Interactive and Integrative Lesson PlanTides

(Date)

I.   Objectives

Cognitive : Infer that the revolution of the moon around the earth causes the natural occurrences of

tides• Describe the occurrence of tides.

• Explain how high and low tides occur.

• Explain why there are high and low tides about every twelve hours.

Psychomotor  : Show through a tellurian the positions of the moon and the earth to places where high andlow tides occur.

Affective : Recognize that there are also high tides and low tides in life and that people under lowtides need understanding and love.

/. 0eople living along the coastlines are familiar with the periodic rise and fall of the water level about

every twelve hours of the day. $hese occurrences are %nown as tides. $ides are caused by thegravitational pull of the moon upon the waters of Earth. $he moon#s gravity pulls out a tidal bulge onthe side of Earth facing the moon' called the direct tide.

-. )t the same time' the water in the oceans on the opposite side of Earth is least affected by themoon#s gravity. 1ut a similar but lesser tidal bulge is also created because of the centrifugal forceresulting from Earth#s rotation and revolution. $his tidal bulge is called the opposite tide. )nd becauseEarth rotates once a day' we would expect two high tides' about every twelve hours of each day.

+. $he sun#s gravity also creates tidal bulges on Earth. "owever' the tides caused by the sun are much

wea%er because of the sun#s great distance from Earth. $wice each month' during the new moon andfull moon' the sun and the moon are in line with Earth. )t such occasions' the tidal effects of both areadded together. )s a result the tides are higher than usual and are %nown as spring tides.

2. )t the first and last 3uarter of the moon#s orbit' the sun and the moon are at right angles to eachother. )t these occasions' the high tides are lower than usual because the tidal bulges of the sun andthe moon tend to cancel each other. $hese lower tides are %nown as neap tides.

3.   Presentation

For many years, astrologers and astronomers have known the direct relationshi between the moon and bodies

of water. !eole living along the coastlines are familiar with the eriodic rise and fall of the water level about every

twelve hours of the day."f the moon has such an effect on the seas and oceans of the world, astrologers infer that it has the same effect

on eole. #fter all, the human body is more than half water. #s a matter of fact, eole branded as lunatic $from %atin

luna meaning moon& show weird and senseless conduct during the full moons. Whether or not this form of insanity is

directly associated with the moon is yet to be scientifically roven. What is scientifically known is the directassociation between the moon and the waters of the earth.

4.   $once!t 'or(ation

1. $'how video cli of tides&

2. (en your books to age 3)2.3. What do you call the eriodic rise and fall of the water level about every twelve hours of the day?

*. What causes tides?

+. $"llustrate with a drawing or icture of tidal bulge&

. "f the moon-s gravity is resonsible for the tidal bulge at the same side of the earth, why does a similar though

lesser tidal bulge also occur at the oosite side of the moon?. What names are given to the tide at the same side of the moon and the tide at the oosite side of the moon?

/. Why are there high tides about every twelve hours of each day?

0. he sun-s gravity also creates tidal bulges on arth. Why are tides caused by the sun lower or weaker?

1). "n activity 1 on age 3)3, you will investigate the tides caused by the relative ositions of the moon and the

sun.

11. $#llow 2) minutes for the activity then discuss the results.&12. Describe the ositions of the sun and moon during new moon.

13. Describe the ositions of the sun and moon during full moon.

1*. ow do the gravitational attractions of the sun and moon act during the new moon and full moon?

1+. What kind of tide occurs at these times?1. Describe sring tides.

1. Describe the ositions of the sun and the moon at the first and last 4uarter of the moon-s orbit.

1/. #t these occasions, why are the high tides lower than usual?

10. What are these tides called?

2). ow do tides affect the lives of eole living near the coastlines?21. ow do tides affect the laces below sea level?

5.   )n*ance(ent Activity

ow are tides formed? age 3)3

6.   +enerali,ations

What causes tides? Why should we e5ect a high tide about every 12 hours of the day?

What is the difference between sring tide and nea tide?

7.   A!!lication%Integration

Some people seem to be affected by the moon just like the earth. For that reason, they are called "lunatics".

Some researches also indicate a high incidence of crime during full moons and new moons. While there is not yet

any scientific evidence to relate the moon's gravity with the state of the mind, it cannot be denied that people

sometimes eperience "high" and "low" tides in their lives. !t is especially during their "low tides" that they need

love and understanding.

8.   )valuation

Question and Answer Test.

1. ow does gravity cause tides?

2. Why do tides change over the course of a month?

3. When would a erson going fishing on a beach have the best chance of catching a fish? Defend your answer.

*. Why do tides occur twice in a day?

9.   Assign(ent
