Section 1 - Presentation

This guide describes the various installation accessories available for our 3G antennas. Each of them is delivered with an installation drawing. Depending on antenna type, the attachment of the installation accessories is done either on pivot points at the back of the antenna or on mounting plates at top and bottom of the antenna. Pictures below help to understand the difference between these two versions:

Mounting by pivot points at the back

Mounting by plates at top and bottom

The table next page provides a sum-up of all available accessories. Section 2 of this document describes the accessories dedicated to antenna with pivot mounting points. Most of such antennas have two pivots at top and bottom on the back of the antenna. But some of them with a big height have a third pivot at the middle of the back. The pictures in this section 2 describe the accessories when antenna has three pivot points. For the ones with two pivot points, the middle components should not be taken in account. Section 3 describes the accessories dedicated to antenna with mounting plates at top and bottom. Section 4 provides general guide lines for installation and describes how to set the electrical tilt.

Section 4 - Installation

4.1. - General guidelines Each antenna is delivered fully assembled in a single packing carton. Do not stack more than three units high. The antenna has breather/drain holes at its bottom and should be installed with these holes facing downwards. Do not install the antenna up side down with connectors at the top. The drain holes will be in a wrong position and the downtilt will no longer operate. Specific antennas should be requested for installation with connectors at the top. The strength of the mounting location and its anchoring (pipe …) must be checked by a competent structural engineer. Keep in mind all safety rules during installation. Do not stand in front of a working antenna and refer to the operator of the site for the safe working distance from live antennas. Avoid prolonged exposure to high levels of E-M radiation; refer to nationally agreed safety limits for exposure. Do not rely on antennas as climbing aids. Dispose in an environmentally friendly manner.

4.2. - Unpacking and checks Check that the delivery packaging is not damaged. Open the box, unpack the antenna system, lay all components on a clean and protected area. If optional hardware is to be used, do the same with its packaging. Check carefully that everything has been taken out before discarding the packaging. Ensure that all installation hardware has been received. Use parts lists provided here as follows for this clarification. Ensure that the antenna has not been damaged in transit; inspect its shroud and connectors. The antenna is delivered with protective caps on all the connectors. Do not remove these caps until the antenna is ready to connect the fitting cables, once antenna has been positioned and fixed. Look at the label at the back of the antenna to check that it is the correct type that is intended to be installed. Note the serial number written on this label for future records. The high IMP performance of the antenna depends a lot on the cleanliness of the coaxial connectors. If any requires cleaning then this must be done with a good contact cleaner which does not leave traces of oil or grease. If necessary wipe with clean and soft material, free from grease and loose strands of fibre.

4.3 - Antenna installation At any step of installation, the torque settings are: 20 Nm for M8 30 Nm for M10 We recommend setting the electrical tilt to the maximum before handling the antenna so the electrical tilt indicator at the bottom of the antenna will be protected. Assemble one clamp of each pole bracket to the antenna mounting points, by the M8 screws. Attach a hauling rope to the antenna at the top clamp level and hoist it into required position. Take extreme care not to damage the antenna connectors when handling onto the support structure. Position the antenna, fit the remaining clamps and bolt loosely. Swivel the antenna so that it points roughly in the desired direction. Lift and fit a pointing device into position. Point the antenna to the specified pointing direction. Tighten the M10 nuts evenly and in small steps to lock the antenna into position. Do not over tighten. Use second nut on each bolt to lock tight and secure. Make sure that the mounting brackets assemblies are pointing in the same direction to minimise stress on the antenna. This can be confirmed if the hinge bracket screws are loosened a little, the panel should move gently and freely to its position without any stress. The pointing device and the hauling rope can now be removed.

Page 20: 0900181-00

Issue 05Page 20/20Installation Guide for 3G Antennas

Connection: Important: The antenna positioning should be completed before connecting cables. Fit the jumper cables to the antenna connectors. The "+" and the "-" coaxial ports are interchangeable unless otherwise specified by the operator's requirements. The connection to the antenna should ensure that there is no undue stress on the antenna or its connectors. Connection shall be in accordance with operator's standard specifications. Form the cables into a pre formed "swan neck" and comply with the minimum bending radius specified by the cable manufacturer. Clamp and strap the cables to the support structure. Avoid any direct contact of the cable to the antenna surface. Electrical tilt adjustment: Set the electrical tilt according to the operator guidelines for this installation. The electrical tilt on the antenna is changed by turning the adjustment screw with a 10 mm spanner. Turn clockwise to increase the tilt on the antenna.

The tilt indicator has colour coded spaces. When the limit between two colours is aligned with the bottom plate, the electrical tilt is set to the value indicated just below the plate. The colour markings ensure that it is easy to check that the correct tilt level is set when viewing from a distance. Check and record the antenna return loss on each port and the isolation between ports, if relevant. Waterproof the coaxial connectors. We recommend the use of dedicated devices containing gel material rather than using tape or mastic. Care must be taken when choosing such a device that it fits to the length of the hexagonal nut of the 7/16 connectors on the jumpers. Give a final inspection of the installation and document the antenna installation with antenna type number and serial number, pointing direction, mechanical tilt, measured return loss.

4.4 - Maintenance The antenna system should be inspected annually. Particular attention must be given to mounting hardware, nuts and bolts, connector waterproofing. Replace as necessary. During this inspection, clearance of the breather holes must be checked and the antenna shroud should be cleaned with a soft detergent. A return loss measurement of the whole antenna system should be carried out and compared to the previous record. Antenna repairs are not possible without major de-commissioning of the antenna. Any antenna considered faulty should be returned to us for assessment, repair and refurbishment as necessary.

Adjustment screw (10 mm spanner)

Indicator shows that tilt is set to 8.8 degree
