The Grants to Film and Video Artists program supports Canadian professional independent artists who use

cinema and video as a mode of artistic expression, and provides them with opportunities for creative renewal

and for production of independent film and video works.

The program offers three components: Scriptwriting Grants, Production Grants andResearch/Creation Grants.

To ensure the vitality and continued excellence of media arts, Canada Council for the Arts grants help support

individual Canadian artists committed to the practice of film and video in a film/video as independent artist-

controlled media art forms.

Only independent artworks are eligible to this program. This program does not support work created for the

cultural industries of commercial film and television. Independent means that the artist initiates and is the

driving force behind the proposed project. The artist must maintain complete creative and editorial control over

the work, ownership of the final work and receive a significant part of the revenues generated by the work.

TIN MEN & THE TELEPHONE (Amsterdam, NL)improv/jazz

Tin Men and the Telephone (TM&T) will not stand for banality. Their shows–that challenge the gut as much as

the brain–undermine the monotony and irritation of everyday life by recycling anything from the bleeping of

nuisance devices, to the screeching of overzealous football commentators. Rather than relying upon the jazz

standard as plaything, they find melody in the flirtations of a TV porn-‐‑star or the moos of an unwitting cow, pushing the boundaries of improvisation and the communicative power of music itself. The Tin Men trio is a

dynamic affair, drawing on the harmonic depth of contemporary classical music and modern jazz as much as

the visceral rhythms of hip-‐‑hop and Balkan music. TM&T provide a multimedia performance that comments onmodern society and the role of modern communication, always with tongue planted firmly in cheek, sacrificing

neither intelligence nor wit to make their creatively cogent point.

Personnel: Tony Roe (piano), Lucas Dols (bass), Phil Melonson (drums)

NILS BERG CINEMASCOPE (Stockholm, SE)YouTube jazz

Nils Berg stands in the forefront of Scandinavian jazz. Passing on the tradition of innovators like Lars Gullin and

Jan Garbarek, Berg is now sharing his version of jazz in the global age. Vacuuming his way through YouTube,

he has borrowed videos from all around the world and has written new music to the sound of the clips. Joining

the trio from Stockholm is a japanese koto class, a balafon master from Ghana, and giggling teenagers from a

canteen in Brunei. A stunning piece of art, not to be missed!

Personnel: Nils Berg (sax/bass clarinet/computer/projector/screen), Josef Kallerdahl (double bass/electric

bass), Christopher Cantillo (drums)
