The past year has been a positive one for Malaysian education. Several universities climbed in their rankings and Budget 2018 is up once again after 3-years. Thus far, it has been an encouraging start in 2018 with the following through of the Dual Language Programme (DLP) and positive policies for inclusive education in public schools. Though progressive changes are taking place in the Malaysian education scene, much more still needs to be done. There is a constant need to relook at how the entire Malaysia education ecosystem and culture is perceived and carried out by all its stakeholders - if it is on the right track.

Warnings of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is not one aimed at the blue-collared, but towards the knowledge-based white-collared workers which could be replaced by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big-data analytics. It is time to re-examine if Malaysian education reacting adequately to these warnings. Much emphasis has been given to science, technology, engineering, and mathematic (STEM), but it is questionable if other crucial skill sets are given equal emphasis and whether or not Malaysia is truly prepared in terms of skills and human capital development.

Ultimately, the fundamentals of education remain the same-to prepare one for life, be it according to individual interest or toe enable oneself to contribute back to society through work.

ASLI’s annual Malaysian Education Summit is an opportune platform for all enablers of quality education - educators, experts, policy makers, investors, civil society, and other stakeholders from both the public and private sector to discuss pressing issues.

The Summit will discuss key issues and challenges in Malaysian education, provide experts a platform to share the latest education techniques, review issues in education policy, environmental factors, as well as allowing its participants to get answers, learn, and to highlight issues, as well as to network with parties of interest wanting to improve Malaysian education.

22ND MALAYSIAN EDUCATION SUMMIT 2018“Creating the Right Environment to Enable Quality Education”

Vice-Chancellors Roundtable: Defining Success in Education and Keeping Pace with the Global Needs of EducationGood academic results, which was once the definition of success in a classroom, and still is to some extent, is quickly giving way to all-roundedness and ultimately, one that can only be gauged by how well a student is prepared for the road ahead. The shape of education is evolving with new methods being introduced such as the government’s 2u2i programme to better prepare university for the working world. Beyond profit incentives, what is the end goal for the education institutions and how are they going about achieving this ‘success’? Several “goals” such as Education 2030 Incheon Declaration and SDG Goal 4 have called for improvements in global education standards. Though Malaysian education is respectable in its own right, it is responding and adapting fast enough to international needs. How can Malaysian qualifications be further recognised by the international community for its quality and graduate employability? Is it diverse enough to meet global needs? Are global agendas such as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship Education (ECED) being realised by Malaysians?

SESSION 4: Rethinking Education: How Can Education Today Meet the Needs of Tomorrow? Literacy rates in Malaysia are up 95% in 2017, a massive improvement from the dawn of the millennium when it was as low as 89%. However, required skills have gone behold reading and writing. Financial, technological, problem solving, and even health literacy is equally important in the modern workplace. Illiteracy in these areas can potential be as damaging as the lack of literacy of old towards the growth of the nation and the region. What are the skills required for the future and how can we plan and structure education to teach students in a more wholesome fashion?

SESSION 5: Unlocking the Potential of Educators Teachers are undoubtedly a critical factor towards good quality education. Often discussed is the curriculum or teaching tools of students, and an emphasis on life-long learning. Hence, teachers themselves must adapt andcontinuously improve to improve the quality of education. What are the obstacles preventing educators from improving

and how do we encourage educators to go beyond and improve the quality of teaching?

SESSION 6: Updates in Edu-TechnologyThere has been much emphasis on the application of technology in everyday life, no less in the area of education which can bring about a more enriching learning experience. Due to the intense pace of technological evolution, is it necessary for stakeholders of education to be updated with the latest solutions by leading experts, not only to leverage on the advantages technology brings, but also to tailor an educational setting that prepares future generations to exploit these technological advantages in a wholesome and productive way. How can this be further intensified in institutions of learning and beyond?

SESSION 7: Never Stop Learning: How to Survive and Thrive in a Constantly Changing WorldThe importance of life-long learning cannot be understated in a contemporary working environment that constantly demands for the incorporation of skills. What are Malaysian attitudes towards continued education? What more needs to be done to encourage people of the importance of LLL? What obstacles are preventing people from pursuing education while at work and how can this be minimised? Are employees changing fast enough to match up with the requirements of the job?
