Dates for COMTRANS Moscow
2011, the International Exhibition
or Commercial Vehicles, have been
announced. The air will now take place
in alternate years to IAA Commercial
Vehicles, with the 2011 event to take
place from 13-17 September 2011.
Organisers have been pleased with the
number o registrations so ar which
indicate a rise in demand or commercial
vehicles in Russia and the CIS.
National and international
manuacturers o commercial vehicles
and their suppliers will be presenting
new products or the markets in eastern
Europe and the CIS in Pavilion 3 at the
Crocus Expo International Exhibition
Center in Moscow.
Many o the major truck manuacturers
have already registered or this
exhibition, including Volvo, Scania,
Mercedes, DAF, Volkswagon, MAN,
Kamaz and Iveco. Several major trailer
manuacturers have also registered
including Kgel, Lohr, Kssbohrer, ZF,
Bezares, Blitzrotary, Kendrion Linnig
and Padoan.
New dates for COMTRANS 2011
Freight 2011 launch
The VTA (Victorian TransportAssociation) and the VACC (VictorianAutomobile Chamber o Commerce),
together with the Victorian Minister or
Roads and Ports, Tim Pallas, ofcially
launched Freight 2011 on Wednesday
20 October.
At the event held at the Melbourne
Park Function Centre, Minister Pallasaddressed some o the industrys key
issues, including the challenge o
the skills shortage, saying that the
industry would need 60,000 new
drivers in Victoria by 2026 to cope
with the growing reight task and
the aging workorce.
Currently, the government is looking
at ways of fast-tracking the path to a
heavy vehicle licence. I you dont getthem, then theyre gone, said Minister
Pallas, alluding to young people
wanting to become truck drivers.
The Minister also addressed the need
or higher productivity vehicles to be
better recognised and the need or
greater progress, despite certain higher
productivity vehicles being allowed to
operate on trial networks.
While addressing that localgovernments were an obstacle in
this regard, Minister Pallas said that
higher productivity vehicles needed to
be properly recognised as an efcient
means o transportation so that we can
develop into intermodal hubs.
Minister Pallas also spoke o the
recently implemented truck exclusion
lanes which he said have been
embraced by the industry. As the
amount o truck reight on our roads
increases, he said that truck drivers
needed to continue to work togetherwith the community.
Jointly hosted by the VTA and the VACC,
Freight 2011 is a year o reight related
activities, workshops, feld days and
practical solutions that are designed to
improve reight businesses and the way
reight is moved to ensure a viable and
sustainable uture or the industry as
the reight task continues to grow.
Freight 2011 events will be based
around fve key themes:
Freight People
Freight Technology
Freight Environment
Freight Safety Freight Agenda
Freight 2011 will culminate with
Freight Week which takes place
from 5-9 September. During Freight
Week, outcomes o the years work
will be presented.

The Australian Government hasannounced that six rest areasalong the Hume Freeway will be rebuilt
and seven bridges within Victorias
Green Triangle will be strengthened
so that they can carry new higher
productivity vehicles.
Works on the rest areas along the
Hume Freeway and bridges in the
Green Triangle region is scheduled to
commence in coming months.
Federal Inrastructure and Transport
Minister, Anthony Albanese said the
projects would be unded as part o
the second and fnal round o the
Governments $70 million Heavy Vehicle
Saety and Productivity Program.
He commented, The bridge
strengthening projects will cut time
and distance o the journeys o many
truck drivers and the upgraded rest
areas will provide sae, modern places
at which they can take a break or catch
up on their sleep.
Since coming to ofce, weve been
working with the trucking industry to
address the lack o roadside acilities
and open up more o the nations road
network to trucks actions which
will make the industry saer and more
productive.
The $8.19 million in unding or the
projects within the Green Triangle and
along the Hume Freeway supplement the
$11 million already committed by the
Victorian Government.

(VTA) held elections on Tuesday, 26
October or positions on its GeneralFreight Committee (GFC) and has
announced those that have been elected
or 2010/11.
The General Freight Committee reports
to the VTA Executive Council. VTA CEO
Philip Lovel AM said it is the engine
room or the strategic management
o issues dealt with by the Association
which aect general reight.

o the Committee, while Angela Murphy

Peters long-term commitment
to the VTA is outstanding, and the
stability he brings to the role hashelped the Committee to stay ocussed
and eective. Angela continues to
demonstrate that gender is no barrier
to active industry representation at the
highest level, said Mr Lovel.
He continued, The evolving stricter
regulatory environment at the State
and Federal level will aect the
reight logistics industry signifcantly.
The General Freight Committee isresponsible or making the voice o
the VTA in these debates strong and
well-reasoned.
But, there is also a lot that the
industry needs to do or itsel to shape
its own successul and proftable
uture. This includes addressing
uture workorce planning & skills
challenges, encouraging innovation
and best practice, improving saetyoutcomes, and tackling environmental
improvements rom a commercial
perspective. The GFC is central to these
initiatives on behal o the VTA.
