• Compared to participants assigned to the diuretic, those assigned to the calcium channel blocker had:

– 1 mm Hg higher SBP and 1 mm Hg lower DBP

– No difference in CHD, total mortality, stroke, or combined CVD

– 38% higher risk of heart failure

• Compared to participants assigned to the diuretic, those assigned to the ACE inhibitor had:

– 2 mm Hg higher SBP and no change in DBP overall

• 4 mm Hg higher SBP and 1 mm Hg higher DBP in Blacks

– No difference in CHD or total mortality

– 15% higher risk of stroke

• 40% higher risk of stroke for Blacks

– 11% higher risk for being hospitalized or treated for angina

– 10% higher risk for undergoing coronary revascularization

– 19% higher risk of heart failure
