Have you ever had a summer job? It’s a great way to earn money while you’re still at school or university. We spoke to five students about their experiences.

“I had a great summer job last year – I worked at a theme park. I was an attendant on a children’s train ride. To be honest, the work was sometimes a bit boring, and I didn’t get much money. But I got a free pass to the theme park for the whole summer, so I was very happy!”

“I got a holiday job in a restaurant in my town. I expected to be a good waiter because I’m very polite. Unfortunately, I wasn’t very good at my job. I wrote some of the food items down wrongly and the customers got the wrong food. At the end of the summer, my boss told me not to come back!”

“Over the summer, I worked as a website tester for an online company. I filled in a form and the company sent me work by email. I didn’t earn much money, but I liked the job because it was easy and I could work from my own bedroom. Sometimes, I even worked in my pyjamas!”

VOCABULARY: *vlogger – Vlogger (Kurzform für Video Blogger)

Forget about footballers, actors and pop stars. The dream job for many young people is now a social media influencer. Influencers use their social media posts to show their followers new products. You don’t need qualifications and you can earn a lot of money. But is it really as good as it sounds?

It’s true that influencers can earn a lot of money. Famous vloggers* and YouTubers can earn 100,000 to 250,000 Euros per post. But most influencers with fewer followers earn much less. Some don’t earn any money at all.

We spoke to Nia Simons, a fashion influencer with 200,000 followers. She told us that the job can be difficult to begin with.

“It’s hard work and you don’t earn money straightaway. If you have fewer than 1,000 followers, companies won’t pay you anything. I didn’t earn anything from social media for two years.”

Reports suggest that influencers with 1,000 to 100,000 followers can earn between 50 and 1,000 Euros per post. But most people will never earn this. A lot of influencers have another job so that they can buy the things they need. We asked Nia why it was so hard to earn money as an influencer.

“It’s because of the competition,” she explained. “A lot of people are doing this and most of them have to work for free to begin with.”

So, how can you become a successful influencer? Nia says it’s important to understand the business before you start.

“I didn’t expect this to be easy. I worked long hours in the first year, and I didn’t see my friends very often. But now I have my dream job, so it was worth it.”
