FORT ST. JOHN - The “walking dead” will be taking over the streets of Fort St. John this Saturday. The North Peace Arena will be the meeting ground for the dressed up zombie-like corpses for both the zombie walk and a zombie themed roller derby match. After the walk The Energetic City Roller Derby Association’s will have its first, official match against the Grand Prairie Kryp Keepers.Everyone is welcome to join in on the zombie walk that will take place down-town and at the mall, on one condition: a non-perishable food has to be donated to stock food at the local food bank. The zombie walk is a fundraiser for the Salvation Army food bank. Though the walk is to raise money for a good cause, it has also raised concerns. On a local news site, some readers did not find the fun in people dressing up like zombies in broad daylight. User, Mamaoffour said, “Must make a note to keep my very young children out of downtown on that day...I saw pictures of last year
and I don’t see any reason to scare them half to death this year. Too bad this has to be out in public like it is.”Zombie walks have been made popular around North America. In the Lower Mainland, Vancouver started hosting zombie walks in 2005, during the afternoon. Kim Large, coordinator of the event, advises those who may not be interested in the event to stay clear of the downtown area. The walk will go from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. It will start at the North Peace Arena, head over to 100 Street, south on 92 Avenue, east on 96 Avenue, through the mall and back up to 96 Avenue to the arena. She said last year’s zombie walk had 100 participants and raised 365 pounds of food. She is hoping they will be able to exceed that amount of food this year. The roller derby match is at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 if you participate in the walk and $7 for spectators.
Last summer saw a surprise invasion of zombies in Fort St. John. This year, there is some warning as the Northeast News has been tipped off that they will return on Saturday, August 13.Northeast News reporter Kyla Corpuz has gathered some tips on what you can do to fend off a zombie. She spent the past week speaking with some experts on zombies and studying documentaries on the subject like Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, Army of Darkness and I Was a Teenage Zombie.TIPS ON HOW TO FEND OFF A ZOMBIE: (not to be taken literally or actually used during this week-end’s zombie walk, because as deceiving as they may look, they are still alive.)• As much as the video game Left 4 Dead perceives a frying pan to be a good weapon, it will not get you far, unless you have the swing of an NBL player. • Don’t try to hide from the zombies, run away. Hiding will leave you with no escape route, and they can smell human blood, so you’ll just attract them — and once they find you, that closet may end up being your coffin. • But if you must hide, the taller the hiding place the better, like roofs or cities or towns with high altitudes; it will keep you safe for the time being.• That zombie walks faster than you think, so never slow down.• But if you happen to be caught in a crowd of zombies, with no way out, just try to act like them. But once they smell you — you better run your heart out.• When you are running, try your very hardest not to trip.• Explosive devices come in handy as a distraction and it will maybe even knock a couple zombies off their feet, for good.• The head is the best target, and should probably be the only target.• If you can’t operate a plane, a boat is the next best thing, but Google-map what island you’re heading towards and then search that the population is at zero, because you definitely don’t want a repeat of Dawn of the Dead.
Zombies are coming
Ayla Malcolm photoZombies will once again roam the streets of Fort St. John as participants try to raise food and money for the Salvation Army food bank.

rocks along 86 Street to 98 Street between 99 Avenue to 96 Avenue, is just another indicator that vandalism is a major offence in Fort St. John.
Several businesses were the victims of shattered windows, reported to have happened early
morning on Jul. 31. At this time the RCMP said they do not have suspects on who caused the damage, but received tips that five to seven teenagers were spotted in the “immediate area” during the occurrences according to a press release.
Wallnutz on 98 Avenue had over ten windows broken and Dark Flavour was left to board up.It wasn’t the first time that Luke Rechsteiner, manager at the skate shop Dark Flavour, has dealt
with young hooligans. The previous store he owned was targeted multiple times, so he perma-nently put three-quarter inch boards instead of windows.
When he moved to the shop he currently owns on 99 Avenue, the building owners wouldn’t allow him to put up plywood, so they installed metal bars behind the glass — but not even that stopped the window-breaking.
He estimates the total damage of product and windows would cost $3,000. Rechsteiner suspects the teenagers used the decorative rocks that line the parking lot of the
co-op mall to break the windows.“It would be a smart idea to get rid of [the rocks], or cement it,” said Rechsteiner. The RCMP sent out a release the following week that said stop signs and construction signs
were also removed. A $2,000 reward will be given for information leading to an arrest or charge said the release.

By Jill EarlDAWSON CREEK – It was an emotional day for Doris
Barabas, returning to her childhood property now home to approximately 56 people living in Driver House, an affordable Aboriginal housing building and brainchild of the Dawson Creek Native Housing Society.
Doris (Driver) Barabas and sister Lola Wall, who died June 21st, 2010, donated the land, valued at $130,000, to the society that Wall had sat on the board of directors for 12 years.
“What can one say, when they come back to this? Thank you for coming and sharing with us…I’m grateful that people have a home now, thank you, mom and daddy would be pleased too, thank you,” Barabas said.
The Native Housing Society was able to secure a grant
from the province of $10.4 million, completed its project and c e l e b r a t e d its one year anniversary l a s t Wednesday, Aug. 3.
“I was able to be at the very first meeting talking about the desire D a w s o n Creek had to create such a great place. And here it is, the dream has come into fruition, so congratulations to Native Housing,” said Judith Desjarlais, President of the Dawson Creek Native Housing Society.
The building boasts 25 units made up of one, two, and three bedroom apartments, 18 units for elders and seven units for families. The building is running without subsidy and is also energy efficient, meeting LEED Gold standards.
“This is really an impressive facility to have for our elders in the community and families to have a place to call home, to be able to have a place to remain here in Dawson Creek with family and to us that’s very important,” said Mayor Mike Bernier.
In addition to the $10.4 million given by the province, the City of Dawson Creek also provided some additional land to the project estimated at $25,200.
“But a project like this is about more then the dollars and cents,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Blair Lekstrom.
“It’s more than just the building itself, as beautiful as this building is and the character it has and the land it sits on. It’s about the people that inhabit it, and the families that are here,” Lekstrom continued.
Along with many others,
Lekstrom thanked the partnership between the Government and the community organization that had the drive to make this project really happen.
“This is about a partnership, this is about the Native Housing Society really having a dream and a vision approaching the government and the local government as well. And saying, look we have this, we would like to do it. We aren’t asking for a whole lot, we have a vision, we know what we want, we want something with character, we want something that reflects our culture,” Lekstrom said.
Driver House, one of 53 affordable Aboriginal housing units in the Dawson Creek area, will provide security to the individuals residing there, ultimately benefiting the entire community.
“Such a beautiful place and having safe secure homes will help create and strengthen strong Aboriginal families that are resilient to the changes that are happening and to some of the challenges they face,” Desjarlais said.
Resident Alice Dafoe is still grateful for her new living space, after moving in almost a year ago.
“I really like it here. It’s brand new, warm in the winter, and laundry is free,” Dafoe says.
Dafoe, an elder, describes how she used to wash her clothes by hand and how her health declined while living at her last home because of the cold temperatures.
“This is a mansion to me,” she said.

By Kyla CorpuzFORT ST. JOHN - There is never a perfect time to hear your
unborn child has a condition that affects one in 2,000 to 3,000 births, where chances of survival are so slim, sometimes there isn’t even one.
Jess Cotton had just finished an ultrasound 25 weeks into her pregnancy when the news was broken to her: her son’s heart was developing on the right side of his body. Shortly after, her baby was prenatally diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). As soon as those string of words emptied out of the doc-tor’s mouth her family’s lives were instantly changed.
It was as if she went numb, like a waterfall was drowning out the voices, unable to process exactly what she was being told.
CDH is a condition that means the diaphragm doesn’t fully form — leaving a hole for abdominal organs to form in the chest cavity. Since there isn’t room for organs to grow in the chest cavity it results in underdeveloped lungs. There are varying degrees of CDH, left sided and right sided. Seth was diagnosed with left sided CDH, which is more common and easier to treat of the two.
Oct. 7, 2010, exactly three weeks before his scheduled C-section Seth was delivered at the B.C. Children’s Hospital in
Vancouver. He was intubated one minute after he was born and it wasn’t until eight hours later that Jess and her husband Jeremy were able to see their son.
Seth underwent surgery just nine days after he was born. Before that he was struggling with pulmonary hypertension, which means there was too much pressure on the right side of his heart. This tension would have been fatal if it wasn’t decreased before surgery, so he was put under two medications that stabilized him.
Jess described the surgery as a turning point for Seth, and his road to recovery surpassed all expectations.
“When he came back from surgery, it was a different child that came back,” said Jess as she pulled Seth close to her.
He started to eat without any reflux, which is rare for babies with CDH, then his I.V.’s were removed and soon he was breathing on his own. It was a little over a month that Seth was able to go home.
“They called him a rising star in the NICU, because once he started he didn’t stop.”
Before Seth was born, the doctors predicted that the family would be in the hospital for at least four months, they were discharged at six weeks.
Jess, Jeremy, their two daughters, Gwenna and Abigail and Teresa, their grandmother, all stayed in a small hotel room during
their stay in Vancouver. The medical and travel expenses were running high, but some
of it was offset by fundraisers. Through Jess’ mother Teresa, who works at Wal Mart, they were able to have a space to sell candles, cotton candy and popcorn that raised a little over $3,000.
“Financially it has been a huge strain on the family, but I don’t know if we could have done it without the fundraising … we really couldn’t have done it if we hadn’t moved here before he was diagnosed. We lived in Fort Nelson and I don’t think we could have got the same type of support as we do here,” said Jess.
Today Seth is still being seen by doctors and pediatricians to ensure he stays healthy. Though there is still a 20 per cent risk of re-herniating, he is growing and developing better than expected, almost able to stand on his own said Jess.
“He has definitely impacted our lives more than any other child ever could have,” said Jess.
Through this journey Jess has become close with other moth-er’s who walked the same trench she did, and learned that this past weekend, three babies died from CDH.
When Seth celebrates his first birthday in the middle of October, it won’t only be a celebration of life but also a celebra-tion of bravery and strength.

By Jill EarlPOUCE COUPE – To him, there was no option. Rodeo was his
future. Rodeo professional, Clayton Moore grew up in a life style only
befitting of a true Cowboy. Born in Denton, Texas into a rodeo family. At a young age his mother, a barrel racer, remarried and they both moved to Pouce Coupe with his stepfather.
“I grew up in a rodeo family. My mom and dad both rodeod, so it was natural for me to get into it. I grew on a ranch too so, the two kinda play hand in hand,” Moore said.
At 30 years old, Moore’s career highlights include attending the Calgary Stampede three times and winning the 2010 Kananaskis Indoor Pro Rodeo. Moore also currently holds sixth place in the high point standings in the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association. His events are tie down roping, steer wrestling, and team roping.
His relationship with riding, horses, and the rodeo date back so far that he can hardly remember when it all began.
“I probably was riding horses before I could walk, I don’t remember that. I was a baby when I first started. I don’t remember learning how to ride at all.”
Moore also only vaguely remembers his first steer riding experience, in a time before helmets and flat vests were obvious safety gear.
“I think I was five when I got on my first steer. Then I didn’t get on another one until I was seven, then I started riding a bunch. I don’t really remember that experience either. But it wasn’t ever something my parents forced on me, they never said ‘you’re going to learn to ride a steer today’, it was something that I wanted to do, I’d seen the older kids doing it and I just went from there. I guess I thought I was big enough to handle it.”
Continuing to rodeo into his teens and being quite successful at it, Moore competed in his first Calgary Stampede in 1995 at 13 years old.
“I was 13, so it was hard to remember. It was pretty neat; I’d never been to anything that big before. Being there as a steer rider, I looked up to all the bull riders that were there that I’d never seen before and it was a big deal for me to go and ask those guys to help me on. These are all
guys that I grew up watching and looked up to,” he said. From riding bulls and roping calfs in High school, to attending rodeo
school at Panhandle State University in Goodwell Oklahoma, going professional was just the next step. After competing as an amateur for a year he had his rookie year in 2001 and has been riding as a professional ever since.
Though the rodeo is an intensely physical sport, it’s always been just as a strong mental game for Moore. Being in the rodeo and traveling is expensive and exhausting and when luck isn’t on your side it can take a toll on the rider.
“The miles get tiring. If a guy’s rolling and winning it’s not as bad. When you’re not winning for three to four weeks it get’s hard to stay focused and positive. It’s really expensive, you can burn up $10,000 pretty quick- especially if your not winning.”
“Lots of guys just give up,” says Moore’s friend Mark Nugent, a tie down roping director.
Moore admits that he’s been broke on more then a few occasions, but surrounds himself with positive people, focuses on good things and tries to think of Calgary to get him by. While on the road he tries to block out tiredness and just tries to stay on top of things like his horses and equipment. He tries to do his homework in case luck does comes his way he can be ready for it. Although not superstitious, he does try to stick to routines that have helped him in the past. For instance, the first year he made finals he wore the same blue jeans and plaid long sleeve shirt to all the rounds he placed in or won. He estimates winnings of around $30,000 in that outfit before his luck went cold and he threw it away.
“Whatever is working, I try to stick to it,” he said. No matter if luck is with him or not, when it’s competition time
Moore keeps focus. “I try to just focus on the start and let the rest take care of itself. Don’t
sweat the stuff you can’t control,” he says. The risk of injury is high for these athletes so Moore doesn’t find
himself practicing as often as he did when he was younger, when he thought his body was ‘bullet-proof.” In the last three years Moore has
had two major injuries, tearing his ACL and MCL in 2009 leaving him out of competition for eight months and in 2010 during the Canadian finals tore his pectoral muscle, which took him six months to recover from. Despite these setbacks, there’s no way he would consider a different career.
“As long as I stay healthy I’m going to keep going until I accomplish everything that I want. There’s still lots to be done.”
Moore refers to the Canadian World Championship and Nationals hosted in Las Vegas.
In the slower season of the new year when rodeos aren’t as plentiful Moore buys feeder cattle and also trains and sells horses to make a little extra money. He benefits from being a good horseman during the rodeo season in times when he can’t bring his own horses Pistol and Tiger into competition, and instead has to borrow someone else’s (mounting out).
“I’ve had luck getting on other people’s horses that I didn’t really know,” he said.
“That’s the bonus of him being a good horseman, being able to train your own, most guys can’t even train,” says Nugent.
In his spare time, which is rare with entering in approximately 50 rodeos a year, Moore enjoys hunting, fishing, drawing, and painting. Moore is also quick to help the next generation of rodeo-ers to keep the sport alive.
“I help a lot of kids. They’ll stay at my house and I’ll put them to work, and help them with whatever they need help with”
Though his relationship with the rodeo has practically been life-long, he can’t really sum it up.
“I don’t really know,” he said, and smiled. “There are a lot of great things about it that have nothing to do with rodeo.” Moore lists having friends in just about every town, the camaraderie,
and the freedom, as some of those great things. “You get to see the country from the front seat of your pickup,” he
adds. In good and bad times, for Moore rodeo is his life. “There was no second thought about doing anything else. I don’t
remember there ever being an option.”

Words of Opinion by Brent HodsonMost people are still on vacation in August but not the theatre
crowd in Fort St. John. It is shaping up to be a busy one and it all starts this month.
This weekend, Floater Studios, Stage North Theatre Society, Spontaneous Combustion and On The Rocks Pub & Nightclub are working together to bring you Falling Down the Well - Perverted Nursery Rhymes for Perverts. This production is written and directed by Steven Andrews and stars Steven, Zac Scott and Dallas Ashdown.
This play is an opportunity to experience the classic nursery rhymes retold in a way you will not forget. This high energy show promises to be full of love, tears, death, laughter, a spider, imaginary nudity, and of course 80s music.
You can catch this show playing on Friday, August 12 and Saturday, August 13 at On The Rocks.
Stage North has recently announced their lineup for the 2011/2012 season and it starts with Cabaret in October. This show will set you back to the 1930s where you will get to experience the Kit Kat Klub in Berlin.
Next will be You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown that will play after Christmas including a special New Year’s Eve showing.
In the new year, the society will bring The Good Game to the stage in February, Hockey Mom, Hockey Dad will be the play in April and then Death and the Maiden will wrap up the season in May.
Among the shows, there are a few fundraising events as well to watch for including Oscar Night on the Big Screen and Dinner Palooza with Spontaneous Combustion.

By Jill EarlDAWSON CREEK – After nine days of building, learning,
and driving, girls in the Rising Spirit Aboriginal Youth Centre’s program Go Kart for Girls finally had a chance to race in the program’s sixth annual event last Saturday.
Rising Spirit, owned and operated by the North East Native Advancing Society, opened the program to 11 to 15-year old girls exposing them to mechanics for most participants, for the very first time.
“It’s meant to expose them to trades in a non threatening environment. Girls never have the opportunity to shine with a lot of apprentice and trade work,” says Audrey Sam, Executive Director of NENAS.
With the help of trained professionals in four different towns
Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, Fort St. John, and Fort Nelson, this year’s program introduced 14 girls to the ins and outs of building a go-kart. In eight days, each team takes apart and reconstructs the engine, learns about different tools, welding,
and steering principles. A few years ago, Stacy Smith, Go Kart for Girls instructor and Trades program Chair at Northern Lights College in Fort St. John put together a curriculum for the program so that the participants could have a package to look through. The package provides diagrams, covers safety and the theory of how an engine works- explaining everything in simple terms so that everyone can understand.
“When you see it click in their head, that’s the best part about teaching. And of course when they get to drive their masterpieces,” says Smith, who has been with the program since it started.
On the ninth day, participants met at the racetrack, this year the
parking lot of the EnCana Events Centre, to learn how to drive the karts. Sydney Stoneman, and her father, make the five-hour trip from Quesnel each year to conduct the driving school. They teach the students how to operate the karts, as well as safety tips and procedures on the track.
“It’s always surprising how much they learn, it’s inspirational and motivational how much they learn in a few short days,” says Sydney, who used to race go-karts professionally.
Before race day, all the girls join in on a slumber party with snacks, movies, and games. Race day brings out family and friends to cheer on the teams, as well as the events’ sponsors, and of coarse the instructors who are there to help fix any wear and tear on the karts and problems on the track.
Besides mechanics, the girls are learning discipline, respect, and teamwork, as well as getting a taste of friendly competition.
“It encourages them to be OK with breaking into a traditionally male field- mechanics...They build their own go-karts, learn how to weld, how to paint, and most of all team spirit. A team doesn’t work without working together,” says Amiee Chalifoux, Program Coordinator of Rising Spirit.
Kadralynn Arneson, 12, describes the program as the best 10 days of her life.
“ I did a lot better then I thought I would. I’ve already recommended it to a friend,” says Arneson, who was inspired by her instructor Crystal Campen.
“Our instructor was a girl mechanic, now I want to take it (mechanics) in high school, instead of home economics,” Arneson says.

By The Investors GroupThe Canada Pension Plan (CPP) is changing in gradual phases
between 2011 and 2016 with the first big change beginning in 2011. Does that mean you need to rethink when to begin receiving your CPP pension? Maybe – here’s why:
These days, ‘retirement’ means many things – from ceasing employment to working part-time or even starting your own business -- and the CPP changes are intended to provide more financial flexibility depending on the retirement ‘path’ you choose. They are also meant to encourage Canadians to work longer before starting to draw a government pension.
Your monthly CPP pension amount will increase (gradually from 2011 to 2013) by a larger percentage if you take it after age 65 but you’ll see a bigger decrease if you opt to take it earlier.
If you are age 65 in 2011, the maximum CPP benefit is $960 per month. If you wait until 2013 (and are age 70), your CPP cheque will be 42 per cent more than that.
Taking your CPP pension before age 65 makes sense when: • Your life expectancy is below the average of age 80 - 85. • You have an illness that does not qualify for CPP disability. • You have little or no other income. • You are permanently unemployed. Delaying your CPP pension beyond age 65 makes sense when: • You health is good. • Your life expectancy is above average. • You have a reasonable income and/or intend to continue
working after 65. The work cessation rule has been eliminated. Before the
changes you had to be at least 60 years of age and not working for at least two months in order to collect CPP. Now, starting at age 60, you can continue working and still receive CPP benefits. Under the old rules, once you began collecting CPP you never again had to contribute to the plan. Now, however, if you are under 65 and working while receiving a CPP pension, you (and your employer) will have to continue making CPP contributions (that will increase your CPP benefits beginning in 2013). If you are 65 - 70 and work while receiving CPP benefits, you have the choice of continuing to make CPP contributions (that will increase your CPP benefits beginning in 2013) or not.
The earnings drop-out provision, which allows you to exclude a portion of your pensionable earnings that can reduce your CPP benefit, has been changed. Previously, if you retired at 65,
you could ‘drop-out’ seven of your lowest earning years from age 18 to 65 when you were eligible to contribute to CPP. Under the revised rules, that ‘drop-out’ period increases to 7.5 years in 2012 and 8 years in 2014.
Talk to your professional advisor about getting the most out of the new CPP changes – and every other aspect of your financial and retirement life.

Editor: The past five and a half years in the Peace Country as President and CEO of
Northern Lights College have been very fulfilling. The potential I noted for NLC when I decided to apply for this position is
evolving and becoming a reality. The addition of the Centre of Excellence for Clean Energy Technologies in Dawson Creek, combined with the Jim Kassen Industry Training Centre/ Oil and Gas Centre of Excellence in Fort St. John, allows Northern Lights College to fulfil its brand as B.C.'s Energy College™.
NLC is committed to providing the skilled workers for these expanding industrial sectors and supporting the economic development of the region. Given the scope of the industrial expansion in our region, a major part of my role at the College was to build capacity through partnerships with other post-secondary institutions and industry, and to ensure that funding provided by the government supports the breadth and depth of needed programming.
I knew Northern Lights College was a "classy" institution when the first person to welcome
me to my new job was the former President, Jim Kassen. He committed 25 years to NLC and provided me with a firm foundation on which to build.
T h e institution is fortunate to have capable faculty and
staff, and has been able to recruit experienced leaders in many departments. The leadership team members are exceptional and I have been proud to work with them. Further, the clarity of the College's vision is attracting experienced professionals who want to contribute to an organization that "knows where it is going".
It also has been gratifying to collaborate on Dual Credit programming with local School Districts, industry, Aboriginal agencies and other post-secondary partners through Northern Opportunities. The Peace Region is very fortunate to have a group of exceptional leaders committed to expanding the scope of this program and to spreading the word on the benefits of this innovative educational initiative. I have been very impressed by the passion for learning these leaders bring to the table, but also for their continuing commitment to finding learning solutions for the youth of the region.
Over the years, I have received support and encouragement from local politicians, including: Senator Richard Neufeld, the former Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources; Jay Hill, former Member of Parliament for Prince George-Peace River; Blair Lekstrom, MLA for Peace River South and former Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources; and Pat Pimm, MLA for Peace River North. And I would like to acknowledge the exceptional municipal and regional leadership provided by the Chiefs and Band Councils, Mayors and Councils, and Regional District Boards. I was impressed by the quality of leadership demonstrated by members of the oil and gas and renewable energy industries. Thank you to all for being willing to work with Northern Lights College on joint planning that benefits the region.
The College’s Board of Governors recruited me to make changes and supported me when the changes became uncomfortable. I was very appreciative of this support and pleased that the original Board and succeeding Boards provided progressive direction and encouraged innovation. I am particularly proud that we continued to focus on the fundamental mandate of providing education for quality of life in the region, and that we were responsive to requests by industry for new programming.
I am looking forward to the innovative initiatives and opportunities for applied research in clean energy technologies that are in the planning stages. Through partnerships with provincial, national and international leaders in this evolving industry, Northern Lights College is poised to demonstrate the strength of its vision. I will be cheering from afar as these plans become operational.
My husband Gordon and I made friends with a number of very special people in the north and we will miss you. We were treated to the unique brand of warmth, enthusiasm and innovative spirit we now associate with northern British Columbia.
A fond farewell to you all and our sincere thank you for your many kindnesses. D. Jean Valgardson, Dawson Creek

By Michele Mobley ~ Literacy Outreach Coordinator PEACE REGION – Now that summer is here, it is a perfect
time to get outside and enjoy some physical activity. You don’t have to be a marathon runner to be physically active. The easiest way to make physical activity stick, is to make it part of your routine! Go for a stroll with your friends or family, walk your dog, dust off your bike, or discover trails around your
neighbourhood. Turn a simple walk to the park into a scavenger hunt by creating a small list before you leave home. Younger family members will have a great time looking for pinecones, feathers or special rocks on the way to the playground! Summer is also a great time to enjoy a wide range of seasonal fruits and vegetables, so take advantage of your local farmer’s market! Studies show us that when we keep our bodies healthy and
active, our minds stay healthy and active too. So experiment with seasonal produce, and make a commitment to incorporate physical activity into your daily life; your body…and your mind will thank you!
Michele Mobley is a Literacy Outreach Coordinator for Dawson Creek. She can be reached at [email protected] or join their Facebook group “Dawson Creek Literacy Now”.

Submitted by North Peace SPCAThis month we would like to highlight some happy endings for alumni SPCA adopt-
ees;MARIA
Meet Maria…and her new “mom” Marion. After reading an SPCA article and seeing a photo of Maria, Marion knew without a doubt that she was about to welcome a new friend to her home.
In Marion’s words, “Maria is an attractive, older dog who was in need of a loving home”. When she saw Maria at the North Peace shelter, there was an instant bond. Marion shook Maria’s paw and told her she was going home. Since that day, Maria has become a companion and best friend to Marion.
“If you could only see how much this loving older dog has to offer…” We all know the saying that like fine wine - it gets better with age? Such is the case with Maria.
A warm bed at night, a fenced yard to play in and a best friend for life; what more could you ask for!
Congratulations Marion and Maria.
HORTON & THORTONHorton and Thorton are two dogs that were in a very bad situation. Their owner was
going to put them down but was encouraged to bring them to the SPCA instead. They were brought to our adoption centre for surrender. They were both males just over 4 months old and were Airedale/ Husky cross dogs which means they will grow to be very large dogs.
Both were very outgoing and although had been around children needed more social-ization. Having been inseparable for most of their lives, Horton and Thorton wanted to be near each other and were very unhappy when separated.
It is usually tough enough to adopt one dog to a family let alone two but the Clarke family of Pink Mountain welcomed the two friend to their home.
Another Happy Ending...or as in this case, another Happy Beginning for these two friends.
If you are looking to adopt a pet, please contact your local SPCA shelter.Fort St John and area - visit the shelter at 9311 81 Ave or call (250) 785-7722.

“Where lives are priority #1”
By Central EmporiumFORT ST. JOHN – Imagine a box around yourself and all of your life
everyone that you’ve ever encountered has put something into your box: a thought, an expectation, an idea that something has to be done in a certain way. Now we are all walking around trying to meet all of the expectations and do everything right according to everything that has filled up our “box” in our life-time. We have developed boundaries and fences around ourselves based on the belief systems of everyone around us.
Byron Katie challenges your belief system by asking the question, “Is it true?” Her book, “Loving What Is”, helps you identify whose belief systems are controlling your life. The key is to adopt our own belief systems!
At Central Emporium, we carry a wide variety of books that will provide you with the tools to make positive changes in your life.
Adopt “The Four Agreements” into your life and change your life forever. This book by Don Miguel Ruiz reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering. This powerful code of conduct can rapidly transform our lives to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love.
The world today is filled with stress, anxiety and depression. We fill ourselves with guilt, anger & regret—manifesting illness inside our own bodies. Louise Hay’s book, “You Can Heal Your Life” helps you break down what you may need to deal with in your life that is contributing to illnesses or aches & pains in your body.
Find your authentic self in 28 days with Denise Linn, “Soul Coaching”, an in-depth clearing and cleansing of the different aspects of your life; mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. This book is for you if you want to know: who you are, why you’re here or what your mission is.
Marianne Williamson offers 21 spiritual lessons for surrendering your weight forever with her book, “A Course in Weight Loss”. She helps us identify why we hold onto body weight in certain areas of our bodies. What emotional issues are you holding onto that are preventing you from shedding weight?
Bring peace to any situation with “Waves of Blue Light—Heal the Heart and Free the Soul”. Marilyn Dometraschuk, thru her life experiences, will teach you how to bring great things into your life thru positive affirmations. You’ll be captivated with her unique poetry.
Give your children a head start in life! Teach your children how to cope with daily emotional issues. Empower them with positive
thinking habits and teach them when they are young to come up with positive solutions to life’s daily challenges. Give them confidence and self-esteem with these books:
• Unstoppable Me – Wayne Dyer & Kristina Tracy• It’s Not What You’ve Got – Wayne Dyer & Kristina Tracy• Incredible You – Wayne Dyer & Kristina Tracy• Tiger-Tiger, Is It True – Byron Katie & Hans Wilhelm• I Think, I Am – Louise Hay & Kristina Tracy
Change your thoughts, change your life with the help of these books
By Kyla CorpuzFORT ST. JOHN - FORT ST. JOHN – A single call to
the Nurses Helpline saved a girl contemplating suicide and advice from a pharmacist over the phone prevented a prescription mix-up.
These are just a couple of stories Gihan De Silva, cham-pion at Health Link BC, presented to council on Aug. 2. He’s touring the North Peace region raising awareness about the use and availability of Health Link BC.
“What we are trying to do is go to the grass root level and increase awareness,” said De Silva.
In 2008 the province embraced a number of health ser-
vices: Nursing Services, Dietitian Services, BC Health Guide, Pharmacist-After-Hours Service and Health and Seniors Information and put them all under one “umbrella.”
Health Link BC is available by mobile or landline phone (8-1-1), online (HealthLinkBC.ca) or print (BCHealthGuide Handbook).
De Silva said the benefit of the service is to educate the public about health issues so when they arrive to the doctor, they already have a sense of what their symptoms mean.
“By trying to educate the public about health issues, we are trying to make healthier life choices.”
He added, as most people turn to Google to get their medical facts, Health Link BC provides “trusted” health information and advice.
Some may be weary about who is on the other ended of the line but Gihan said that the sources are all local, with offices in Victoria and the Lower Mainland, and registered nurses, pharmacists and dieticians.
Mayor Bruce Lantz said he would “highly recommend” the service as it directed him to the emergency room, where he found he had a kidney infection.
Councilor Lori Ackerman said she was “very satisfied with the service,” and has made use of it on occasion.

By Jill EarlDAWSON CREEK – Kristy Howes had been preparing
all her life for the right opportunity, and when luck finally stepped in, she was ready. Howes, a singer/songwriter from Fort St. John picked up her skills naturally as a child and practiced them all throughout high school.
“I always sang, and then I started taking lessons,” Howes said.
She even attended Berkley College in Boston Massachusetts, a prestigious music school whose alumni include, Rivers Cuomo, Diana Krall, and Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks. Howes also went to school for social work just incase a music career didn’t work out for her. After working as a social worker for a year she met with an LA publishing company in Vancouver interested in having her write songs for them. After only one meeting, Howes signed a contract with the company in August 2009, an experience she still can’t believe.
“It just doesn’t really happen for a little small town Canadian girl to get signed for a publishing deal out of LA,” she said.
In October 2009, Howes was in Prince George shooting independent music videos for a few of her songs, the country duo Brooks & Dunn were also in Prince George doing a per-formance. It was by sheer coincidence that Kristy was staying at the same hotel as the duo, and that Cal, a bus driver for Brooks & Dunn, would see her with guitar in hand and invite her out along with the rest of the group later that night. Kristy came prepared to the bar, not sure of who would be there, she carried a small boom box under her coat, armed with her
songs and ready to play for anyone that would listen. “I took it in there not knowing, am I going to see Brooks
& Dunn or am I not going to see Brooks & Dunn? I had no idea. I felt so ridiculous at the time, but I totally don’t regret it now,” she said.
Cal, who Kristy says she’ll never forget as long as she lives, introduced her to Trey Gray, her future producer. Trey, then drummer for Brooks & Dunn and now a drummer for Ronnie Dunn, greeted her with a hug and the two talked at length, until about 1am. After hearing 30 seconds of one of her songs Trey offered Kristy the opportunity she had waited her whole life for.
“I played him 30 seconds of my song, there was an agree-ment right there I that I would do a production deal with him,” she said.
“I phoned that night and actually quit my job over voice-mail, saying ‘I’ll be late tomorrow and this is my two weeks notice.”
The pair met the following Tuesday to discuss her album, and Kristy was in the recording studio by January.
“We had a general idea of what we wanted to do. We have a really good working relationship. We click on a music level, and he’s one of my best friends. We have the same values in music...we both had the same goals and vision for me. I’m so lucky to have him.” Howes said.
Besides singing, Howes also wrote all 10 songs on her debut album, December Sessions, which came out in August 2010. She draws inspiration for songs from experiences her friends have gone through and also gets ideas from fictional characters on T.V, but most of her songs are about her own life.
“The majority of my songs are definitely personal experi-ences, there close,” she says.
Her difficult family situation growing up and rocky rela-tionship with her parents also are sources of inspiration, she’s not afraid to share her past with audiences and fellow
songwriters. “A lot of us are damaged people,” Kristy laughs, “you’re
music has to come from somewhere.”Her home situation may have not been ideal as a child,
but Kristy is extremely grateful for the support given by her grandparents.
“My grandma’s been phenomenal though, my grandparents have been front and centre for absolutely every performance pretty much that I’ve ever done my entire life”
Splitting her time between Fort St. John, Vancouver, and Nashville, Howes is working on her second album (which is due out before Christmas), touring, and when she’s not taking in much needed down time is volunteering for the Huntington’s Society of Canada.
Huntington’s disease is a genetic disorder that effects muscle coordination, and it’s a cause that hits particularly close to home for her. Her producer Trey was diagnosed with Huntington’s in 2005, Kristy says he is expected to die within the next three years.
She says he only started producing because he knew that with the progression of his disease his body would no longer be able to keep up with the physically demanding job of drum-ming. Kristy’s debut album was the first full-length record Trey produced. Kristy has a 10-album production deal with Trey, which she can renew at anytime. When he passes Trey’s close friends, Mike and Neil have agreed to produce her.
“I hate that I can’t change his fate. He’s given me so much, so I try to give back as much as I can,” Kristy says.
Despite her producer’s condition, Kristy always the opti-mist tries to think positively.
“We try to focus on the music, we have so much fun when we’re making it. And he’s doing what he loves,” she says
“I’m very very lucky...and really fortunate to have the con-tacts and connections I do. I love what I do. A lot of people don’t actually get to do this for a living, so I’m very fortunate that I can for the moment. I’m definitely trying not to take it for granted and I’m loving every minute of it...When it comes to my music I have a really really excellent group of people around me and I really couldn’t ask for anything better.”
See Kristy perform live at the Dawson Creek Art Gallery Friday August 12. Go to http://www.huntingtonsociety.ca to learn more about Huntington’s disease.

How it started for singer and songwriter Kristy Howes
By Kyla CorpuzFORT ST. JOHN - FORT ST. JOHN – After a number of
telephone scams were reported to the RCMP last month, Sgt. Steve Perret is urging residents to be very weary of any phone calls “too good to be true.”
The most recent occurrence came from an outpouring of emails from the United Kingdom claiming to give inheritance money.
“When you’re solicited and you’re asked to send money up front, some warning bells should be going off in your head that it’s probably a scam,” said Perret.
It starts with the bait: phone calls from relatives in jail seek-ing bail money, a prize that can only be attainable after sending a processing fee or a massive amount of inheritance waiting to be received.
The types of fraud vary, but the RCMP has noticed a trend of how the imposters are reeling in the money. According to a news release by the RCMP, frauds use financial institutions like Western Union or PayPal.
“If you throw enough fish hooks into the water, you’re even-tually going to catch a fish. They throw these things mass and the odd time somebody bites and sends them money and that’s how they operate.”
Perret said that the culprits don’t just target one demographic; a single email address can be solicited to many sources therefore people from all walks of life and age groups can fall victim to it.
The cunningness of the individuals or groups who organize these scams usually hide behind fake company names and oper-ate in foreign countries making it difficult for police to investi-gate and almost impossible to retrieve lost funds.
A common scam that targets the elderly people are phone calls from a “distant relative,” looking for money.
“There are legitimate cases, but the vast majority of the time it is a scam.”
Perret advises people to do their research. If they’re uncertain about a company, Google is a helpful tool to narrow down if the company is real or fake.
“You need to be aware of what the common scams are and take steps to safe guard your personal information,” he said.
Most scams go unreported. It seems to only be those who lose money that report it. Because of the volume of this type of crime, it’s extremely difficult for the RCMP to undergo inves-tigations for each.
“We can’t investigate every single fraud that’s reported to us, because there’s literally hundreds and thousands of these going on in a year. When someone loses money we do investigate it,” said Perret.
The Fort St. John RCMP is working closely with the Commercial Crime Unit out of Surrey, regarding the most recent fraud occurrences.

notice of power interruption– boundary lake and goodlow
3017
Time: 7:00 am - 8:00 pm When: Tuesday, August 16 and Wednesday, August 17
We will be making electrical system improvements in the communities of Boundary Lake and Goodlow on August 16 and 17. To ensure the safety of our work crews, it will be necessary to interrupt electrical service for approximately 13 hours, from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm both days. The areas affected are the communities of Boundary Lake and Goodlow, located to the Northeast of Fort St. John.
Please protect all sensitive equipment. We recognize the inconvenience this may cause, and will restore service safely and as efficiently as possible.
Shorten restoration time during a power outage by switching lights and electrical equipment off. Wait one hour after power is restored before switching on multiple appliances to allow the system time to stabilize.
Prepare for outages and stay informed by visiting bchydro.com/outages or bchydro.com/mobile from your handheld device. Please call 1 888 POWERON (1 888 769 3766) if you experience any electrical difficulties or for more information.
For 50 years, BC Hydro has been providing clean, reliable electricity to our customers. Today we are planning for the next 50 years by investing in new projects, upgrading existing facilities and working with our customers to conserve energy through Power Smart.

By the Charlie Lake Conservation SocietyCHARLIE LAKE – Look up! We have
one of the best ring-side seats in the world for viewing the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. Dancing lights of green, white, blue, and if we are lucky, violet and red appear during our dark, clear nights. Skies in northeast BC have shows lasting from minutes to hours every other night on average!
These mysterious lights were welcomed by our northern ancestors as signs from Gods and spirits of loved ones. Whistling at the lights could bring them down to dance with you!
So what do we really know about the science of the Aurora? Our sun gives off high-energy charged particles that travel out into space at high speed in a stream known as the
solar wind. Some of this solar wind reaches earth’s magnetic field. -As these high-energy charged particles enter the earth’s upper atmosphere, they encounter atoms of oxygen and nitrogen at altitudes from 20 to 200 miles above the earth’s surface.
These particles collide with the gases in our atmosphere and start to glow, producing a spectacular light show. The color of the aurora depends on which atom is struck and the altitude of the meeting. For example, oxygen up to 150 miles in altitude produces the colour green but above 150 miles in altitude, oxygen strikes produce the colour red. Nitrogen up to 60 miles produces a hue of blue but above 60 miles, we witness purple and violet colours.
The ghostly flickering of the Northern Lights is caused by explosions of magnetic energy. All of the magnetic and electrical forces react with one another in constantly shifting combinations. These shifts and flows can be seen as the auroras “dance,” moving along with the atmospheric currents.
If you are patient and willing to get away from the bright lights of the city, you will enjoy the best light show nature has to offer – and so close to home!

By Kyla CorpuzFORT ST. JOHN - The Cultural Centre is taking on a new
learning approach for preschoolers: one that is proven to enhance children’s learning ability.
Play Arts Preschool is the first of it’s kind in the North Peace region said Susan McGarvey, Arts Space and Play Arts Preschool coordinator at the Cultural Centre. Play Arts inter-twines basic learning with music, dance and theatre.
Through McGarvey’s research she found many children were missing out on the opportunity to participate in the arts in Fort St. John.
What sets this preschool apart from others is its objective is to engage children in a learning initiative that is focused on the arts.
“There is a bowl of amazing talent to take from in FSJ, but kids are missing out on the very basic level, which is where they need to get it the most. They’re going to develop that love of art from the beginning at a young age,” said McGarvey.
Multiple studies show that possessing musical abilities strengthens a child’s learning aptitude and puts them on a path to success in high school and post secondary.
“A 10-year study indicates that students who study music achieve higher test scores, regardless of socioeconomic back-ground,” according to a doctor at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Though it may be the first arts-based preschool in northern B.C., it’s a popular concept nationally and internationally.
“There are fine arts preschools throughout the country that are very successful by immersing those little brains into this creative way of solving problems, expressing themselves and getting more self confidence,” said McGarvey.
In a 2010 report compiled by Hills Strategies Research called Music Education in Canadian Schools, 83 per cent of B.C. schools ranked building students’ self-esteem and confidence as the number one benefit of music education.
Bettyanne Hampton, executive director at the North Peace Cultural Centre, and McGarvey presented the Play Arts Preschool on Canada Day, and according to them the response
has been positive.
“[The community was] excited, not only to have this opportu-nity but by the caliber and quality of instructors and curriculum,” said Hampton.
The instructors are all professional musicians and artists, and the preschool leaders are experienced and have their Early Childhood Education.
“I think the community will benefit immensely from it, I mean, we are the musical capital of the north. Here is one more measure of quality that supports that,” said Hampton.
The preschool will be held in the Cultural Centre, with many rooms and spaces to utilize, like the theatre. It starts in September and runs on the same calendar as School District 60. So far the preschool is only accepting 20 kids.
