Nobody likes to learn that they are being watched, listened to, or followed.. Unfortunately, governments andother institutions these days have the power to hold significant records on individuals. However, there aremany means at a spy's disposal for keeping a very low profile, or even ducking out of the system altogether. As well as this, any individual may want to learn how to avoid being attacked , be it physically or viaelectronic means: banking, billing and the like.

Author's Note: I have always been fascinated by the way that people put a

label on individua ls who pertain to be spies, secret agents, assassins andexecutioners. The label appears to elevate them, as if they exist in adifferent dimension. Yet they are all human; they have mothers, fathers, wives and children. Most people who work for intelligence agencies do soin the belief that they are helping to protect their country.A member of anIsraeli "Kidon" team may fly to Paris to assassinate what they term to be aPalestinian terrorist and then fly back to Israel and spend the weekendplaying with his children. For some18 years, when I was a member of theBritishSAS, I always seemed to have a weapon in my hand. On oneoccasion, the prime minister sent me and a colleague to help free thehostages from a hijacked Lufthansa aircraft. Five days later, three of the fourhijackers were dead, and most of the hostages were released alive. I ustwent hom e to m y wife and tw o you ng children. This was n ot an isolatedincident. I have always carried a weapon and used it in many countries.Ask me ifI am ever worried that my past will one day catch up with me'ind I will answer not really. Nevertheless,I keep a weapon handy and I do141kesome basic precautions. So, a spy, a secret agent, an assassin,r~xc cutio ner r just p lain John Doe, shou ld take precautions to protectvourself in everyday life.

.SECURITYINTHE HOMEA spy is at his most vulnerable when approaching or leaving his home.Anyone looking for him wi ll kn ow that at one time or another he canalways be found there. Home is where he relaxes and drops his guard; it isalso a place where he holds most of the documents and information thatestablish his identity. Home is also a place he shares with his loved ones.He will keep this in m ind and anticipate any intrusion into his personal lifeand home. Above all, he will always- always - isten to his senses andgut feelings - if something does not feel right, then it usually isn't. He maythink about the following self-preservation points:

spy s car is an extension of his home. It is the m eans by which hetravels to and from home. This makes it equally vulnerable to attack Manypeople have been killed by car bombs and there will doubtless be manymore. t is a destructive form of attack and one that is fairly simple to

achieve. Car bombs can be triggered by pressure, pull, speed, breaking orany electric device within the car, such as turning the radio on. They canalso be triggered by various radio devices that are remote from the car.

A professional assassin would practise on a similar make and model of

When checking for a car bomb, the most likel y place is around or near the driver s seat.

vehicle to that used by his target, to ensure that when he places theexplosives, they are almost impossible to find. These basic rules willminimize the threat.

Most assassins who use car bombs always place the explosive close to

the driver s seat, so the spy will make sure that he always checks this areathoroughly. He will always garage his car when it is not being used. Hewil l alwa ys check his car before getting in. He ll check the bonnet, underneath the car and under the seat. He ll go to both windo ws and lookat the oppos ite door for signs of tampering or for any wires. He ll carry outa sweep every time he uses his car, because if he is under observationthis approach will often deter anyone from planting a bomb. The enemycan attack the car in four d ifferent ways:

b Using a device p laced directly on the vehicle tha t isdetonated on entry or ignition.

b Using a device placed on the vehicle that is detonated whilein transit by radio control.Placing a large bomb along the route the spy wi ll travel na drainage ditch or on an embankment.

b By firing a rocket-propelled grenade at the vehicle.

Finally, if the spy ever gets attacked in the home and manages to gain

the advantage over his assailant, he will make sure that they never comeback a second time. Self-preservation means fighting back and winning.
