Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la la la la! This popular refrain signals the end of yet another year and the start of a brand new one.

2014 has been a busy year for all of us in Teckwah – adopting a new brand identity, setting up and moving into our new regional headquarters, seeing the commissioning of new plants in Wuxi, China, Johor, Malaysia and Batam, Indonesia – 2014 has been nothing short of eventful.

This year being the first time we celebrate Christmas at Pixel Red, the organizing committee, which comprised the Staff Club and representatives from various business units, arranged a Christmas get-together with games and a Best Christmas Decoration contest using recycled materials. The clear winner was Level 2 Print Production who won the judges over with their clever use of recycled materials to create a 10-feet tall Christmas tree. A small cottage by the tree - also made from the same type of material - completed the picture of a homey Christmas!

With days away from a brand new year, let’s hear from our Chairman and Managing Director, Thomas Chua, as he delivers his year end message.

We hope 2014 has been a great year for all and we look forward to a fruitful 2015.

Dear Colleagues,

We have come to the end of another calendar and financial year. 2014 was another milestone year for Teckwah as we made the much anticipated move to Pixel Red after years of planning, design and construction. By and large, we made the transition smoothly. I would like to record my thanks to Pixel Red’s project team for their hard work and the tremendous efforts of coordinating the seamless move from TIC Tech Centre to Pixel Red. Thank you to all of you, as well, for making some necessary adjustments to your routine, to accommodate the new location and new environment.

Our colleagues overseas have also had an eventful year. I am proud of their efforts, particularly, our team in Batam who have outperformed the target set. This was no mean feat, given the fact that Indonesia was going through important political changes which caused some uncertainty in the economic and political landscape. Some other subsidiaries did not fare as well. To them, I would just like to offer words of encouragement and challenge them to better their performance in the coming year.

2015 is expected to be another year of uncertainty. The global economy still faces much downside risks with geopolitical factors a major concern. With crude oil prices registering record lows and weaker raw material prices, we are unlikely to see inflation at the same levels as experienced in the past. This would mean a lower cost of living. There is expected to be a squeeze on our revenue as businesses tighten spending in the face of uncertainty and keen competition. While the global economy is not within our control, we need to challenge ourselves to turn the adverse conditions to positive opportunities in order to emerge stronger. Hence, we have to ready ourselves to provide unique solutions and offer distinctive customer service in order to differentiate ourselves from the competition.

We need to remain open to change and ready for new opportunities that technological developments are bringing. Rather than be swept along with these advancements, we must strategically leverage on them by continuously improving our own capabilities. As we take on the role of being a champion of transformative change in the print industry, we must be ready to offer technologically advanced solutions and services in print, packaging, media, marketing and communications. I am happy to say that we have made a positive start.

It leaves me now to wish you much joy and happiness during the festive season ahead. Celebrate with family and friends and come back ready and excited for 2015 and all that it will bring!

REVENUE BY BUSINESS SEGMENT (MILLION) PROFIT BEFORE TAX (MILLION)

Print-related business accounted for 60.4% of the Group’s revenue. Its revenue contribution declined by 2.6% from $27.2 million to $26.5 million as a result of lower demand from some existing customers of our China operations and the cessation of Print-related operations in Australia since the second half of last year.

Non-print related business accounted for 39.6% of the Group’s total revenue. Its revenue contribution declined by 6.7% from $18.6 million to $17.3 million mainly due to cessation of some projects during the second half of last year.

The Group’s operating profit before tax for Q3 ended 30 September 2014 decreased by 45.1% to $2.8 million as compared to $5.1 million for the same period last year. The decrease is mainly attributed to decrease in customer demands coupled with higher depreciation expenses due to investment in property, plant and equipment as well as continuous price pressure during the period.

Business China Award Ceremony 2014

Our Chairman and Managing Director, Thomas Chua, who is the President of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI), received the Business China Enterprise Award 2014 on behalf of SCCCI. The Award Ceremony was held on 18 November, the Guest-of-Honour being Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.

With more than 100 years of history, SCCCI has played a significant role in building trade and relational links with China.

About the Business China AwardThe Business China Award is a prestigious honour given to an individual or organisation that has made significant contributions towards promoting trade and cultural relationships between Singapore and China. The annual event is into its 5th run this year.

PT Teckwah ExpansionPT Teckwah has recently completed the expansion of its manufacturing plant in Batam, bringing the total production area to 9600 sqm with dedicated spaces for production and warehousing needs, as well as for future expansion. The new plant was completed in June and is already in operation.

Set up for the new plant was done in stages over a period of 3.5 months to minimise disruption to the production schedule as it was carried out during the peak season.

Besides being fitted with new machinery, manpower resources and logistics operations were also ramped up simultaneously to support the expanded facility, including working out a 24-hour round the clock delivery schedule during this busy period.

With the additional space and equipment, PT Teckwah is now big enough to cope with increased demand yet small enough to exhibit the personal touch.

TWPPSB Recognised for Manufacturing Excellence Teckwah Paper Products Sdn Bhd (TWPPSB), a subsidiary of PPH Teckwah Value Chain Sdn Bhd, was conferred the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) Excellence Award on 27 November 2014. The FMM Excellence Award (FMMEA), introduced in 2010, is in its 5th year this year. The Award recognises businesses for their outstanding achievement and excellence in manufacturing, process improvements and corporate growth.

The judging processes were rigorous, stringent and evaluated on Leadership, Marketing, Innovation, People, Operation and Business Results Excellence.

There are three Award categories, namely; Rising Star of the Year Award, Manufacturer of the Year Award for SMIs and Manufacturer of the Year Award for Large Companies.

TWPPSB is the winner of Manufacturer of the Year Award for SMIs.

About 350 staffs and tenants of Pixel Red took part in a fire drill on 18 November 2014.

This was the first fire drill since we relocated in May this year. The purpose of the fire drill was to ensure that everyone in Pixel Red was familiar with the building’s evacuation routines in the event of a fire breakout.

An external Fire Safety Manager conducted a briefing to all fire wardens days before the drill. The date of the fire drill and details of the evacuation procedures were communicated to all staff of Teckwah and tenants so that everyone would be ready for it.

In spite of the last minute change of assembly point from an outdoor area to an indoor one due to the morning drizzle, the evacuation went on smoothly and was completed ahead of the targeted time of 15 minutes. There was also a demonstration on the use of fire extinguishers by the Fire Safety Manager as well as tenants and staff at the assembly area.

The exercise also tested the readiness of the building’s safety alarm system, and issues identified from this exercise will be improved upon for future drills.

Give blood, save a life – It was a call for a good cause and a group of Teckwah staff responded to the blood donation drive organised by our Staff Club Committee. More than 10 staff came and signed up to give blood at Blood Bank@ Health Sciences Authority. As it was held during a working day, the Staff Club Committee arranged transport to send staff to the blood bank to minimize disruption from the travelling.

Chairperson of the Staff Club Tan Qing Hui said, “Blood donation is a noble gift, and doesn’t cause us a single cent. We never know when the blood we give can help save a life. People should be forthcoming in participating in such a meaningful event.”

Movie Night – Dracula UntoldWhat better way to unwind from a busy work week than catching a great movie with nice company and free snacks to go with it? That was what 140 Teckwah staff did on 9 October when they turned up in groups at Shaw Theatres Nex to watch the blockbuster epic action movie Dracula Untold.

The movie event was organised by the Staff Club Committee who also handed out snack packs – either a choice of sausage bun or popcorn pack - as soon as the staff arrived at the movie hall. This helped to ease hunger pangs for those who did not have time for dinner before the movie.

This is the 2nd movie night organised by the Staff Club Committee in 2014, following a similarly well-received movie event organised in April for Captain America – The Winder Soldier.

Teckwah’s Movie Night is one of the many recreational activities organised by the Staff Club Committee to encourage bonding and social interaction among staff after working hours.

Our first Christmas celebration in Pixel Red was held on 17 December 2014. The organising committee members were from ICT, TWL and TVC, advisors were from Staff Club and HR. The emcees were Nigel Pang and Emily Leong.

Staff were excited to see Santa Clause and Santarina when they appeared at the foyer. Many staff rushed up to take photographs with them.

Our Chairman and Managing Director, Thomas Chua, delivered an opening address to all staff before the celebrations started with an exciting game where questions were asked to determine how well the staff knew Teckwah and Pixel Red.

A “Pick me up” game was held where staff had to transport items from one location to another. The group who could pick the most items within the alloted time would be the winner. All staff enjoyed in the game with laughter and cheering accompanying the challenge.
