KICKBACK

WARNING: Avoid kickback whichcan result in serious injury. Kickback is thebackward, upward or sudden forward motionof the guide bar occurring when the chainnear the upper tip of the guide bar contactsany object such as a log or branch, or whenthe wood closes in and pinches the chain inthe cut. Contacting a foreign object in thewood can also result in loss of control.S Rotational Kickback can occur when themoving chain contacts an object at the uppertip of the guide bar. This contact can causethe chain to dig into the object, which stopsthe chain for an instant. The result is alightning fast, reverse reactionwhich kicks theguide bar up and back toward the operator.

S Pinch-Kickback can occur when thewoodcloses in and pinches the moving chain inthecut along the top of the guidebar and thechain is suddenly stopped. This suddenstopping of the chain results in a reversal ofthe chain force used to cut wood andcauses the pruner to move in the oppositedirection of the chain rotation. The pruner isdriven straight back toward the operator.

S Pull-In can occur when the moving chaincontacts a foreignobject in thewood in thecutalong the bottom of the guide bar and thechain is suddenly stopped. This suddenstopping pulls the pruner forward and awayfrom the operator and could easily cause theoperator to lose control of the pruner.

REDUCE THE CHANCE OFKICKBACKS Recognize that kickback can happen. Witha basic understanding of kickback, you canreduce the element of surprise whichcontributes to accidents.

S Never let the moving chain contact anyobject at the tip of the guide bar.

S Keep the working area free fromobstructions suchas other trees, branches, rocks, stumps, etc. Eliminate or avoid anyobstruction that your chain could hit whileyou are cutting. When cutting a branch, donot let the guide bar contact branch or otherobjects around it.

S Keep your chain sharp and properlytensioned. A loose or dull chain canincrease the chance of kickback occurring.Follow manufacturer’s chain sharpeningand maintenance instructions. Checktension at regular intervals with the enginestopped, never with the engine running.Make sure the bar clamp nut is securelytightened after tensioning the chain.

S Begin and continue cutting at full speed. Ifthe chain is movingat aslower speed, thereis greater chance of kickback occurring.

S Cut one branch at a time.S Use extreme caution when re-entering aprevious cut.

Page 7: 1--800--554--6723 Instruction Manual

7

S Do not attempt cuts starting with the tip ofthe bar (plunge cuts).

S Watch for shifting of wood or other forces thatcould close a cut and pinch or fall into chain.

S Use the Reduced--Kickback Guide Bar andLow--Kickback Chain specified for your unit.

MAINTAIN CONTROL

S Keep a good, firm grip on the pruner withboth hands when the engine is running anddon’t let go. A firm grip will help you reducekickback and maintain control. Keep thefingers of your left hand encircling and yourleft thumb under the assist handle. Keepyour right hand completely around thethrottle handle whether your are righthanded or left handed.

S Stand with your weight evenly balanced onboth feet.

S Stand slightly to the left side of the pruner tokeep your body from being in a direct linewith the cutting chain.

KICKBACK SAFETY FEATURESThe following features are included on yourpruner to help reduce the hazard of kickback;however, such features will not totally eliminatethis danger. As a pruner user, do not rely onlyon safety devices. You must follow all safetyprecautions, instructions, and maintenance inthis manual to help avoid kickback and otherforces which can result in serious injury.S Reduced--Kickback Guide Bar, designedwith a small radius tip which reduces thesize of the kickback danger zone on the bartip.

WARNING: Remove fuel cap slowlywhen refueling.

HELPFUL TIPToobtain the correct oil mixratio, pour 3.2 ounces of2--cycle synthetic oil intoone gallon of fresh gas.

This engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline must be mixed with a good qualitysynthetic 2-cycle air-cooled engine oildesigned to be mixed at a ratio of 40:1.Poulan/WEED EATER brand synthetic oil isrecommended. Mix gasoline and oil at a ratioof 40:1. A 40:1 ratio is obtained by mixing 3.2fluid ounces (95 ml) of oil with 1 gallon (4liters) of unleaded gasoline. DO NOT USEautomotive oil or marine oil. These oils willcause engine damage.Whenmixing fuel, followinstructions printed on container. Once oil isadded to gasoline, shake containermomentarilyto assure that the fuel is thoroughly mixed.Always read and follow the safety rules relatingto fuel before fueling your unit.

CAUTION: Never use straight gasoline inyour unit. This will cause permanent enginedamage and void the limited warranty.FUEL REQUIREMENTSThis engine requires the use of minimum 87octane [R+M]/2 clean gasoline.

IMPORTANTUse of alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol orusing ethanol ormethanol) can causemajor en-gine performance and durability problems.

WARNING: Alternative fuels (not gas-oline) such as E--15 (15% alcohol), E--20 (20%alcohol),E--85 (85%alcohol) areNOTclassifiedas gasoline and are NOT approved for use in2--stroke gasoline engines. Use of alternativefuels will cause problems such as: improperclutch engagements, overheating, vapor lock, power loss, lubrication deficiency, deteriorationof fuel lines, gaskets and internal carburetorcomponents, etc. Alternative fuels cause highmoisture absorption into the fuel/oil mixtureleading to oil and fuel separation.BAR AND CHAIN LUBRICATIONThe barand chain require lubrication. Thechainoiler provides continuous lubrication to thechainand guide bar. Be sure to fill the bar oil tankwhen you fill the fuel tank (Capacity =4.6 fl. oz.).Lack of oil will quickly ruin the bar and chain.Too little oil will cause overheating shown bysmoke coming from the chain and/or discolor-ation of the bar. The oil output is automaticallymetered during operation. Always fill the bar oiltank when you fill the fuel tank.Genuine Poulan or Poulan PRO bar andchain oil is recommended to protect your unitagainst excessive wear from heat and fric-tion. Poulan or Poulan PRO oil resists hightemperature thinning. If Poulan or PoulanPRO bar and chain oil is not available, use agood grade SAE 30 oil.S Never use waste oil for bar and chainlubrication.

S Always stop the engine before removingthe oil cap.

WARNING: Be alert for and guardagainst kickback. Donot allow themovingchainto contact any other branches or objects at thenose of the guide bar when pruning. Allowingsuch contact can result in serious injury.

IMPORTANT POINTSS Work slowly, keeping both hands firmlygripped on the pruner. Maintain securefooting and balance.

S Plan cut carefully. Check direction branchwill fall.

S Watch out for springpoles. Springpoles aresmall size limbs which can catch the chainand whip toward you or pull you off balance.Use extreme caution when cutting small sizelimbs or slender material.

S Watch out for branches immediately behindthe branch being pruned. If the chain hits therear branch, damage to the unit may occur.

S Be alert for springback. Watch out forbranches that are bent or under pressure.Avoid being struck by the branch or thepruner when the tension in the wood fibersis released.

S Keep a clear work area. Frequently clearbranches out of the way to avoid trippingover them.

S Long branches should be removed inseveral pieces.

Cut from your right to your left.

WARNING: Alwayswear eyeprotec-tion. Never lean over the trimmer head.Rocks ordebris can ricochet or be thrown intoeyes and face and cause blindness or otherserious injury.Do not run the engine at a higher speed thannecessary. The cutting line will cut efficientlywhen the engine is runat less than full throttle. At lower speeds, there is less engine noiseand vibration. The cutting line will last longerand will be less likely to “weld” onto the spool.Always release the throttle trigger and allowthe engine to return to idle speed when notcutting. To stop engine:S Release the throttle trigger.S Push and release the engine ON/STOPswitch.

TRIMMER LINE ADVANCEThe trimmer linewill advance approximately 2inches (5 cm) each time the bottom of thetrimmer head is tapped on the groundwith theengine running at full throttle.Themost efficient line length is the maximumlength allowed by the line limiter.Always keep the shield in placewhen the toolis being operated. To advance line:S Operate the engine at full throttle.S Hold the trimmer head parallel to andabovethe grassy area.

S Tap the bottom of the trimmer head lightly onthe ground one time. Approximately 2 inches(5 cm) of line will be advanced with each tap.

Always tap the trimmer head on a grassyarea. Tapping on surfaces such as concreteor asphalt can cause excessive wear to thetrimmer head.If the line is worn down to 2 inches (5 cm) orless, more than one tapwill be required to ob-tain the most efficient line length.

WARNING: Use only 0.080” (2 mm)diameter line. Other sizes of line will not ad-vance properly and can cause serious injury.Do not use other materials such as wire, string, rope, etc. Wire can break off duringcutting and become a dangerous missile thatcan cause serious injury.CUTTING METHODS

WARNING: Use minimum speedand do not crowd the linewhen cuttingaroundhard objects (rock, gravel, fence posts, etc.),whichcandamage the trimmer head, becomeentangled in the line, or be thrown causing aserious hazard.S The tip of the line does the cutting. You willachieve the best performance andminimum line wear by not crowding the lineinto the cutting area. The right and wrongways are shown below.Tip of the LineDoes The Cutting

Right

Line Crowded IntoWork Area

WrongS The line will easily remove grass andweeds fromaroundwalls, fences, trees andflower beds, but it also can cut the tenderbark of trees or shrubs and scar fences.

S For trimming or scalping, use less than fullthrottle to increase line lifeand decreaseheadwear, especially:S During light duty cutting.S Near objects around which the line canwrap such as small posts, trees or fencewire.

S For mowing or sweeping, use full throttle fora good clean job.

TRIMMING -- Hold the bottom of the trimmerhead about 3 inches (8 cm) above the groundand at an angle. Allow only the tip of the line tomake contact. Do not force trimmer line intowork area.Trimming

3 inches (8 cm)above ground

SCALPING -- The scalping technique re-moves unwanted vegetation down to theground. Hold the bottom of the trimmer headabout 3 inches (8 cm) above the ground andatanangle.Allow the tipof the line to strike theground around trees, posts, monuments, etc. This technique increases line wear.

Scalping

MOWING -- Your trimmer is ideal for mowingin places conventional lawn mowers cannotreach. In the mowing position, keep the lineparallel to the ground. Avoid pressing thehead into the ground as this can scalp theground and damage the tool.Mowing

SWEEPING -- The fanning action of the rotat-ing line can be used for a quick and easyclean up. Keep the line parallel to and abovethe surfaces being swept and move the toolfrom side to side.Sweeping
