(2) Chemical Delay Firing Device

(a) Descripticn. This device consists of a methl fuze tody, threaded at both eads, a cap (cloaure) with a stud in it, an acid vial, a detoMtor (a !'letal cup filled with heat sensitive explosive and covered with delay pro<2ucine paper), and a non-ele,ctric blasting cap (se~ Fip;ure A-24). When this device is e"ployed >lith a LLU-3/B, no tlastinf, cap is employed, and no stud is used in the cap due to the let1!(thof Lhe device.

(c) Funo tioning

1 In a satchel char~e or mine the metal con with the stud is sc~ewed onto th; fuze body bresking the acid vial. The acld dissolves the paper and oomes into contact with the explosive, causint; a rea,·,tion and detonation which initiates the non-electric blasting ",'sp, ant' in t\U'1l the ""in charge.

" In LLU-3/i:, the fuze aet.ion is the same eX('ert th"t the acid vial is broken by hand, and the acid poured into the f);.ze ann then the cap vi thout Lhe stud is sCl'el:ed onto the firing .icvice •

. (d) l!llJployment. This devic:e has been utilized in satchel charges, and BLIl-3/L, L-ut could be used with almo .. t any ;nine or sabotage device.

()) Chemical/l,lechanic'al Release Sabot,ae~ !Ao>vi.ce

(a) !Ao>scription. The device is in the configur!ltion of a portion of a ?5n'. round sealed in a tin CFill (3.2 inchen high ~nd 75= wide) with a pull "ire extending from the side of the can (heure A-25), How"ver. if the device has been ilctuatcd, the can may ap"car to have only a hole in the side. This hole is laree enough for a puU' \!ire to have been Fulled from tho do\<ice to actuate tho r.hemical releasB fuze. The fuze, ,:·mc.t the section of ?5:'1.,;} r0und are "lnce into the tin crm, lUld the space between the tin c 'n and the ,'ound is nlled :>i th sections of metal rods, "!lils, and 0 thor m18cell&il~!OUS fragmcIltatiop material. .5. !Ao>tonator. Concussion (pElroussion cap, .2:» chl cartridge and a standard non-electric blasting cap ..

(c) FUnctioning

The mechanic,al chemical release fuze is activated by a wire "hich acts as an initiator. The rulling of the relen.se "ire allows a striker to go forward, and crush a vial of acid encased in a .30 caliber cartridge case. Over a p,'rie>d of time, depending upon the, strength of thp- add and "ire (in th',s case approximately 45 ;ninu'~es), i,he acid erodes a wire which is attached to a release handlf th'l.t holds a second striker in a cocked positIon. liben th9 acid ox'oded wire brenks, the release handle is allowed to swIng free. Once the ""inging handle clenrs the cocked striker, the striker goes forward and hits an expedient percussion cap made from a .22) caU'oer (/0116) cartridge. Attached to the primer of the cartridge is a standard non-electric blasting cap which detor, ates the explosive charge in the ?5mm round section.

(d) Employment. This device is most effective for em"loyment in a sabotage role.

(e) Disarming Techniques. Due to the extreme danger associated, and uncertainty with the chemical action on the release wire, this, device should be destroyed in place.

(e) Disarming Techniques. If the exposed glass ampule is unbroken, remove the fuze adaptor.

(5) VC Bursting Cham! cal Grenade

(a) Description. The grenade is similar in confieuration to the standard VC offensive hand grenade (Figures A-2T,A-28,A-29, and A-3D. It is manufactured from light sheet metal and the quality ot: construdion seems to indicate a well developed manufacturing process. The grenade bod;- is of four piece construction, and all joints are well soldered. Water'c)roofing and final sealing is accomplished with a material similar to beeswax. sl Booster t,-pe. I:rimer detonator holder threaded l.nto fuze vith shaped charge booster/detonator slip-fitted vith wax sealer.

(c) Functioning

1 Pressure cycle. Downward pressure on the pressure "head causes the cam.'l1ingarm to ;lithdraw the striker retaining fo~k from the slot in the striker. This action IIl10ws the locked striker to strike the primer detonator, firing the heat senei.tive booster/detoMtor thus detonating the main charge.

~ Pull cycle. A trir >!ire is attached to the striker retaining fork. Pull is a;:>plied to this striker retaining fork causing it to be withdrawn from the slot in the striker. This action Allows the cocked striker to strike the primer detonator firing the heat- sensitive booster/

"detonator, detonating the main charge. 2 "

(d) Safety features. There are provisions for a safety pin to be inserted into the striker ret"ining fork, and~he camming nrm, p,."cluding accidental functioning of the fuze.

lR.Iference 21 2rhe striker r,taining sU!,'Dort pin and sprin'l act as a guide preventing the striker retaining fork from jamming. The fuze can be used simultaneously as a pressure and/or pull fuze and could be used without the pressure head allawing it to be used as a straight pull fuze.
