K-W SERRA RELIGIOUS LIFE DINNER Also invited to the dinner are

the permanent deacons

serving in Waterloo Region.

It is hoped that all Serrans as

well as members of the com-

munity will join us for this

event.

This event, along with the

Altar Server Award program,

are two of the most popular

events in the Serra year.

SEE YOU THERE !!!!

A major event of the K-W

Serra club is the Religious Life

Dinner. Dr Bergman is our

speaker and Bishop Crosby

will attend.

This year it will be held on

Wednesday January 16th at

Conestoga Place, formerly

the Knights of Columbus Cen-

tre. This event has always been

an opportunity for Serrans to

thank the religious sisters

serving in our community.

Dr. Katherine Bergman,

President St. Jerome’s

University Guest

Speaker at the Dinner

Student Bret Israel and

Chaplain Kelly Steven

Kelly Stephen, the chaplain at Resurrec-tion High School attended a recent Serra meeting along with Bret Israel a grade 11 student and talked about the religion program at the school that provides for approximately 1600 stu-dents between the ages of 14 and 18.

the team who plan liturgies.

Notice their angel wings!

One of the first things that they

mentioned was that most young

people in this age group have an

attention span of about 40-60 sec-

onds and this impacts directly on

how religion can be presented to

them. They shared a portion of a video about St. Therese of Lisieux that has been used and well received in classes. Mr. Stephen shared that in his experience, young peo-ple want to “feel and touch” relig-ion and talked about an experi-ence at St. Louis church in Water-loo where students actually “rang the church bell”-this was signifi-cant for some students and they felt very connected. Bret, especially, talked about this program that encourages students to be involved in a variety of pro-grams and events that require “help”- he finds this a great way to

put his faith into action.

Holy Mass is celebrated for

the entire student body five

times a year and this is be-

cause of the support of priests

like our chaplain Fr. Toby and

other priests in the school area

The Wednesday November 7th

Serra meeting brought us Perma-

nent Deacon Dr. Peter Gittens

PhD, who is responsible for the

Permanent Deacon program in

Hamilton Diocese. He was born in

St. Lucia and educated in a minor

seminary in Trinidad before going

to Rome to finish his formation for

the priesthood. Before being or-

dained , Peter decided against ordi-

nation and left the seminary. Later

he married and when the opportu-

nity to become a deacon arose this

was a natural fit for him.

Deacon Peter has been a professor at

the St. Augustine Seminary and is

now in charge of the education of

those studying for the class of 2016 in

Hamilton. The deacons in training go

to Hamilton once a month for their

studies, often, along with their wives.

Fr. Mark Gatto is Director of Forma-

tion and Monsignor Ed House is

chaplain to the Permanent Deacons.

We wish Deacon Peter all the best in

his new role in the Diaconate program

in Hamilton Diocese. God Bless You!

Vocations Video at Resurrection High School

Fr. Toby Collins, Vocation

Director for the Congregation

of the Resurrection, and

teacher Richard Sloos, are

working with students at Res-

urrection Catholic Secondary

School to produce a vocations

video for the Congregation of

the Resurrection and Waterloo

Serrans.

It is an exciting venture as

students have visited St.

Jerome's University, as well as

St. Francis and Sacred Heart

Parishes in search of youth

who know the CR's and are

eager to tell others about the

great things these priests and

brothers are doing in Kitchener

-Waterloo. The hope is that a 5

minute video will be com-

pleted by early December that

is light-hearted and informa-

tive. The students have been

working hard to get the inter-

views completed on time and

the editing just right. The video

is funded by the Waterloo

Serrans and promises to be a

lively way to raise awareness of the call to religious life and

the difference those under

vows continue to make in the

llives of young people.

Patrick is a frequent visitor to

the Kitchener-Waterloo area

and has many friends and rela-

tives here. He is a graduate of

the former St. Jerome’s High
