8  But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9  The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. 10  But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. 11  Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12  looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!

8  But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. But do not let this one fact escape your notice

do not let - the present imperative “let” with “not” is used in the Greek text, forbidding the continuance of an action or state already going on – translation: But this one thing, stop allowing it to be hidden from you (Wuest)

beloved - divinely-loved ones

that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day

note that this attribute is “with the Lord”

like – hos – lit: is as

Psalm 90:4 For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it passes by, or as a watch in the night.

9  The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness

is slow – to delay or loiter, to be tardy (present tense)

“He (the Lord) waits, but is never slow, is never late” - Hiebert

but is patient toward you

But - alla- strong contrast

is patient – longsuffering (present tense) – its toward you!

see 1 Peter 3:20

note the special emphasis of God’s personal relationship

9  The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance

wishing - willing, wanting – the idea is “not willing” in verse 9

perish – to perish eternally or to be deprived of eternal life

see Luke 13:3, John 3:16, John 10:28

repentance - a change of mind - is used in the N.T. to indicate a change of mind in respect of sin, of God, and of self Chafer

see 1 Tim 2:4, Rom 2:4, Ezek 33:11

10  But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief

What is the day of the Lord?

Now the phrase ‘the day of the Lord’ is a time from the Rapture, followed by the Tribulation to the very end of this present heavens and earth. The beginning of that time of the ‘day of the Lord’ will come as a surprise to all, and many will be surprised by subsequent events as well, even though they were predicted thousands of years ago. – Vern

will come like a thief

will come (future, indicative, active) – see John 2:4

thief – lit: to steal – the idea is that it is unexpected see 1 Thess 5:1-4, Luke 12:39-40

10  But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.

Three things will occur at the end of the day of the Lord

a.in which the heavens will pass away with a roar

probably refers to the atmosphere and stellar heaven

see Matt 24:35, Mark 13:31, Luke 21:33

b. the elements will be destroyed with intense heat

elements - the substance of the material world (atoms, etc.)

c. the earth and its works will be burned up

The works that are therein seems to denote the varied achievements of men related to this world - Hiebert

11  Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,

Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way

What are the all these things ?

what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness

Peter believed that an understanding of the future should motivate the believer to live a holy life now. Constable

We have seen this idea before in the following verses1 Peter 1:13-16

12  looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!

looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God

see 1 Cor 1:7; hastening – the idea is to desiring earnestly

What is “the day of God”?

The day of God is evidently an identification of the eternity yet future when the new heavens and the new earth will have been created – Chafer

see 1 Cor 15:23-28

because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burningand the elements will melt with intense heat

this is the same statement we saw in verse 10
