Dear Scrappers:

WHOO HOO! It’s time for Mickey Mania—

the time each year when we celebrate

the magic in all of us! This year I have

created 27 new Disney Designs, featuring

some of your most beloved characters,

including Mickey and his gang, Tigger,

Tinkerbell, Chip n’ Dale, the Muppets,

Jake the Neverland Pirate, Cars and

Nemo and friends.

You’ll find several layouts that focus on

taking pictures because that’s what

scrappers like doing best—whether they

are selfies, snapchat, instagram—I’ve got

you covered. You’ll also find a several

layouts for your Disney Trip: The Teacups,

Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Animal King-

dom, Disney Circus, The Seas, Downtown

Disney. Of course, all of these layouts can

be used outside of Disney. Just a little

imagination is required!

I had many requests for gymnastics lay-

outs...so I created two for girls (floor exer-

cises and balance beam) and one for

boys. Also, several of you asked for a kit

that could be used for one of the running

events at Disney. Your wish was my com-

mand.

A few more Disney kits will be featured in

August-September since I didn’t have

time to complete all the designs I had

planned for.

The History of

Gymnastics

The sport of Gymnastics dates far beyond the An-cient Olympic Games. Ac-robats entertained Egyptian nobility about 7,000 years ago and, judging by ancient frescoes, acrobats vaulted over the backs of bulls on the island of Crete when the Minoan civilization flourished, beginning about 2,700 BC. The Chinese some 2000 years before Ancient Olympic Games practiced ritual mass Gym-nastic exercises as part of the art of “Wushu.” The term “gymnastics” de-rives from the Greek word for naked “gymnos.” In an-cient Greece, male athletes trained and competed in the nude. Physical training took place in the palestra, a square, walled, open-air area equipped with chang-ing rooms and baths. Activ-ities included running, jumping, weightlifting, throwing, wrestling, and swimming, all classified as gymnastics.

Growing All Too Fast

Since the 1980s and the 2000s,

there have been many animated

characters which are either junior

versions (e.g., children, nephews,

nieces, or protégés) or younger ver-

sions (i.e., the original characters

presented as children) of other

well-established characters. This

trend, often referred to as the

"babyfication" of shows, was kicked

off by the 1984 series Jim Hen-

son's Muppet Babies, which was

based on a sequence in the (live-

action) film The Muppets Take

Manhattan. An earlier example of

younger versions of existing car-

toon characters, however, would be

Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd from

the 1944 cartoon The Old Grey

Hare, which features Bugs and

Elmer as babies (as well as very old

characters). The same concept was

used in a cartoon featuring an el-

derly Foghorn Leghorn and Barn-

yard Dawg who each have a grand-

son, and in a planned scene in the

Three Stooges short Three Little

Pigskins in which each stooge has

an identical son.

Disney has baby versions of their

characters Mickey Mouse, Minnie

Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck,

Goofy, Pluto, Clarabelle Cow, Pete,

Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Ee-

yore, Snow White, Cinderella, Auro-

ra, Ariel, Belle, Princess Jasmine,

Mulan, Pocahontas, Tiana, Rapun-

zel, Stitch, Dumbo, Bambi, Thump-

er, Lady and the Tramp, Patch, Ma-

rie, Simba and Nala in their fran-

chise, Disney Babies.

is an Annie Award-winning mu-

sical and interactive American

animated television series

shown on Disney Junior. It is

based on Disney's Peter Pan

franchise, which in turn is

based on the famous book and

play by British author J. M. Bar-

rie. It is the first Disney Junior

original show following the

switch from Playhouse Disney.

The title character Jake was

previously voiced by Colin Ford,

and then later by Cameron

Boyce, while Izzy was voiced for

the first three seasons by Madi-

son Pettis and Cubby was

voiced by Jonathan Morgan

Heit. The series is created by

Disney veteran Bobs Ganna-

way, whose works include an-

other Disney Junior series,

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and

films such as Secret of the

Wings, The Pirate Fairy and

Planes: Fire & Rescue.

The series focuses on a band of

young pirates consisting of

Jake, Izzy, Cubby, and their par-

rot Skully, who continuously

spend their days competing

against Captain Hook and Mr.

Smee for treasure.
