MEET THE TEAM

Andy Sythe’s tenure as head coach at Long Beach State has been characterized by

individual and team success and scholar-athlete achievement in track and field, as

well as cross country.

Selected 2006 Coach-of-the-Year for Big West Men's Track & Field, Sythe is now in

his 20th year at the helm of cross country, and indoor/outdoor track & field at “The

Beach,” Sythe has developed a combined program that is among the best in the Big

West Conference as well as the regional and national level.

In 2005-06 the Men's Track & Field team won the Big West Championship and fin-

ished 16th at the NCAA's, their highest team finish since 1998 when they finished

17th. Since the inception of NCAA Track & Field Regional qualifying (four) years

ago, Long Beach has sent 102 qualifiers to the NCAA Championships. In 2005 and

2006, Sythe sent more qualifiers to the NCAA regional championships than any

other men’s program in the Big West Conference. While under Sythe’s direction the

university track & field programs have been ranked among the top 20 percent of

320+ NCAA Division-I schools, annually. In Cross Country the Men's & Women's

teams finished 10th respectively at the NCAA West Regional, the highest combined

team finish in two decades. In 2005 and 2006 the cross country team had the best

combined finished over any two-year run in school-history. In 1990, under Sythe,

the women’s Cross Country squad finished second in the conference, the best fin-

ish in school history, until last year when the team equaled that mark. Individually,

13 49er student-athletes have garnered All-Big West Conference Cross Country

honors, six of those coming in the last three seasons.

"The mission of our program is to challenge for and ultimately win conference cham-

pionships and we are equally driven to continue our improvement at the national and

regional level in both cross country and track & field," said Sythe. "I believe that

shifting more resources to the distance program has helped us achieve that goal."

Since Sythe’s arrival the record books have been rewritten at the university.

Currently, 36 indoor and 25 outdoor school records are by Sythe-coached athletes

in cross country and track and field. Considering the rich tradition in track & field at

Long Beach State, these numbers are staggering.

Strong academic performance has been a common theme in Sythe’s career as a

coach and athlete. Sythe was an outstanding student-athlete at San Diego State

where he graduated in 1987 with honors and a BS in Physical Education. As a

coach, no fewer than 103 of his student-athletes have achieved perfect 4.0 semes-

ter grade point averages. Through his guidance, 228 athletes have been named

Academic All conference. Nationally, he has produced 21 National All-Academic

teams in Cross Country and Track & Field, many of which were distinguished for

their high gpa. Individually, Sythe has helped guide athletes to attain the highest

level of individual academic achievement by having seven athletes recognized as

Co-SIDA Academic All-Americans, two Phi Beta Kappas and one Rhodes Scholar.

In 2006, Sythe had 26 current and former student-athletes receive diplomas.

Sythe, 44, was hired in Fall 1989 as the Head Coach at Long Beach State. At age

23, he was the youngest NCAA Division 1 coach in the United States. Sythe has had

the very best mentors in the sport throughout his high school and college career. As

an athlete under Dixon Farmer at San Diego State (1984-87) Sythe captained his

team that ranked among the top 10 nationally. As an assistant for Ralph Lindeman

at Long Beach State (1988-89) Sythe furthered his skills under the tutelage of anoth-

er of the nations most respected coaches. In 1989, his mentor Lindeman was select-

ed Big West Conference Coach-of-the-Year. Both Farmer and Lindeman since have

served on Olympic Staffs for the United States Olympic team.

Track & Field and Cross Country are a passion for Sythe, and his dedication to the

sport is reflected by his involvement beyond the scope of the university. Sythe has

served on national committees with USA Track & Field and the US Track Coaches

Association. He has served on the Executive Committee for Men’s Development

with USATF, been Co-meet Director for the 1999 USATF Senior Cross Country

National Championships, and recently completed over 10 years of service as Men’s

Track & Field Chair and board member for the Southern California Association of

USA Track & Field. Sythe recently completed 4 years of service with the Executive

Committee and Rules Committee for the USTFCCCA. Sythe has also coached at

clinics throughout the U.S. and worked with the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los

Angeles in its coaching instructional program. Recognized for his success and his

dedicated work on the national level, Sythe was selected by his peers to be the

Head Coach for the men’s West team in the 1995 United States Olympic Festival,

held in Colorado Springs, CO. Before that, he was an assistant coach for the team

champion West team at the 1993 Olympic Festival in San Antonio, TX.

A native of Los Gatos, California, Sythe and his wife Maribeth reside in Long Beach.

They have two daughters, Sierra and Callie.

" He is committed to placing thewell being of our student-athletes and their collegiate running experiencehigh on his list of priorities. Coach Cunniff inherits a motivated group ofathletes that lost several of its top runners to graduation in 2007. Underhis guidance we will be capable, once again, of making our presenceknown at the regional and national level. "

BIG WEST CONFERENCE

14 L O N G B E A C H S T A T E C R O S S C O U N T R Y

The Big West Conference enters the 2008-09season in its 40th year of operation. There are18 conference-sponsored sports in the BigWest. Women's sports are comprised of soc-cer, volleyball, cross country, swimming anddiving, basketball, golf, tennis, softball andtrack and field. Men's sports include soccer, cross country, swimming and diving, basket-ball, golf, tennis, baseball and track and field.

Over nearly four decades, the conference hasstriven for athletic and academic success, and has accomplished those goals to a largedegree. The conference has undergone mem-bership changes throughout its long history, the most recent ones significantly enhancingits stability.

Following the 2004-05 academic year, Idahoand Utah State left the Big West, creating aneight-team league comprised of all Californiaschools: Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, CalState Northridge, Long Beach State, UCIrvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara andPacific. A ninth school from the Golden State- UC Davis - became the newest member ofthe Big West on July 1, 2007 after completinga four-year reclassification process fromDivision II to Division I. The Big West owns thedistinction of being the nation's only confer-ence with its entire membership located inone state.

No matter what the membership makeup, theBig West always has stacked up well againstthe rest of the nation. In fact, the conferencehas claimed 17 team national championshipsin its history, including six in women's volley-ball, two in baseball, one in softball and one inmen's basketball. Men's soccer was thenewest sport added to the list when UC SantaBarbara claimed the national title lastDecember.

Individually, Big West athletes also haveclaimed several titles in such sports as swim-ming, track and field, and golf. In fact, CalState Northridge junior Dashalle Andrews wasthe 26th Big West student-athlete to capture acrown when he won the long jump competi-tion at the national meet this past June.

The conference's overall success has beenmeasured through the results of such compe-titions as the United States Sports AcademyDirectors Cup. Presented by the NationalAssociation of Collegiate Directors ofAthletics (NACDA), the Cup gauges the bestoverall collegiate athletics programs in NCAADivision I according to their finishes in NCAApostseason play. In 2006-07, the Big Westwas one of only two non Division I-A confer-ences to have as many as five schools rankedin the top 100. Five schools were slotted with-in the top 91, led by UC Irvine's highest finishever at No. 56. UC Santa Barbara (No. 61),Cal State Fullerton (No. 79), Cal Poly (No. 84)and Long Beach State (No. 91) also had solidsuccess. UCI's ranking was second amongnon Division I-A schools.

On a worldwide scale, Big West athletes alsohave competed over the years in such inter-national competitions as the Olympics andPan-American Games. A sampling of athleteswho have competed at the Olympic levelinclude Long Beach State's Tara Cross-Battle, Tayyiba Haneef and Danielle Scott(women's indoor volleyball), and Misty May(women's beach volleyball); UC SantaBarbara's Jason Lezak (men's swimming), CalState Fullerton's Leon Wood (men's basket-ball) and Jenny Topping (softball); Pacific'sElaina Oden (women's volleyball) and BradSchumacher (men's swimming); and UCIrvine's Steve Scott (men's track and field).

Long Beach State Athletics is heading into a new era spearheaded by the leader-ship of second year Director of Athletics Victor Cegles. Cegles was named Directorof Athletics in April, 2006. He is the 12th Director of Athletics in the school’s histo-ry and brings a wealth of collegiate experience with him to Long Beach.

This past year Cegles began a plan to reorganize the department, especially itsfund-raising efforts. He brought on board additional staff in the areas of develop-ment, marketing and fund-raising in order to help Long Beach State increase itsrevenues and exposure in the community. His mantra of “always getting better” hasresonated throughout the department, with student-athletes and coaches, and inthe community of Long Beach.

From 2003-06, Cegles was at Temple University, where he reorganized the athleticdepartment’s fund-raising endeavors, coordinated efforts between the departmentand the university’s development office and directed corporate sponsorship.Previously, he was vice president of business development for Gaylord SportsManagement in Scottsdale, AZ, after serving 16 years at Arizona State Universityin athletic development and external affairs. He ultimately served as the lead sen-ior associate athletic director for external affairs in his final two years at ASU.
