The term legend is freely tossed around in athletics, but few are actually worthy of the tag. Rollins women’s basketball coach Glenn Wilkes Jr., now in his 29th year, is one of the few.

Wilkes is the winningest coach in Sunshine State Conference history, winning a record 13 regular season titles and eight SSC Tournament Championships. His career record of 628-206 heading into the 2014-15 season ranks seventh best among active coaches in Division II and 13th all-time. He has the ninth most victories in the history of Division II and ranks 41st all-time covering all divisions. Wilkes’ winning percentage (.753) is the 26th best among active coaches

in all NCAA Divisions.

Wilkes is a nine-time SSC Coach of the Year and was named Division II WBCA National Coach of the Year after the 2005-06 season. In 2007, Wilkes was honored as the Sunshine State Conference Silver Anniversary Top Coach of the First 25-Years.

Rollins has won 20 or more games in 23 seasons under Wilkes, tied for the second most all-time.

During Wilkes’ tenure, the Tars have earned 13 trips to the NCAA Tournament and in 2012 won the South Region Tournament for the first time in school history. While at the Elite Eight, Rollins advanced to the Final Four, the furthest any SSC team has ever gone in the tournament.

Wilkes has coached six All-America honorees (Kim Tayrien, Kenya Storr, Jill Razor, Joslyn Giles, Larissa McDonough, Ashley Jones), and four SSC Players of the Year (Razor-twice, Storr, Giles). Tars have been named First Team All-SSC 28-times under Wilkes’ watch.

Wilkes was named the head coach in 1986 and led the Tars to a 21-6 record in his first season. As an encore, the Tars captured their first SSC regular season and conference tournament titles, posting a record of 26-3 on the year. Rollins again raised the trophy the next three seasons and in 1995 earned the program’s first bid to NCAA postseason play.

The program again reached new heights in 2000 as the Tars won their third straight SSC title, advanced to the South Region Championship game and finished the year ranked 10th in the nation. In 2001, Rollins was ranked as high at sixth in the country, led by senior Jill Razor who became the Tars’ all-time leading scorer.

Rollins was again in the national spotlight in 2004, winning the SSC regular season and tournament titles and hosting the South Region Tournament as the No. 1 seed.

Wilkes 2005-06 campaign re-wrote the record books as the Tars completed the school’s and SSC’s first-ever undefeated sea-son, going 26-0. Rollins easily captured the SSC regular season title and advanced to the tournament finals before falling in a heartbreaker. They earned a berth into the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament, but were bounced out in the first round.

Wilkes filled up his personal trophy case after being named SSC Coach of the Year for the ninth time, South Region Coach of the Year and, for the first time in his career, WBCA NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year.

The 2011-12 Tars season, however, is the one that will go down in the record books. It started with Rollins winning its 13th Sunshine State Conference regular season championship, seventh SSC Tournament title and, for the first time in school history, the NCAA Division II South Region Championship. The Tars did so as the top seed on their home floor, culminating in a thrilling victory over Valdosta State in the final game. In the Elite Eight for the first time, Rollins beat Lander in the opening round before falling to eventual national champion Shaw in the semifinals. Rollins finished the year 28-6 overall and 12-4 in SSC play.

Successful collegiate coaching is nothing new to the Wilkes family as Glenn is the son of former Stetson University Head Coach and Florida Hall of Fame member Glenn Wilkes Sr. The duo has combined for more than 1,000 wins and during last season, Wilkes Jr. passed his father’s career win total of 551, amassed during a 38-year tenure at Stetson. A number of those wins came during the four seasons in which the younger Wilkes spent as a player for his father. A four-year let-terman and the one time holder of the Stetson single game assist record, Wilkes was a starter on Stetson teams that defeated powerhouses including Marquette, Southwestern Louisiana and South Carolina.

Following his playing career, Wilkes served as a student assistant at Stetson for one year. He then worked as an account executive for United Stationers, the country’s largest wholesaler of office supplies and was the Houston Division Salesman-of-the-Year in 1983.

Wilkes married former Rollins College All-American basketball star Kim Tayrien in August of 1992. She currently teaches at Winter Park High School. They are the parents of two boys, Wyatt and Van
