Calling All ScreenersAs a longtime fan of talk radio, I'm

hoping you have a lot of professionalscreeners as readers.

Will you please "86" the ubiquitous"Jean of Carson" for a month or so?We have heard the hearse on theDiamond Lane story, the GOP Lord'sPrayer and the rest of the playlist over500 times this past month alone.

Enough! Remember, screeners, vari-ety is the spice of life - and talk radio.Do your job! And "Jean of Carson" -find one!

Robert McArthur of Mar VistaWin or Lose, Loves the Guide

Thanks so much for the wonderfuloldies CD. It was a pleasant surprise.

I really love your magazine (even if I

didn't win the prize). It keeps meupdated on the radio world here inL.A. Keep up the good work.

Robert G. Torres of Redondo BeachFilling A Need

Thank you for filling an importantneed. There's a higher percentage ofgood radio than good TV, and now wecan read about it in a widely availableguide. Good for you!

Jeri Jarnagan of Pacific Palisades

Old Vs. New IssuesI originally saw a copy of your guide

when a friend loaned me one. It was

the Vol. 1 No. 7 of May/June 1995. Ihave to agree with the letter writerin your current issue: that the otherformat of listings was so much betterin the earlier issue(s?). It was somuch more comprehensive for aradio listener.

In spite of that, I here enclose mycheck to subscribe. I'm so happy that aradio guide is being published.

Good luck!Darcy Carroll of Los Angeles

Make It EasierAll I want is to find out what's on

when. I want to open my TV Gui- erRadio Guide and look for today and thetime and find out what's on so I cantune in now. What's all this "UrbanContemporary," "University/College,""New Adult Contemporary,""Weekdays/Weekends," "SpecialShows," "Adult Contemporary" ?

The new format is as bad as voicemail and not what I subscribe for.Make the Radio Guide as easy to use asthe TV Guide, or I'm not going to playwith you anymore. Since it is a radioguide, maybe there are enough pagesfor both formats under one cover.

EBS Changing Its Tune... erTone

So far, the only panic caused by theEBS (Emergency Broadcast System) hasbeen among broadcasters who fear losingtheir audience when the infamous tonecomes on following the "this a test..."spiel by the somber announcer.According to the FCC, that announce-ment will soon be history as the EBS getsa major overhaul and a new name.

Since most people expect to see grilledcheese in the mirror before they ever getto hear directions to one of the city'snon-existent bomb shelters during anuclear attack from a renegade third -world dictator, the EBS test has served asgrist for standup comedians.

In one famous EBS snafu, the systeminadvertently went off in 1971, prompt-ing many stations across the country tosign off. Many more chose to disregard it,however. (The FCC corrected that prob-lem long ago.)

The digital revolution in communica-tions nationwide prompted the FCC toimplement its new plan.

"We had no digital signaling protocolfor EBS; the new EAS gives us that proto-col," said Frank Lucia of the FCC'sCompliance and Information Bureau.

One of the architects of the new sys-tem is KFWB's Engineering ManagerRichard Rudman, who said that the newsystem will incorporate all the new tech-nologies of the information superhigh-way. Specially -equipped consumer prod-ucts, such as pagers, CD players as wellas radios and TVs, will be able to receivean EAS alert and can even provide warn-ings when they are shut off.

EAS will use a shorter tone duringthose pesky on -air tests and eliminatethe famous "this is a test" preamble.

In many ways, the new technologybrings to fruition the dream of Southlandbroadcast pioneer Loyd Sigmon, whose"Sigalert" is still heard 24 hours a dayduring traffic reports in the Southland.

Sometimes the very thingyou lack is what makesyou stand out. Mr. KFIlacks a real name, phonescreeners, a producer andan agenda. There are no

contrived topics, no prerecorded comedyand no planted callers: "just little old Mr.KFI and a 50,000 -watt microphone topummel you into submission."

His words are fresh and instinctivelywell-chosen, and like a seasoned comedi-an, he punches key phrases quickly.

"Nefarious? Well, it depends. Do youconsider world domination nefarious? You do? All right, then."

He's a guy who knows when to dancearound issues. but he generally faceseach caller with a kind of blunt benevo-lence. He's polite in the most impoliteway.

"Ah, it's another Mr. KFI hussytonight. Well, thank you, ma'am, andwelcome, welcome to the show."

verbal sparring match."Did you say chili from a pump?

Mmmm. you can just taste that botulism.I guess Mormons love chili from thepump. Is that right?"

"Ask Mr. KFI," broadcast on KFI-AM640 weeknights from 9 p.m. to midnight,is light and comedic with serious under-tones. The host covers a broad range ofheadline news and popular culture.

"When I do the show, it's the very bestpart of my day." he said. "I love sittingbehind the microphone and talking topeople. It's the most natural thing I do. Ican have a crappy day or he tired, butthe minute the microphone turns on,none of it matters."

On the air. the mystery man. whonever reveals his real name to his listen-ers, becomes a larger -than -life persona.

"Part of the reason I'm somewhatanonymous with my name is because Ican he more honest that way." he admit-ted. "I don't have to worry about my per-sonal security or my family. People really

cal correctness in a way that startlesunsuspecting listeners.

"Sir, sir, sir, do you stutter inPortuguese too? Oh. you do; O.K., then."

His style of teasing captures yourattention.

"Hey. whoever has the gun to yourhead making you talk about 0.1. -please, make them put that gun down!"

He's skilled at being confrontationalin an acceptable way.

"My hidden agenda? My agenda isn'thidden; it's out in the open, or haven'tyou noticed that yet?"

His callers genuinely amuse him. buthe takes every opportunity to initiate a

think they know me; and, for the mostpart. they really do. Sometimes someonewill call me up and say, 'Remember whenyour mom did that?' They're remember-ing something I said six months ago. It'sfunny how much I reveal of myself. It'sall true, and it's all honest, and peoplerespond to that."

Once in a while his vivid imaginationteams up with his relentless quest for thefunny quip. giving birth to another Mr.KFI legend.

"There are a lot rumors circulatingabout who I am and what my back-ground is all about," he pointed out."Most of the myths have been started byme. Sometimes people choose to believeI am in prison or that I'm out of prisondue to an overturned conviction. The top

"When I do the show, it'smyth is that I'm much older than 28.People are usually surprised by my ageand think I'm much older."

The truth is 28 years old seems youngto have reached the lofty position thatMr. KFI established for himself. It didn'tcome easy. While completing a politicalscience degree at UC Santa Barbara, heworked his way up in radio. His first jobat Santa Barbara radio station KTMSgave him the opportunity to learn thebusiness.

"At a certain point early in my career Irealized that I'd done every job in thatradio station that they were going to letme do," he explained. "The only way Iwas going to become program directorwas if the program director died. And.well, he was in pretty good shape, so Iquit."

The next thing he knew, he was a 23 -year -old with his foot in the door at KFI.Once inside, he made the most of everyopportunity in the big-time environment.Working his way through the ranks, heeventually pitched an idea for a show toProgram Director David Hall. That wasabout three years ago. and. as a result,"Ask Mr. KFI" was launched from thedubious 2 a.m.-to-4 a.m. time slot.

Mr. KFI grins at the decision now."1 guess David's philosophy was that

if the show blew up on the launching pad- under the cover of darkness - no onewould know." he said.

the very best part of my dayBut the show survived liftoff."I chose the name Mr. KFI because it's

easy to remember." the answer man said."I knew it would stand out. And if theshow failed miserably. I figured I'd getanother shot using my real name."

But he didn't need another shot."My voice and what I do is distinctive

enough that you just know it's me." heexplained. "I think a lot of people whoare on the air arc nasty, unhappy peopleand it comes through on the air. If youlisten to me for any amount of time. youknow my true colors and my true beliefs. You can't fake that kind of stuff, becausesooner or later you get trapped. There area lot of people out there who arc disin-genuous - a lot of phonies. But youcan't run from who you really are whenyou do talk radio long enough."

And when you do it long enough, itlooks easier than it really is.

"Sometimes people think I have theeasiest job in the world," he said. "Yousit down and talk three hours a day. Howhard can that be? But what they don'ttake into consideration is that I'm prep-ping all day."

The mystery talk jock reads six news-papers every day; he checks online ser-vices, reads the newspapers. reviews thetons of stuff sent to him daily by fans, and scans a huge range of magazinesfrom Time to Playboy to Self. That's allbefore showtime. He works at home,

Answer Malwhich he shares with his 11 -month -olddaughter and his wife, a morning newsannouncer at KEZY-FM. His job mayseem easy, but it requires that he rationhis energy for the intensity of the three-hour nightly air shift.

The struggle to maintain the upper -hand and cope with the never-endingassault of the unknown caller is one ofMr. KFI's favorite aspects of his on -airperformance. Without a call screener, Mr.KFI never knows what to expect. He can-not choose from a menu of callers andtheir interests displayed on a computerscreen. Never knowing what to expectrequires a special approach. For many, the fun of getting through to Mr. KFI isthe chance to knock him off balance dur-ing the three hour verbal jousting match.

"If there's someone I really disagreewith, or someone who really bothers me,instead of yelling at them or calling themidiots or blowing them up. I like to justgive them as much rope as possible and

Giving them too much ropelet them hang themselves," said the ver-bal executioner. "Radio is at its bestwhen someone has been given too muchrope."

He's skilled at providing callers withrope. but the most unique thing about"Ask Mr. KFI," is not what he does butwhat he doesn't do.

"I'm not an activist; I'm not trying tochange the world," he said. "I'm just try-ing to do an entertaining show for threehours a night so that it will compel youto come back."

Recently Mr. KFI fielded a call fromStephanie Miller, whose recent departurefrom the 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. shift openedthe door for his full-time schedule on thestation. She sounded wistful even as shewas embarking on her long -sought televi-sion comedy show.

"I miss you," she said. And between shifts, so do thousands

of his "minions" across 14 states. Butthat's the magic of the mystery man: "lit-tle old Mr. KFI and his 50,000 -wattmicrophone."BY ROBIN BLAKELY

King of Confidence ConfessesBY SH1REEN ALAF1

As a rule, Rush Limbaugh avoidsinterviews, but for the first annualMuseum of Television & Radio FestivalOct. 25, he made an exception.

"Remember, it's always 'no.' first." hesaid. "Then I'll think about it."

Perhaps because he was among hispeers, he let down his defenses a bit. Inspite of his reputation for self -affirmingbombast on the air, Limbaugh revealedsome of his insecurities to the group ofradio industry pros.

"I go in every day and think I have toprove myself." he admitted.

Although he's acclaimed as the highestrated national talk show in the countryand heard on 666 affiliates, the star ofthe Excellence in Broadcasting Networkcan't ignore those liberals and leftistswho openly despise him.

"It's tough to go home and say Ito mywife], 'Honey, half the people hate myguts - I feel great,' " he told the audi-ence of 200. "Nobody ever hated me. Iwas totally amazed. I was devastated."

When the president of The Museum ofTV & Radio. Robert Batscha, asked thestar of the two-week festival to define hisshow, he replied. "When you try to figureout what you do, you tend to become acaricature of yourself."

But the guest of honor offered hisanalysis of his immediate superstardom.

"Finally, there's someone who didn'tmake fun of them." he explained. "Here'ssomeone saying what they thought."

He believes the second key to successwas his combination of "irreverence andseriousness," which he said was a newconcept in talk when he entered thearena.

The man who discovered Rush andmade him into today's nationwide phe-nomenon, Ed McLaughlin, credits theconservative gadfly with creating the firstsuccessful nationwide political talk show.

When he first heard his local show inSacramento, the radio businessmanknew he had struck gold.

"He truly transcended what you hadto do with a national show," McLaughlinreflected. "That's how he skewed his pro-gram: it was what interested him. It wasnot a local show. I wanted him in day-time."

Although the former ABC RadioNetwork president had plenty of con-tacts in the business, McLaughlin had

Rush Limbaugh at radio festivaldifficulty selling Limbaugh's show as adaytime program. Most stations preferredto put on national talk shows, such asBruce Williams. at night or during theweekends.

"I was turned down by every majorstation I pitched." McLaughlin recalled."When we started, no one was giving a

national voice to conservatism on talkradio."

However, Limbaugh insisted that hiscareer ambition, rather than politics, drove him.

"I didn't come to New York to be apolitical force: I came to be a broadcast-er," he told the audience. "I had noagenda. but to be the most listened -totalk show in America."

McLaughlin granted his wish.Limbaugh's boss insisted that the man

whom many believe played a major rolein bringing the Republicans to power inthe last congressional elections is a gen-uine conservative and not an oppor-tunist.

Only a few of the other radio profes-sionals disagreed with McLaughlin. Bothliberal and conservative New York radiohot shots heaped credit on the broad-casting icon.

Political Republican consultant andsyndicated talk host lay Severin, who isheard on KCKC AM 1350, lauded

Limbaugh as "the Michael Jordan ofradio."

"He was in the right place at the righttime," noted WABC-AM's Lynn Samuels, one of New York radio's few liberal -and female - talk hosts who spoke atthe festival. She also noted that "Rushwannabes" have imitated him by flyingsolo, without guests.

Another festival panelist, Ed Koch.the former New York mayor -turned -talkhost, emphasized that althoughLimbaugh is more about entertainmentthan politics, he has had an impact onthe political thinking of his listeners.

Veteran syndicated host Barry Farberof Major Networks called Limbaugh "thevolcano that illuminated the sky- likethe toppling of Stalin."

But the object of their awe maintainsthat his monumental celebrity statusdoes not faze him.

"You're not going to believe it: I'm notenergized by it," he told the audience. "Istay away from photographers."

PA Spans 1 Nudes of Los Angeles Radio HistoruFrom its humble beginnings as a five -

watt radio station operating out of a hackbedroom of a private home in Hollywoodto today's 50.000 -watt clear channel pow-erhouse. the oldest radio station in L.A.celebrated 75 years of broadcasting.

KNX was born in the home of radioamateur Fred Christian, an ex -Marconiman and shipboard wireless operator1919.

"At the time when I had KNX [1920-'241. the general trend of thought was thatnews was just a novelty that would run itscourse and fade away." Christian said."However, I felt differently about it."

The Department of Commerceassigned Christian the call letters ()ADZ.On Sept. 10, 1920, he broadcast his firstprogram of recorded music, using phono-graph records lent to him by record storesin exchange for an on -air mention. Radioadvertising as we know it did not exist.

By day, the pioneer broadcaster wasmanager of the Electrical Lighting andPower Company. which sold radio partsused to build receivers. Commercial, pre -assembled radios weren't available until1923. Christian's only earnin from the

JAL-air:4ft

endless hours of transmitter design andoperation of the station was through thesale of parts.

In 1923, Christian was licensed tobroadcast on 833 KC with the call lettersKGC under a new Commerce Departmentclassification for radio stations engagedin broadcasting entertainment.

By 1922, he was broadcasting livefrom the California Theatre in downtownLos Angeles. using his new call letters,KNX. The following year. the stationupgraded its power with a 500 -watt trans-mitter and brought the music of CarliElinor's 60 -piece orchestra into thehomes of Southland radio fans.

Christian sold the station to Guy Earle, owner of the Los Angeles Evening Expressnewspaper. In 1924. KNX broadcast fromthe Hoffman Building at HollywoodBoulevard and Gower. In 1929 the sta-tion's power was raised to 5,000 wattsand three years later was sold again toWestern Broadcasting. which operatedKNX with 10,000 watts from studios atVine and Selma. By 1934 the station.housed at 5939 Sunset Boulevard (nowThe Old Spaghetti Factory restaurant).

broadcast with 50,000 watts, the maxi-mum power allowed for U.S. AM stations.

In 1936, broadcast entrepreneurXVilliam S. Paley purchased the stationfor his rapidly growing ColumbiaBroadcasting System. KNX soon becamethe network's West Coast nerve center.

The popular "Lux Radio Theatre" pro-gram originated from CBS' Vine StreetPlayhouse (now the Doolittle Theatre)."The Screen Actors Guild Show" wasbroadcast from Earl Carroll's Theatre(now the Aquarius). "Big Town," "ThePaul Whiteman Show" and "SilverTheatre" were broadcast from theWilshire Ebell Theatre.

In 1938. KNX opened its present facil-ity at 6121 Sunset Boulevard, which wasdesigned by the distinguished Americanarchitect William l.escase. The buildingat "Columbia Square" still houses a first-rate radio theatre now modified for video-tape storage and for KCBS-TV's use as astudio.

In its heyday, the most popular CBSRadio Network programs included"Irma." "Carnation Hour," "Lucky StrikeHit Parade" and "The Saint."

Before the Golden Age of networkradio came to an end in the mid -'50s.KNX was also the source of popular localprograms.

KNX tried different combinations ofentertainment, talk and news before com-mitting to the all -news format in 1968. Itsaffiliation with one of America's premierenews organizations elevated KNX to therole of a trusted source of news ond infor-mation for Southern Californians.

In the troubled decade of the '90s,KNX's local news staff has reported onearthquakes. riots. devastating fires aswell as gavel -to -gavel coverage of the"trial of the century" from the countycourthouse in downtown L.A. EGO's Music Maestro Marks 50 Years of

Bringing Mozart (and others) to the MassesBY BRENDA REES

It's true: Tom Dixson has lived radio- nearly 50 years of it. As the host of"Evening Concert" on KKGO-FM. Dixsonis the grand old man of L.A. radio, withan intelligent and commanding vocalpresence.

The 80 -year -old announc-er celebrated his birth-day in September: andDixson reminisced aboutthe "lucky accident" thatintroduced him to the

radio world. Through a friend, Dixson"stumbled into radio." He described hisfirst job at KHJ as his "lucky accident."

The eager apprentice gained a solidgrounding in the radio business.

"I was a file clerk: I made soundeffects for radio plays; I also picked outmusic to separate acts in the dramas," herecalled. "I learned so much those earlydays."

Once he became an on -air announcerhe was called upon to emcee dancerecitals, big band performances and evensome early TV shows.

Dixson enjoyed his"freelance" work andnever thought aboutsettling down to asteady gig. In 1946,he joined the

announcing staff at classical music sta-tion KFAC-FM. Dixson expected the jobto last only a few months, but he lovedthe work and ended up staying for 41years. He particularly enjoyed broadcast-ing live from the L.A. Philharmonic -the very place he heard his first concertas a boy with his father.

KFAC-FM was sold in 1989 andbecame KKBT (the Beat). After a briefspell at KUSC, the veteran announcersettled down at KKGO-FM.

While he loves all forms of classicalmusic and is an advocate of program-ming new artists as well as old com-

posers, Dixson is a self-proclaimed"Mozart addict."

"I love the form - the graceful melod-ic feel to his work," the music expertenthused. "Mozart always composed joy- joy to be had no matter what the cir-cumstance. I hear Mozart. and I realizethat life is an adventure waiting for us."

Dixson was only 9 when he heard hisfirst concert - Handel's "Messiah" at theL.A. Philharmonic.

Throughout his childhood in "rural"Brentwood, Dixson attended many con-certs and recitals in Los Angeles, all feed-ing his appetite for classical music.

"People think I've formally studiedmusic, but it's all been self-taught,"Dixson explained. "To me, music was myown discovery - it still is fun and won-derful."

Dixson, who once aspired to be anactor, finds a certain kind of escape inthe aural universe created by the greatmasters.

"Classical music reminds me of aquote from Sir Thomas Beacon: 'Greatmusic releases one from the tyranny ofconscious thought.' That's so true. Greatcomposers take us places we neverimagined."

Tom Dixson

THE OONEV POINT OF VIEWBY THOM LOONEY

Got the top down and the radio turnedup loud. I think that the dudes andchicks running Real Radio KLSX don'tthink that Gen Xcrs arc interested inanything but: wedding disasters or Whatwould you say to 0.J.? or What's yourfavorite ice cream? or What's yourfavorite color? 97.1 KLSX: "HowardStern All Morning-SuperficialNonsense All Day."

America is going nuts for political talkradio. Western Civilization is going downthe toilet; at least 12 guys are running forpresident; blacks and whites and Latinosand men and women and heterosexualsand homosexuals need to talk to eachother and find some common ground -and KLSX is talking about popcorn.

On lots of afternoons. I'm fingering mybuttons back and forth between Johnand Ken on KFI and Tom Leykis onKMPC. Ever since the jury handed O.J.the ball to run back to Rockingham, Johnhas been the angry white male posterchild. He makes the late Alan Berg looklike Richard Simmons. Thank God forKen, who occasionally slips ProzacMickeys into John's water to chill himout. Ken is to John what Edith was toArchie; what Georgette was to Ted; whatMary was to Rhoda; what Jerry Mahoneywas to Knucklehead.

Tom Leykis, on the other button, onlygets angry when he talks about his lazysister or his ex-wives. ( Once a callerasked him: "How would you react ifsomebody stabbed your ex-wife, Tom?"Leykis responded: "I'd ask to see the pic-tures!") He's passionate, but never reallyangry. He's not always liberal - notalways conservative. He's captain of thegood ship Lolly-Leykis, and you neverknow which way it's going to sailbecause Tom thinks for Tom.

I had a chance to sit in on the TomLeykis show recently at Westwood One.

The show airs live at 3:07 p.m. I'ST. Ishowed up to meet Tom at 2:30 p.m. Heshowed up for his nationally syndicatedshow at 3:06 p.m.! He had no notes -just an L.A. Times in hand and a TV seton with the volume turned down. Hisperformance was brilliant. His show itin-erary - every fact and figure spewed -was from the top head of his head. It wasimpressive. I stayed for an hour, and wechatted during commercials. He couldn'thave been nicer. I now consider us closefriends; and I'm dropping his name liber-ally at Hollywood parties.

I also dined and dished recently withRosie Taravella - she with the loudlaugh who used to slave over the hot mikewith Rick Dees on KIIS-FM. As a freeagent, Premiere Network picked her up,and her comedy is now heard on morningzoos and happy chat shows all over thecountry. She's as funny in person as she ison the radio. Rosie had the chicken withmushroom sauce; I had yams and scram-bled egg whites with salsa.

And, as the buzz wears off ... FormerL.A. Raider/popular/happy guy/BobGolic is doing middays at all -sportsKMAX these days... There arc moreSpanish stations in theL.A./Riverside/San Bernardino marketsthan any other format ... I rememberLarry King when he was on in the mid-dle of the night. and only three of uswere listening ... Does anybody listen to1150 KISS -AM?... I like KLOS better nowthan before ... 101.9 KSCA is the onlystation in L.A. that plays SpringsteenSeems like every couple of months,KABC changes the afternoon person ...like Power 106 ... I love glazed twistdonuts with peanut butter filling.

The previous opinions are Looney opin-ions, and they do not necessarily representthe views of all Caucasian -Americans, orthe staff and management of the LosAngeles Radio Guide.
