11

• Cultural norms.

• Women have historically been asked to volunteer more often.

• Expectations are that women provide help in time of need (both inside and outside of the family).

• Employment patterns: Although more women volunteer at all employment levels, the gap is widest with part-time work and not working outside home, and more women than men work part-time or not at all outside home.

WHY THE GENDER GAP EXISTS.

Page 12: 1. 2 MISSION. The One Man Project encourages young men to volunteer with charitable organizations and engage in community projects that make our communities

12

• Men view themselves as bread-winners needing to produce income.

• Volunteering is a social event for women, it is not for men.

• Volunteering is viewed by women as a “Badge of Honor”, it is not viewed that way by men.

• It is traditionally women who are recruiting volunteers.

WHY THE GENDER GAP EXISTS.

13

THE IMPORTANCE OF MALE VOLUNTEERS.

• Male role models are vital.

• Some volunteer efforts are male oriented:• Big Brothers• Habitat for Humanity• Boys & Girls Club

• Males can reduce stigma of ‘female only’ occupations:• Work in schools• Care giving

4 INSIGHTS TO RECRUITING MEN.

1. Men take a practical approach to volunteering:

• Men have a strong desire to understand expectations.• What is the time commitment?• What is the nature of the work?• What are the exact responsibilities?

• Men need assurance that they will be able to accomplish the task.

• Men need tangible and measurable outcomes:• Outcomes need to validate effort.• Work needs to provide a sense of accomplishment.• The investment of time and energy needs to result in equal benefit to man and recipient.

15

4 INSIGHTS TO RECRUITING MEN.

2. Having a personal connection with volunteer project facilitates propensity to volunteer:

• Men are most likely to volunteer if they are asked by a co-worker or buddy.

• Opportunities where men perceive that their skills add value are most appealing.

• Men are most likely to volunteer with causes that are personally relevant as opposed to benefiting society in general (i.e. coaching youth).

16

4 INSIGHTS TO RECRUITING MEN.

3. Social connections can be a motivator for men to volunteer, but in a different context than for women:

• Volunteer opportunities can be solo, with networking opportunities later.

• Group activities need to be developed in context of team- building, not social events.

• Group activities organized around work are most successful.

THE ONE MAN PROJECT: ONE MAN CAN INSPIRE MANY.

One Man Events are Produced in Cities Throughout U.S:

The One Man Event is a professional search to select men ages

24-44 in their community who represent the best of the community.

Twenty finalists are selected from all applicants, and each man

has a non-profit partner. Ultimately, one man and his affiliated

charity are selected.

mentors in the community as well as 20 charities that represent the diversity

of the community.

planned for other cities in 2013 and beyond.
