    Description:

    This course provides a broad overview of the literature of the Iberian Peninsula, especially Castile, from the11th to the 17th centuries. We will focus on the intersection of Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures.

    Each week we will begin by discussing the two readings and the crtica assignment for the week. At thebeginning of each lecture we write a short comentario (ten minute ungraded writing exercise in Spanish) ona theme related to the reading and that is connected to the crtica. During a shortpresentacin de texto wewill further discuss terminologa that must be put into practice in writing the crtica and that will be tested onthe final exam. At the lectures end, students will turn in comentarios for attendance and participation credit.

    During discussion section, students will be responsible to explaining theircrtica to their peers and forexplaining partners crtica to the rest of the class. Discussion section leaders will conduct activitiesdesigned to reinforce content presented in lectures and readings, and to improve critical thinking andwriting skills.

    This is the dictionary of the Real Academia Espaola de la Lengua (Dicc. RAE). It contains manydefinitions for words found in the readings, especially usages from the medieval and early modern periods(1200-1700) that do not appear in most student dictionaries.

    Requirements:

    30% Crtica (7/8): Due before discussion section on Blackboard. Crtica will be graded either 1 or 0, andthe lowest 1 will be dropped. Print one copy and bring to discussion section for your ownreference only; you need not hand it in. Your online version will be assigned a grade in Blackboard.

    In order to receive credit (a grade of 1/1) for the assignment:

    write in full, coherent sentences combined into coherent paragraphs (not lists). answerthe specific question posed in the syllabus. provide at least 3 quotations from the text to support your observations. Cite author and page

    number (for prose) or verse/stanza numbers (poetry).

    apply at least 2 terms from the terminologa associated with the reading. enclose quotations within your own language as part of your own sentence (see model Crtica

    in Blackboard/Course Documents. Edit quotation if grammar demands, putting changes in[brackets] to indicate edits.

    20% Lecture attendance and participation: the in-class Comentarios will be collected at the end ofeach lecture to register attendance and participation. Students are allowed to miss 3 lectures (forany reason), after which they lose 5 points per lecture missed up to a total of 20 points.

    15% Discussion sectionattendance: Students are allowed to miss 2 sections (for any reason), afterwhich they will lose 5 points per section missed up to a total of 15 points.
