EASTER EGG HUNT!! Please plan to join us on Saturday March 30 for the annual Easter Egg hunt.
We will meet on the steps of the Council Home at noon. Please be prompt, this event starts on time and the eggs do not last long. We will have prizes and food. The Easter bunny will also be in attendance. See you there on April 1 at noon!
GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGEMy Dear Brother Knights,The month of March finds us well into the holy season of
Lent. We are pointing toward Easter Sunday on the 31st. Just as Jesus persevered despite temptations by the devil, we, too, must persevere in the Lenten part of our Year of Faith journey in search of spiritual renewal.
March is also Founder’s Month in our Order. As I reported last month this is degree season here at EDW. As I write this our membership chairman Greg Strizek reports that we an-ticipate 18 new members at the February first degree. This is a really good number for a winter degree date and is a credit to the superb job done by Greg and his committee. Thanks, Greg, very much.
Another part of Founder’s Month is our diocesan men’s conference. It is a presentation of the Office for Family Life. Our state council is a co-sponsor of the event and several of our brother EDW knights are involved. The conference is on March 2, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Herndon. Information is available at the website http://www.arlington-diocese.org/familylife/mc_conference.php .
EDW was saddened by the death of our dear friend Fr. John Morel, C.I.C.M. on January 29. Fr. John was 99 years old. Fr. John concelebrated many a mass here at EDW with our own beloved chaplain Fr. Joe. I have heard from a number of you on your remembrances of Fr. John. His explanation and singing of “Taps” is a favorite of us all.
Fr. John’s homilist told us that in his room they found a rock with an inscription on it. It was a version of Phillipians 3:10 where Fr. John wrote “All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection.” Fr. John, along with all our deceased brothers and family members, have already experienced this power. We are reminded of it in every celebration of the mass and particularly on Easter Sunday.
I extend EDW’s condolences to Fr. Joe and all members of the Missionhurst community. The council presented to Fr. Joe a check for $500.00 from all of us to Missionhurst in memory of Fr. Morel. This amount was matched by the Red Coat captains from the waiters fund. Thanks, gentlemen.
Brother Knights remember our priests and all religious in your prayers.
Pray the rosary. Be HIS Light!Stephen J. McTeagueGrand Knight

COUNCIL ELECTIONS FOR FRATERNAL YEAR 2013-2014
Any third degree member in good standing is eligible to serve as a council officer. The offices of Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight, Chancellor, Advocate, Treasurer, Recorder, Warden and guards are voted upon each year by the membership. This election is typically at the second May meeting.
If you think you would like to serve the council as an officer for any of these positions, or if you just have a question on what each office entails, you can contact the Grand Knight or any officer.
This year we are particularly interested in filling the slot of treasurer. PGK, DW Art Gamotis has done a wonderful job as treasurer. However Art has been an officer now for 10 years and deserves now to have Thursday nights off.
None of these offices are easy, but it is very satisfying to be of service to a brother knight and his family.
Thank you for your prayerful consideration. Further information in April Knight Life.Mike Casey
BY-LAWS OF COUNCIL AND CLUB Recently, it became clear that members of both Council and Club were unfamiliar with the loca-tion of the current By-Laws for each organization. By-Laws are found through the internet homepage of EDW: www.kofcedw2473.org For EDW By-Laws = click “Council” and then click “By-Laws” For Club By-Laws = click “Our Club” and then click “By-Laws.” Some Members may not have convenient internet access. Therefore, a limited number of paper copies of By-Laws will be made; one copy will be available to a member who requests it at a regular membership meeting.

The summer camp registration opened on February 1, 2013 and once again filled up in record time. Another great success, all sessions were sold out in the first thirty five minutes of opening. Tennis sessions were sold out as well and as of this writing there are fifteen campers signed up for away camp.
This is a busy month on the K of C campus with the AOH St. Patrick’s Day Dinner on the 17th, Supper Club “Taste of Italy” on the 22nd, Palm Sunday Family Breakfast on the 24th and our Annual Easter Buffet on March 31st. All menus are included in this publication. We also welcome back the St. Agnes Auction on March 2nd, which I must say has been a great experience working with these fine ladies the past few years.
I would like to take this time thank Rene Ventura of our maintenance team for doing such a great job with repair and maintenance of our campus. He’s like the energizer bunny keeps on ticking, I would also like to thank Rene for volunteering his time at the Family Breakfast. Looking forward to a warm spring season and Happy Easter too all.

HELP WANTED/NEEDED; GREAT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITYEDW “REDCOATS” (AKA WAITERS)
To: New, and “not-so-new” members of EDW; also To: Recent Retirees (who want to stay active): Have you been thinking of getting more active with your Knights of Columbus Council? Becoming an EDW “Red-coat” is one way to do that. It’s also a great way to not only help the largest and most community-active KofC Council in Virginia, but is also an excellent way to meet and get to know a lot of your Brother Knights. The EDW Redcoats got their start 50 years ago. We continue the tradition of enabling EDW to host a wide range of events:
small dinners; large fund-raisers for churches and schools; birthday, anniversary and wedding receptions, etc. We’ve six “teams” ranging in size from 20-40 members; including one “retiree” team. Several of our members have been Redcoats for 30-40+ years. Our ranks include young men in their 30’s, as well as some in their 70’s and 80’s! We’re proud of the half-dozen still active Redcoats who are also veterans of WWII. During 2012, 100 men joined EDW Council. Some did join one of the Redcoat teams. This is an open-invitation to ALL other new and older members of EDW to become a Redcoat. No previous waitering or bartending experience required. On-the-job training provided (at least 15-30 min-utes). No updated Resume’ or references required! Simply contact one of our Redcoat team captains (you may know one of them): PGK Vince Long, 703-489-0035; Steve Hilla, 703-243-2417; Patrick Kerrigan, 703-538-5723; PGK Kenny Goss, 703-448-0332; Ray Fioramonti, 703-524-1804; or Bob Muschamp, 703-489-2856.

LADIES U-KNIGHTED NEWSJo Balsamo Wood
The days are getting longer and winter is on its way out. Sunday, March 10 is the day when we turn our clocks forward and Daylight Saving Time begins. Say goodbye to winter and say hello to spring with temperatures slowly rising to greet the vernal equinox on Wednesday, March 20. Tucked in the middle of those two significant days is St. Patrick’s Day on March 17. The Feast of St. Patrick commemorates Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. Observed by the Catholic Church, the day is characterized by attendance at mass, wearing green attire, public parades, and the lifting of Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol. Up until the 1970’s Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17.
Have you ordered your Easter Basket yet? As you know, Easter is almost here! Ladies U-Knighted would like to help you spend more time with your loved ones and less time mak-ing Easter baskets. LUK is offering beautiful made-to-order Easter baskets filled with candy and goodies, available in two sizes. Cost of each made-to-order basket is only $20 (medium) and $25 (large). For information, or to place an order, please contact Nanette O’Neill at (703) 955-9116. Deadline for order-ing is March 16.
Save the Date! Join LUK at the Old Council Home on Saturday, May 18, from 2:00 – 4:00 for a Tea Party and Baby Shower to support Elizabeth House of Borromeo Housing Inc. Elizabeth House, a project sponsored by St. Charles Catholic Church, supplies housing and financial support as well as a support system for unwed mothers. They assist the young mothers by giving them an avenue to keep their babies, as well as teaching them to raise their infants with care and concern for the future. As always, we will serve refreshments and play games for prizes. All are invited; please stop by and join the fun. We are asking that you donate an unwrapped gift to this event. Donations to Elizabeth House and St. Charles Catholic Church are tax-deductable. If you cannot come to the shower and would like to donate a gift, please contact Nanette O’Neill at 703-237-1791 to arrange a drop off. Watch the Knight Life for more information.
Ladies U-Knighted is collecting non-perishable items for the Falls Church Inclement Weather Shelter. Donations are greatly appreciated. Items needed are coffee, cereal, juice, canned goods, powdered drinks, individual size bags of chips, pretzels, cookies, and other non-perishable food items that can be prepared for meals for the less fortunate. Please drop off items at the Old Council Home prior to the next LUK meeting on Thursday, March 7.
We are always looking for new members. For those of you that are unfamiliar with Ladies U-Knighted, we are a group of women that support and promote the goals and endeavors of the Knights of Columbus, Edward Douglass White Council No. 2473 by raising funds through volunteer efforts. We meet at 7:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the K of C Old Council Home, 5115 Little Falls Road, Arlington, VA. Membership is open to any woman who is compelled to help those in need, provide excellence in its many activities, whether religious, charitable, or social, and have fun. Please stop by for a meeting, visit our website at www.ladiesuknighted.com or follow us on Facebook at Ladies U-Knighted.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all. Happy Belated Birthday to former LUK President, Susan Walthall (Feb 25) and happy birthday to former LUK Vice President, Monica Trinidad (March 12). The next LUK meeting is on March 7 at 7:30. Don’t forget to bring a donation for the shelter.
As we planned our activities for the upcoming year, we decided to stick with what has worked for us in the past and concentrate our efforts on charity events. Once again, LUK will continue to support Elizabeth House, a project sponsored by St. Charles Catholic Church that assists unwed mothers, by holding its 4th Annual Baby Shower. Watch the Knight Life for more information.

EDW COUNCIL BY-LAWS UPDATEThe council officers and chairmen met in 2012 to review the
council by-laws. We identified eight items that need to be altered either to account for changes by the Supreme Council, resolutions passed by the council, realistic usage and/or a desire to account for changing times and technology. We will have a resolution to be read, commented on and voted on at the April council meetings.
A quick summary of the alterations: Per resolution passed in 2012 changing the initiation fee.Changing the quorum for our regular business meetings the
first and third Thursdays of the month.Correcting a simple typographical error.Five mentions of council publication to now include the pos-
sibility of multiple publications. It now implies that we have one publication, the paper version of the Knight Life. With the internet, yeah it’s not going away, we now have our web site and in time we foresee electronically delivering the Knight Life and creating an electronic notification system.
Changing from five to a more realistic number of three for the nominating committee for council officer candidates.
Changing the percentage of negative votes needed to deny election of a council officer to conform with the Supreme Charter. This is in four locations.
Merging the Council Activities and Fraternal Activities com-mittees.
Streamlining the requirements for our chaplain’s service for deceased members.
