God displays His great power over all things. He does not tolerate His children

worshiping created things or non-existent gods in place o true worship to

Him. He knows our hearts wander. He rained down fre to compel the Israelites

to worship the true God, and He sent Jesus to display His power over sin and

death, alse worship, and gods that dont exist.

    Dear Sunday School Teacher,

Your ministry as a teacher or our Lord has eternal value! When we view our ministry in light o

eternity, we see its importance and the privilege that God has entrusted to us. In Psalm 78, the

Bible also reminds us o this great calling: One generation commending the Gospel to the next.

Treri Crit Crric:The ministry resource that you hold in your hand is produced

and shaped by the local churchThe Bride o Christ. We have three primary strategies thatguide us. First, we desire to produce a Gospel-centered curriculum that allows every child, babies to

high school students, to study the same Scripture passage each week. Second, we seek to equip

parents to thrive in their God-given role as their childs primary discipler. We want this resource,

thereore, to connect the church and the home by providing the Connecting Church and Home

resource within the curriculum. Third, we want to respond to the

desperate need or curriculum resources around the world. We

desire to bless the nations with a tool that will help them reach

the world with the Gospel o Christ.

    Qrter Oe: God on Display

Every relationship begins with an introduction. God introducing Himsel to us is the heartbeat o

    this study.

God on Display is a major theme that runs throughout all o Scripture. Gods desire to have com-

munion with those He created is seen rom cover to cover o the Bible. In the rst ew pages, we see

God communing in the Garden o Eden with Adam and Eve. The theme o communion continues

to be seen through the role o the Old Testament tabernacle and temple. In the New Testament,

God became incarnate in Jesus, God with us. Ater Jesus, the Father gives the Holy Spirit to believers

and institutes the Church. Fellowship in the Church breeds community, both with God and othersmade in His likeness. As believers, we are guaranteed that we will spend eternity in communion

with God, dwelling in His presence.

God is on display: everywhere; in the past, present and uture; and in our lives as believers. Let us

live continually to display Gods greatness and love.

    Eter te story

The Department o Transportation has given

us wonderul things called roads. These roads

allow us to get rom Point A to Point B with rel-

ative ease. Even i there is a wreck or construc-

tion work blocking a particular route, making it

impossible to navigate, there is usually another

way we can go. Imagine the early settlers o

    our country, having to navigate without roads;

their travel was not as easy or efcient.

In the early 1800s, pioneers headed west to

undiscovered parts o a young nation, Amer-

ica. They traveled in covered wagons made

o wood that could carry up to 2,000 pounds.

These wagons had big wooden hoops, called

bows, that were bent rom side to side. A can-

vas pulled across the hoops protected them

rom adverse weather and the suns heat. The

pioneers used the inside o the wagon to shel-

ter their belongings: ood, weapons, clothes

    and any other personal property.

Many pioneers traveled in wide open country,

so they didnt have a set path or interstate to

take. They blazed trails out west, going where

ew or none had gone beore. They could ven-

ture anywhere they wanted. Just as the pio-

neers had dierent paths they could take to get

to where they were going, we can take dierent

paths too in our daily travel. However, there is

only one path to God, and that is through JesusChrist. There is only one way to get rom Point

A (lie) to Point B (God). Many dierent religions

try to persuade us dierently. However, God has

told us in His Word, the Bible, that there is only

    one path.

In this Treasure Story about Elijah, we see Gods

children limping (going back and orth, not con-

stant) between true worship o God and wanting

to squeeze in other worship to alse gods or the

things they needed, such as rain. God would

not have it. He showed His power to His people

and to the prophets o Baal. How oten do we

worship God but then limp between other gods

(sel or money) to get what we need or to take

care o us? God requires wholehearted worship

rom us. He provided the only possible means.

There are no two paths. The one and only path

    is Christ.

God is the God of wonder andmiracles and the greatest forces of nature bow to

the sovereignty of God. Don Fortner, Discov-

ering Christ in All the Scriptures, pg. 122

Gods jealousy is not a compoundof frustration, envy and spite, as human jealousy

so often is, but appears instead as a (literally)

praiseworthy zeal to preserve something pre-

cious. J. I. Packer, Knowing God, pg. 170

So the Lord, who has betrothed usto Himself in truth, declares that He burns with

the hottest jealousy whenever, neglecting the

purity of His holy marriage, we dele ourselves

with abominable lusts, and especially when the

worship of His Deity, which ought to have been

more carefully kept unimpaired, is transferred to

    another, or adulterated with some superstition;

since in this way we not only violate our plighted

troth [loyalty, pledged faithfulness], but dele the

nuptial couch, by giving access to adulterers.

    story Otie

The nation o Israel had been ruled or many

decades by ungodly kings, who year ater year

enticed the people not to ollow the rules and

direction o Yahweh. In todays Treasure Story,

you will fnd that King Ahab was no dierent.

In act, Scripture tells us that he did more evil in

the sight o the Lord than all the previous kings

(1 Kings 16:30). For 22 years, the nation o Israel

was under the rule o a king who didnt ear the

One God. Since Ahab didnt worship God, he

led Gods people into idolatrous worship.

1 Kigs 16:30-34: And Ahab the son o Omri

did evil in the sight o the LORD, more than all

who were beore him. And as i it had been

a light thing or him to walk in the sins o Je-

roboam the son o Nebat, he took or his wie

Jezebel the daughter o Ethbaal king o the

Sidonians, and went and served Baal and wor-

shiped him. He erected an altar or Baal in the

house o Baal, which he built in Samaria. And

Ahab made an Asherah. Ahab did more to pro-

voke the LORD, the God o Israel, to anger thanall the kings o Israel who were beore him. In

his days Hiel o Bethel built Jericho. He laid its

oundation at the cost o Abiram his frstborn,

and set up its gates at the cost o his youngest

son Segub, according to the word o the LORD,

which he spoke by Joshua the son o Nun.

Elijah is a prophet who was sent to the king to

speak the words o God. Thats what proph-

ets did. The prophet proclaimed the message

given to him. Thus a prophet was a spokesman

or God; he spoke in Gods name and by His au-

thority. He was the mouth by which God spoke

to men, and hence what the prophet said was

not o man but o God. Prophets were the im-

mediate organs o God or the communica-

tion o His mind and will to men (Eastons Bible

    Dictionary).

Elijah was not only a prophet during King

Ahabs time, but his legacy o walking withGod lived on. In the New Testament, he is men-

    tioned nearly 30 times.

But this story isnt primarily about Elijah. This

Treasure Story is about a God who showed His

power when His people were worshiping alse

gods. God shows up in a mighty and power-

ul way to tell the nations and His own children

that He is a consuming fre and will not toler-

    ate idolatry.

Elijah goes to King Ahab and predicts a drought.

His prediction comes true, and the drought lasts

or at least three years. Why was this drought

such a cause or concern? The Israelites were

living in a land that relied on water to help the

crops grow, eed livestock and produce sustain-

able living. The alse god the people were wor-

shiping was Baal, who was the god o rain and

ertility. Obviously, or three years, their alse

god did not help them or listen to their prayers.

    1 Kigs 17:1, 2, 7; 18:1: Now Elijah the Tish-

bite, o Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, As the

LORD, the God o Israel, lives, beore whom I

stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these

years, except by my word. And the word o the

LORD came to him. And ater a while the brook

dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

Ater many days the word o the LORD came to

Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show yoursel

to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.

King Ahab and Elijah meet up ater these three

years and discuss who is to blame or the

drought. The king decides Elijah is to blame,

the prophet who ollows ater God. Elijah de-

clares the truth and says the drought is be-

cause o the alse worship and idolatry King

Ahab has encouraged in the nation o Israel.

Elijah demands a meeting with all the prophets

    o these alse gods.

1 Kigs 18:17-19: When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahabsaid to him, Is it you, you troubler o Israel? And

he answered, I have not troubled Israel, but you

have, and your athers house, because you have

abandoned the commandments o the LORD and

ollowed the Baals. Now thereore send and gath-

er all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450

prophets o Baal and the 400 prophets o Asherah,

    who eat at Jezebels table.

Elijah then gives the ollowing instructions to the

alse prophets. He instructs the group to build analtar and prepare the sacrifce, but do not set it

ablaze. I Baal can set the sacrifce on fre, he is the

true god. I God sets Elijahs sacrifce on fre, He is

the true God. The showdown is on to see whose

god/God will show up. The alse prophets call

on Baal or hours. No answer. They limp around

the altar several times, still no answer. No mat-

ter the pleading rom the prophets, their cries or

fre go unanswered. Elijah mocks them and asks

them, Where is your god? Elijah wonders i he

is thinking, going to the bathroom, traveling, or

just sleeping. Whatever the situation, Baal does

    not answer.

Something was wrong withBaals ears. Somehow he was unable to hear the

pleas of his priests. Elijah suggested several ex-

cuses for him. None gave much comfort to the

priests. They grew desperate with their pleading.

They resorted to screaming and cutting themselves

with knives and lances. This accomplished noth-ing. They were calling upon the wrong name. The

Lord God of heaven does not respond to the name

Baal. R. C. Sproul, One Holy Passion, pg. 175

1 Kigs 18:21-30: And Elijah came near to all

the people and said, How long will you go limp-

ing between two dierent opinions? I the LORD

is God, ollow Him; but i Baal, then ollow him.

And the people did not answer him a word. Then

Elijah said to the people, I, even I only, am let a

prophet o the LORD, but Baals prophets are 450men. Let two bulls be given to us, and let them

choose one bull or themselves and cut it in

pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fre to it.

And I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the

wood and put no fre to it. And you call upon the

name o your god, and I will call upon the name

o the LORD, and the God who answers by fre, he

is God. And all the people answered, It is well

spoken. Then Elijah said to the prophets o Baal,

Choose or yourselves one bull and prepare it

frst, or you are many, and call upon the name oyour god, but put no fre to it. And they took the

bull that was given them, and they prepared it

and called upon the name o Baal rom morning

until noon, saying, O Baal, answer us! But there

was no voice, and no one answered. And they

limped around the altar that they had made. And

at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, Cry aloud,

or he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is reliev-

ing himsel, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is

asleep and must be awakened. And they cried

aloud and cut themselves ater their custom withswords and lances, until the blood gushed out

upon them. And as midday passed, they raved

on until the time o the oering o the oblation

[an act o worship, sacrifce], but there was no

voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.

Then Elijah said to all the people, Come near to

me. And all the people came near to him. And

he repaired the altar o the LORD that had been

    thrown down.

Elijah then prepares the altar or a sacrifce to theLord. And in the midst o a drought, Elijah asks or

water to be poured out on the altar three times.

Elijah prays to Yahweh that He would answer his

prayer in order or the people to know that He is

indeed God. God is the one that has led the people

to repentance. God answers his prayer and sends

freimmediately. No one could blame wet altars

gOd lIVEs. The rst declaration rom the prophet Elijah (1 Kings 17:1) declares this truth or the

whole Treasure Story passage (1 Kings 17-18). God is holy, set apart rom any other gods, in the

simplicity o the act that He lives. No other god that the Israelites worship is alive. God, the God o

    Israel, Yahweh, lives.

gOd dIsPlaYs hIs POWER OVER naTuRE. God declares that there will be no rain, and there isnt

or more than three years in the land: Clearly, 1 Kings 17-18 demonstrates Gods rule over nature

in a way that eliminates the nature god Baal rom consideration as a living deity (Paul House, Old

    Testament Theology, pg. 261).

gOd dIsPlaYs hIs POWER FOR hIs gREaT FamE. God wanted all people to worship Him and

or not allowing the fre to ignite. The fre rom

    heaven came and consumedEVERYTHING.

1 Kigs 18:36-38: And at the time o the o-ering o the oblation, Elijah the prophet came

near and said, O LORD, God o Abraham, Isaac,

and Israel, let it be known this day that you are

God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and

that I have done all these things at your word.

Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people

may know that you, O LORD, are God, and that

you have turned their hearts back. Then the fre

o the LORD ell and consumed the burnt oer-

ing and the wood and the stones and the dust,

and licked up the water that was in the trench.

What is the peoples response? Immediate wor-

ship. Elijah then has all the prophets o Baal

    seized and killed.

1 Kigs 18:39-40: And when all the people

saw it, they ell on their aces and said, The

LORD, He is God; the LORD, He is God. And Eli-

jah said to them, Seize the prophets o Baal; let

    Gospel Truths About Man

We see the wickedness o the people in Israel in this passage. Ahab, the wicked king o Israel, also led the

Israelites in doing evil. The Word gives a clear portrait o what Ahab was like in 1 Kings 16:30-34: an evil-

doer and idolater who established altars to other gods and provoked God to anger because o his sin.

These are all characteristics we still nd in ourselves today. We are all idolaterspeople who love other

things and people more than God. This idol worship provokes God to anger.

    Gospel Truths About Redemption

God knew our bent toward sin. He knew He would have to send a Redeemer to put an end to all o

our sin, our idolatry and our desire to worship alse gods. He knew Jesus would be the only One who

could right all o these wrongs.

No one answers when the Baalists pray to Baal(1 Kings 18:26-29) because Baal does not have a voice, an ear or a

heart. He is not there, nor is he real. Paul House, Old Testament

    Theology, pg. 261

The best news of the Christian Gospel is that the supremelyglorious Creator of the universe has acted in Jesus Christs death and resurrection to re-

move every obstacle between us and Himself so that we may nd everlasting joy in seeing

and savoring His innite beauty. John Piper, God Is the Gospel, pg. 147

put us to shame, because Gods love has beenpoured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit

gti 5:16-25: But I say, walk by the Spirit,

and you will not gratiy the desires o the fesh.

For the desires o the fesh are against the

Spirit, and the desires o the Spirit are against

the fesh, or these are opposed to each other,

to keep you rom doing the things you want to

do. But i you are led by the Spirit, you are not

under the law. Now the works o the fesh are

    evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensual-

ity, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strie, jealousy, ts

o anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy,

drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I

warn you, as I warned you beore, that those

who do such things will not inherit the king-

dom o God. But the ruit o the Spirit is love,

joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, aith-

    ulness, gentleness, sel-control; against such

things there is no law. And those who belong

to Christ Jesus have crucied the fesh with its

passions and desires. I we live by the Spirit, let

us also walk by the Spirit.

    My Mission As Teacher:

What areas o idolatry has God showed you in your lie? What are you willing to do to live in a

    right relationship with Him?

    Prayer Points:

Pray that the Spirit would continue to convict you of the sin in your life and how you can repent

o those sins and live to make His name great.

Pray that God would show Himself great and worthy to your students this week. Pray that they

would seek to know Him more than they would desire to make their own name great.

God displays His great power over all things. He does not

tolerate His children worshiping created things or non-

existent gods in place o true worship to Him. He knows

our hearts wander. He rained down fre to compel the

Israelites to worship the true God, and He sent Jesus to

display His power over sin and death, alse worship, and

    gods that dont exist.

Abby Tracy is a remarkable 23-year-old young lady rom Arizona who now lives in Kampala, Ugan-

da. More than two million children live on the streets in Uganda, and Abby wants to share the Gos-

pel with them and rescue many rom the violence, abuse and loneliness they experience on a daily

basis. These children do not have parents or anyone caring or them. Every night they sleep on the

streets with a piece o cardboard or a pillow and a piece o trash or a blanket.

Recently Abby visited the States and a group o college-age women asked her this question, Abby,

at 23, do you ever desire to live here in the States, get a car, start your career, get an iPhone, updateyour Facebook status like everyone else and live the American dream? Her reply was simple but

pointed and biblical, All those things you just mentioned, every one o them is temporal, feeting

and ading but the souls o these children are eternal. I I do not share Christ with them, who will?

connectOur hearts are so prone to set our aections on things (idols). In this weeks lesson, your children

will study Elijah and an idol that people in his day bowed to called Baal. Gods glory was given to

another and He could not allow His people to live in their sin o idol worship. Remember Exodus 20?

    No other idols . . .

Can we think o an idol our amily might be tempted to bow to?

As those in Elijahs day, we are oten tempted to worship idols. Even our children can become our

idols i we arent careul. Do our calendars, budgets, ears and anxieties all revolve around those

things that will last or eternity and how are we helping our children to do the same?
