Unique MD Educational Programs of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health

MD-Masters of Public Health (MD-MPH) is a 5-year dual-degree program designed for medical students who wish to become fully trained in the field of public health. The MPH degree is one year in length and includes focused coursework, immersive field experience and a scholarly capstone project. Students can apply to the MPH portion of the combined program at the same time they apply for medical school or after they have started medical school.

Training in Urban Medicine and Public Health (TRIUMPH) is a Milwaukee-based urban health immersive education program created to provide a specialized focus for students committed to serving disadvantaged urban populations. TRIUMPH students work with faculty mentors and community health leaders to complete a project to improve health and gain a deeper understanding of the urban context, health disparities, and community resources. Students apply for this program after matriculation to medical school and obtain the majority of their clinical training in inner city urban settings.

Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is a combined MD-PhD program that aims to develop future physician-scientists who will make major contributions to the understanding and improvement of human health. This program integrates graduate training in scientific research and clinical medicine, providing a rich diversity of research opportunities. Students apply to this program on admission.

Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine (WARM) is designed to increase the number of physicians practicing in rural Wisconsin and to improve the health of rural Wisconsin communities. WARM students complete clinical rotations in rural learning communities as well as a community health project that addresses the unique health needs of rural citizens. Students apply to this program on admission and must be state residents of Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan or Minnesota who demonstrate a commitment to serve the citizens of Wisconsin after completing their training.

Exceptional Enhancement Opportunities

Community Service – Students take their knowledge from the classroom to life through meaningful service learning experiences that benefit the community and address a recognized need. There is a vast array of opportunities for students to improve the health of our community including MEDiC, one of the longest standing student-run free clinic programs in the country. Our school’s dedication to our community was one of many reasons why we recently received the Association of American Medical Colleges’ highest recognition, the Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Service.

Global Health – Students can choose from many exciting global opportunities throughout their medical school career. Our Global Health Institute offers a Global Health Certificate, support for overseas experiences during the summer after the first year of medical school, inter-disciplinary field courses and international clinical clerkships.

Path of Distinction in Public Health – The Path of Distinction program was created to provide more in-depth, personalized, public health training for interested students. The program requires completion of additional credits of public health electives and a mentored public health project supervised by a faculty member with public health expertise.

Research – Our students have the opportunity to engage with faculty who have active research programs covering virtually every aspect of basic, clinical and public health science. Many choose to participate in our highly successful

summer research program after the first year of medical school. Another option is our Path of Distinction in Research program that includes mentored research for a minimum of 16 weeks, culminating in a first-author publication or thesis. Many research electives or year-long fellowships are also available.

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is recognized as a statewide, national and international leader in education, research, clinical care, community service and global outreach. As an integrated school of medicine and public health, we provide a unified program that incorporates the promotion of health, and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease for our state, our nation, and the world.

Launched in the fall of 2016, the new Forward curriculum is a highly innovative, state-of-the-art educational program for medical students that incorporates best practices in medical education with the following key features:

• Full integration of basic, public health and clinical sciences where students apply important science concepts throughout their education

• Competency-based curriculum with longitudinal sequencing requiring collaboration of medical educators across all years of the curriculum

• Intensive longitudinal coaching by some of our very best teaching faculty to assist students in their professional skill development

• High quality interprofessional and team-based educational opportunities

• Longitudinal public health and system-based practice opportunities with special emphasis on “hands-on” application of knowledge in clinical and community settings

• Early entry into clinical clerkships to enhance integration of basic science knowledge with clinical delivery of care as well as facilitate career exploration and competitiveness for residency selection

• Advanced learning opportunities for optimal internship preparation
