diligently to movetraffic as quickly aspossible through the
area. Delays are in-evitable with all roadconstruction projects. This circumstance iscompounded sincemultiple lanes must beclosed and merged. This project also hasstaging issues sincethere is limited right ofways. This phase of theconstruction is to re-place old undergroundpipes. This will savehaving to dig up theroad for any breaksafter the RRR project iscomplete. The RRR project is
the full resurfacing ofthe road way, the in-stallation of new ofsidewalks, decorativelighting, crosswalk andother safety improve-ments. The project wasoriginally scheduled forcompletion in spring. The city has decidedno work will be per-formed between No-vember and April dueto season. The secondphase will be com-pleted in summer of2014.The Joe Scavo and
BF James Park im-provements are movingforward. We are look-ing forward to the firstmonthly report on allactivities including howmany jobs and howmany local contractorshave been used todate. Last week we held a
“Chalkboard” event atSunrise Park. Theturnout was wonderful!Chalk boards are nowin place for residents to
comment on what theywould like to see builtin the park. The boardswill remain in place fora 30 day period. Thecomments and sugges-tions will be compliedand presented in apublic workshop for re-view. The city continues to
work with the countyand the state on beachnourishment. We haveyet to resolve the moni-toring issues, but wehave joined forces toapply for a Local Gov-ernment Funding Re-quest LGFR from FLDEP for $4.5 milliondollar Florida BeachManagement grant. The city commissionauthorized the grantapplication with a com-mitment of matchingfunds of $2.3 milliondollars. This grant goesthrough a state rankingprocess so we will beworking closely withour state legislators. The city commission
will still need to ad-dress a long term fund-ing mechanism to fundnot just this project butto plan for future proj-ects over the life of the10 year existing permit.
GREEN TIP:Over the next months
before our next elec-tion in 2014, residentswill be asked to signmany petitions for con-stitutional amend-ments. There is one todate that I brought for-ward for the commis-sion to support byresolution. For manyyears Florida has beenfocused on EvergladesRestoration. This vitalnational treasure needsto be protected. Notonly is the Everglades anatural asset, it ishome to amazing floraand fauna and mostimportantly major pro-tection for our watersupply. The amend-ment will insure fund-ing continues.
A broad base of envi-ronmental groups andcitizens have estab-lished The FloridaWater and Land LegacyCoalition to promoteThe Florida Water andLand Amendment. Theamendment provides adesignated fundingsource from 33% of allexcise tax collectedfrom documents.Funds will be placed ina trust and only allo-cated for water andland conservation proj-ects. The amendmentwill not create any newtaxes. For more infor-mation go towww.FloridaWater-LandLegacy.org.

HOLLYWOOD - Youhave put off gettingdental implants forlong enough. The pricehas always been toohigh - or you just donot know enoughabout them to makethat life-changing deci-sion.What ever barriers
there were in the pastare now put to rest asDr. Richard Silver andhis associates at EliteDental Practice in Hol-lywood offer a way tomake you look and feelbetter. With a FREE implant
consultation, Dr. Silvercan now help youmake those changes -for as little as $999(regular $1,500) andcrowns for as little as$799."The one thing that
we find out in dentistrythese days is that pa-tients are never ex-plained the manyoptions they have," Dr.Silver and his associ-ates point out. "Whenyou come in and talkwith us, you leavemore informed andready to make thatnext step."While many dentists
continue to offer im-plants, actually sittingdown and explainingall facets of the proce-dure, is not somethingthat is routine. Dr. Sil-ver and his associateshave spent a career on
making sure that theirpatients understandeverything.
DENTAL IMPLANTS A dental implant is a
prosthetic replacementfor a missing tooth.Natural teeth consist ofthe crown and the root. The crown is the visiblesection that is coveredwith white enamel.Supporting the crownis the tooth root whichextends into the jaw-bone. The root is thepart of the tooth that iseffectively replaced byan implant. There are commonly
three parts to what isdescribed as an im-plant - the implant de-vice itself (which isinserted directly intothe bone); the abut-ment - the piece thatconnects the implantdevice to the third part- the overlying crownor denture.Today's implants are
predominantly made oftitanium, a metal that isbio-compatible and of-fers strength and dura-bility as well as aunique property of fus-ing directly to bone -the process known asosseointegration.Other materials, suchas zirconium, might beused to make implantsin the future. But fornow, these materialshave not been per-fected for general use.
DENTAL IMPLANTSVS. CONVENTIONAL DENTURESImplants can be used
to replace one missingtooth so that the re-placement looks andfeels natural. Also, twoor more implants canserve as a stable sup-port for the replace-ment of many teeth. Many patients who
have selected dentalimplants describe aquality of life that ismuch more comfort-able and secure thanthe lifestyle endured bythose with fixedbridges or removabledentures. Denturesoften make a personfeel and look olderthan they are, causeembarrassment in so-cial situations whenthey slip and click, andrestrict the everydaypleasure of eatingcomfortably. When they count thebenefits they enjoy asa result of their dentalimplants, patients saytheir implants eliminatethe day-to-day frustra-tions and discomfort ofill-fitting dentures. They allow people toenjoy a healthy andvaried diet without therestrictions many den-ture wearers face. Witha sense of renewedself-confidence, manypeople rediscover theexcitement of an activelifestyle shared withfamily and friends andthe chance to speakclearly and comfort-ably with co-workers.For all these reasons, people with dental im-plants often say theyfeel better... they lookbetter... they live better.
AM I A CANDIDATEFOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?Generally speaking, if
you have lost teeth youare a candidate fordental implants. It isimportant that you arein good health, how-ever, as there are someconditions and dis-eases that can affectwhether dental im-plants are right for you.For example, uncon-trolled diabetes, can-cer, radiation to thejaws, smoking, alco-holism, or uncontrolledperiodontal (gum) dis-ease may affectwhether dental im-plants will fuse to yourbone. It is important tolet your dental surgeonknow all about yourmedical status (pastand present) togetherwith all medicationsyou are taking, whether prescribed, al-ternative (herbal) orover-the-counter.Where and how im-
plants are placed re-quires a detailedassessment of youroverall stomato-gnathic system
(“stoma” – mouth;“gnathic” – jaws),within which the teethfunction. This will ne-cessitate compilingrecords that includestudy models of yourmouth and bite, andspecialized radi-ographs (x-rays), whichmay include 3D scansknown as computer-ized tomograms (CTscans). Planning withthe help of computerimaging ensures thatdental implants can beplaced in exactly theright position in thebone.
HOW DO IMPLANTSDIFFER FROMTEETH?Natural teeth and
dental implants maylook the same, feel thesame, and even func-tion in a similar way,but they are very differ-ent. The most impor-tant differences are inthe way they attach tothe surrounding bone, their response to den-tal disease, their main-tenance, and repair.Teeth attach to the
surrounding bone by aperiodontal ligament(“peri” – around; “dont”– tooth) made up ofcollagen fibers thatjoin into the tooth onone side and bone onthe other. Dental im-plants fuse directly tothe bone. The gum tissues also
attach to the root of atooth with collagenfibers as describedabove. However, gumtissues can only stickto the surface of dentalimplants.
Teeth are susceptibleto dental decay as wellas the need for rootcanal therapy; dentalimplants are metal anddo not decay or needroot canal. Teeth mayalso be susceptible toperiodontal (gum) dis-ease, while dental im-plants may besusceptible to peri-im-plantitis, an inflamma-
tory response to bacte-rial biofilm of the tis-sues surrounding theimplant, which can re-sult in disintegration ofthe bone to the im-plant.All major insurance
plans and credit cardsare accepted. If youdon’t have dental in-surance, no problem, they will work out apayment plan with you.Walk-Ins are Wel-
come!Languages spoken:

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS"After searching for a caring, compassion-
ate, conscientious, and competent dentist, Ifinally found Elite Dental Center. Not only hasDr. Richard Silver continually provided state-of-the-art treatment but he respondspromptly to emergency situations withphone calls, as well as with follow-up ap-pointments. Dr. Silver is unique among den-tists. He really cares about his patients, taking time to fully explain all the treatmentprocedures that are to be performed in aneasily understandable way. If all dentistswere like Dr. Silver there would be no dentalphobia in America and appreciably less visitsto the dentist," says Hugh B.
"Dr. Silver is just great. A friend recom-mended him to me, and it took only one ap-pointment for me to switch to him from myold dentist. He did an outstanding job fillinga cavity my old dentist had done a terriblejob on. And he did what's certainly the bestcleaning job I've had in years. In all, he's ex-tremely thorough, meticulous, careful, andknowledgeable. On top of that, he's a supernice guy -- funny and easy going (yet veryprofessional). The staff is just as nice andhelpful. I highly recommend him,” saysRaul S.
"Dr. Silver is efficient and runs on time. I re-ally appreciate that of him. I don't have towait a long time to get an appointment ei-ther. His staff is courteous and Dr. Silvercares about patients and dentistry," saysPatricia D.

(StatePoint) Havingtrouble sticking toyour diet? When yourbody doesn’t respondto your efforts the wayyou expect, it’s easy tolose the motivation tocontinue.“Most dieters are
using outdated or inef-ficient methods toreach their goals,”says Dian Griesel,Ph.D., co-author of“TurboCharged: Accel-erate Your Fat BurningMetabolism, Get LeanFast and Leave Dietand Exercise Rules inthe Dust.”Dian Griesel, and
co-author Tom Grieselare attempting to de-bunk the myths manypeople believe aboutweight loss.“Many dieters see
slow results due tobad practices rootedin misguided belief,”says Tom Griesel. “Butif you get the basicsright, rapid fat loss isnot difficult to achieveand you will see yourbody transform muchmore quickly.”If you are not satis-
fied with your results, the writing duo is of-fering five suggestionsfor why you may notbe losing fat fastenough:
• Wrong goal: If yourgoal is an arbitrarynumber based on yourscale, you are alreadysetting yourself up tofail.Scale weight
doesn’t tell you any-thing about your ac-tual body composition-- how much fat youhave and how muchyou’re losing. Yourscale weight couldfluctuate for severalreasons, such as hy-dration level, waterweight or muscle loss.Setting the right
goal and monitoringchanges in your bodycomposition is the firstkey to success.
• Water retention:Proper hydration iscritical to fat loss andoverall health. How-ever, too little or toomuch water can causeproblems. Water in-take requirements areinfluenced by severalfactors, like weightand activity levels. Agood starting point isto consume 1/2 ounceof water per pound ofcurrent body weight.Drink at least 16ounces first thing inthe morning -- purewater is best -- andmore if you are thirsty.
• Too much exercise:Excessive exercisecreates stress and canbe counterproductivewhen you’re restrictingcalories, causing lossof muscle mass.Low-intensity activi-
ties like walking --along with minimalstrength training to re-tain muscle mass -- isall that’s needed.
• Too much of thewrong thing: Diet isthe most efficient wayto create a caloric re-striction, maintainblood sugar levels, which are conduciveto fat loss, and provideall the nutrients youneed for optimalhealth. If you’re notseeing positivechanges in body com-position, the problemis almost always yourdiet.
• Stress and lack ofsleep: Chronic stresscan have an adverseeffect on hormonalbalance, which canhinder fat loss andcause loss of essentiallean body mass.
Stress and lack ofsleep disrupt manydelicate physiologicalfunctions. Regularlypracticing somemethod of relaxationand getting seven tonine hours of sleepevery night will make abig difference in yourfat loss efforts.
More information aboutsmart dieting habits andoptimal health can befound at www.Tur-boCharged.us.com. Don’tditch your diet beforeseeing the results youwant. By workingsmarter, not harder, youcan achieve your goalsbefore losing motivation.

New Health Findings Can HelpCombat Common Ailments
(StatePoint) From high blood pressure tocancer, serious ailments often strike, despiteour best efforts to maintain good health. With the rapid pace of medical advance-
ments and treatment options emerging, con-ventional medical wisdom can sometimes lagbehind innovations in disease management.Furthermore, there’s often little attention paidto nutrition’s role in health conditions.“Our healthcare system is a disease model, not a prevention model, and reimbursementis based upon sickness, not wellness. Weneed to better integrate all facets of care,”says Dr. Steven V. Joyal, chief medical officerwith Life Extension, Inc., an organization ded-icated to increasing the functional humanlifespan. It’s this thinking that spurred the creation of
Life Extension’s 2014 edition of the DiseasePrevention and Treatment Book, which seeksto fill those gaps. From cancer to multiplesclerosis, the book offers 1400 pages of in-formation on integrating pharmaceuticaltreatment options, nutritional support andlifestyle changes for optimal health. For ex-ample:
HIGH BLOOD PRESSUREA major risk factor for heart disease,
stroke, congestive heart failure and kidneydisease, high blood pressure threatens thelife of every third American adult.Intensive lifestyle changes can ease blood
pressure management. When this isn’tenough, pharmaceutical options can help. For example, blood pressure is best con-trolled with lower doses of multiple antihy-pertensive medications rather than a singlelarge dose of medication. Furthermore, sideeffects can be greatly reduced.“Many patients are lulled into a false senseof security by normal blood pressure read-ings at their periodic doctor’s visits. But quitefrequently, patients experience gaps in con-trol, putting them at risk for stroke and heartattack,” says Joyal.
JOYAL RECOMMENDS CONSIDERING THEFOLLOWING:• With an inexpensive at-home blood pres-sure monitor, take readings at multiple timesthroughout the day, tracking values overtime. Your doctor can determine whether tomodify your treatment regimen based uponthe results.• Stay fit and exercise. A healthy body weightand high degree of cardiorespiratory fitnessreduce hypertension risk, and if you alreadyhave high blood pressure, can help youachieve better control.• Hold the salt. High sodium intake can makehigh blood pressure worse. Read labels. Evenif you aren’t reaching for salt, many pre-pack-aged convenience foods, meats and cheesescontain significant amounts of sodium.• Get plenty of beneficial nutrients, especiallypotassium and magnesium, which are impor-tant for vascular health.
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITISRheumatoid arthritis could pose more than
just a risk to comfort. Systemic inflammationhastens the onset of other age-related dis-eases, including cardiovascular disease.“For optimal longevity, we need to integrate
lifestyle changes with pharmaceutical treat-ments, rather than blindly assume that all apatient needs is more medication,” saysJoyal. In addition to doctor-prescribed treatments,
Life Extension researchers have scouredmedical literature, finding several nutrientshelp support health in rheumatoid arthritispatients:
• Fish oil • Krill oil blend • Gamma linolenicacid • Vitamin D • Vitamin B6 • Green tea ex-tract • Quercetin • Folate
More information about integrating lifestylechanges into treatment plans for various medicalchallenges can be found atwww.LifeExtension.com/dpt.
