3 Nights of Halloween
Gretchen and Ryan love Halloween so much that they decided to go trick-or-treating for 3 nights in a row. They decided to collect data on their candy income in the form of percents. Use the data given for each night to decide who was the better trick-or-treater. Show your work for each station to provide evidence of your thinking.
Night 1: The Tale of the snickersOn the first night, Gretchen and Ryan both love snickers and wanted to know what percent of their candy was snickers.
-Gretchen counted that she had 42 snickers, which was 30% of all of her candy.
-Ryan counted that he had 36 snickers, which was 40% of all of his candy.
Questions:How much total candy did Gretchen get? How much total candy did Ryan get? Who had more total candy?
Night 2: Visiting the NeighborhoodGretchen and Ryan both live in a neighborhood with 80 houses. On the second night they tried to visit as many house as they could in 2 hours.
-Gretchen visited 70% of the houses.
-Ryan visited 60% of the houses.
Questions:How many houses did Gretchen visit? How many houses did Ryan visit? How many more houses did Gretchen visit than Ryan?
Night 3: The Dreaded Bad CandyAfter 3 nights of trick-or-treating Gretchen and Ryan compared their total candy and saw that they unfortunately got some of the “bad candy” (hard tootsie rolls, circus peanuts, candy corn, apples, and toothbrushes).
-Gretchen had a total of 500 pieces of candy and 8% was bad.
-Ryan had a total of 450 pieces of candy and 6% was bad.
Questions:How many bad pieces of candy did Gretchen get? How many bad pieces of candy did Ryan get? Who had more bad pieces of candy?
