2‘Circle: An International Survey of Constructive Art?’ was a publication edited by Leslie Martin together with artists Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo. The aim of Circle was to show those works of architecture, painting, and sculpture that appeared to share a common idea and spirit. Nicholson’s paintings of the time reflect his affinity with Mondrian.

THE HERO OF SWITZERLAND ILLUSTRATORS’ COLLECTIVE
The Hero of Switzerland is a group of illustrators that began by meeting in the pub on our site, and have grown into a larger artistic group. Their work shows that the artistic history of the site continues to be part of its cultural identity.
A CULTURAL CENTRE
Damien Hirst produced much of his iconic work near to the Hero of Switzerland. Artists including Hirst used to meet and drink there. The creative nature of the Hero of Switzerland can still be seen through artists and illustrators that still associate themselves with the public house.
A redevelopment of the public house as part of a larger development could see it take on more roles as a cultural and artistic centre. Part of our proposal for the site would be a new public house, but this could be made more valuable to the community by incorporating a wider programme, with events spaces where other cultural events could be held.

This simple analysis took the ‘vibrancy’ of key areas in the wider site and abstracted them into simple colour combinations. This exercise was a useful way to understand the differences between areas around the site, whilst the colour palettes themselves may go on to influence the design.
