Weko~ to the Collendino Cup Comival. The Arxx Club is proud to present this Comival to

the Ocean Grove Community. It is the

culminotion of six months wonc which began

with a casual conversation with my neighbour,

Denis Walters, and has led to the co

ordination of many local community groups, ~

tireless efforts of rnony people, and the

generous support of local business. It is terrific

to see the community come together like this

to create a carnival to blend in with and

expand our already successful Ocean Grove

Festival. The Ocean Grove Foreshore

Committee must be congratulated, for having

the foresight to support this event, and

recognise it's potential to benefit the town in

terms of tourism.

I hope that you can back a winner today, but

if you don't, re~mber that ~ real winner is

you - the community of Ocean Grove and the

visitors who are ~ in our great town. On

behalf of the Apex Club, thanks for being

involved and I hope you all enjoy -

The Collendina Cup -a tradition continues.

In 1985 at Collendina, it was decided to

have a match race between two horses - Stt1r Wi&es, ridden by Chris Young, and ReigtJte uss, ridden by Denis Walters. A group of

twenty people (appropriately attired)

attended the inaugural "Collend ina Cup" on

the beach in front o f the Collend ina C ar

park. During the barbecue that followed, all

agreed that it had been a fun day and should

become an annual event. Over the next 6

years, cup contenders and spectators grew

in number and as people returned each year,

bringing their friends. it appeared that the

concept of beach racing and the good times

had by all during the day's festivities,

ensured the continued success of the

Collendina Cup.

From 1986 to 1989 the cup was

transferred to the beach at Black Rock, efter

which the race was retumed to Collendine in

1 991 . In this race the closest of finishes was

Sports and leisure Ministries -Rev. Noel Mitax.

fought out as 'Max and 'Whiskey' went

stride for stride over the last 200 metres.

The Collendine Cup hes elways been a dey

where everybody could experience the thrill

of beach racing and join in the fun of foot

reces end other events. Over the years,

fency dress has been the order of the day

and some memorable cheracters heve made

en appearence . The sv.ioelling attendance and

beach restrictions were two of the factors

thet brought about the temporary lapse in

the staging of the C ollendina Cup . It was

often discussed - how uniq ue it would be to

run the day for chari ty and last year Arxx decided to teke up the cha llenge a nd

organise the event.

.From humble beginnings, the C up has gone

from stmigth to strength and this year will be

bigger then ever. In . the years to come it

could rival similar sporting events oversees -

attracting people from far and wide to join

in the clays of 'fun end excitement' .
