Strengthened positions in existing market segments through innovative, value added products and manufacturing. Increased revenues from new business areas.
Adequate and balanced supplies of forest raw materials for industrial products and energy.
Recognition of the sector as a responsible partner including leadership in sustainability and technology.
Improved policy frameworks and regulations resulting from a more effective dialogue with the political sphere.
A structured and coordinated European Research Community improves effectiveness and effiency.
Benefits for Industry and Forest Owners
5
Benefits for the Research Community
Recognition of the sector as a responsible partner including leadership in sustainability, technology and research.
Stimulated cooperation within, between and along the value chains in the sector.
Participation from motivated stakeholders.
Research cooperation and funding are facilitated.
Support and information services.
New customers and talents are attracted.
6
• strenghtening our industries competitiveness!
• creating best knowledge and scientific skills
• becoming a strong part of the KBBE
• growth within the forest based sector
• creating new jobs, especially in rural areas
What can we expect from the implementation of the Strategic Research Agenda?
7
Why Industrial Joint Research in the woodproducts value chain?
Strengthening the competitiveness of wood products industries with help of science and technology
Intensifying the development infrastructure for wood products industries (Creation of competence centres / knowledge-pools for SMEs)
Creating knowledge-based products and productions processes Innovation based on renewable sources Promotion of the use of wood products – evidence of being
sustainable Intensifying (making more goal oriented) of the cross-sectoral R&D
and harmonising it with the objectives of industry

How to promote our SRA within FP7.
How to work for Programs and Calls.
• In Brussels» Commission» Advisory Group members » EU Parliament
• Through countries (NSGs)» Program committee members» Advisory Group members» Permanent representation in Brussels» Members of the EU Parliament
13
FTP assistance to Proposals
1. Call for Proposals published by EC- FTP action: Forwarding Call-info to stakeholders, support services, registration of Proposals in FTP-database.
2. Evaluation in one or two steps plus hearing organised by EC- FTP action: Mobilize names for evaluation of Proposals
3. Contract Negotiation- FTP action: Support the Consortia, IPR issues.
4. Signing of Contract and project kick-off
5. Project Running time : 2-5 years with periodic peer reviews (annual most common)- FTP action: Monitoring and disseminating progress towards SRA and Strategic Objectives with help of the FTP-database.
14
FTP’s role in creation of projects Clarifying basic rules for FTP
• No funding organisation• No seat in EU evaluation teams
Initiate and facilitate, workshops and special actions
Keep track of FTP projects, establish a database
Support services• Open workshops• Alert for calls• Provide contacts to experts on proposal making
No ranking or quality judgements
Not favouring specific consortia
15

Value Chain representation in FTP
Forestry• Forest owners/CEPF – Birte Schmetjen• Research community/EFI – Risto Päivinen
Wood Producs• Industry/CEI-Bois – Pekka Peura• Research community/Innovawood – Daniel Guinard
Pulp and Paper• Industry/CEPI – Arie Hooimeijer• Research community/EFPRO – Werner Förster

Tasks of the National Support Group – e.g. Germany
Integration of stakeholders • Industries, forest owners, SMEs• Scientific community
Prioritisation of research themes from a national perspective (National Research Agenda, NRA) and coordination with the European SRA
Contact and networking with other technology platforms or similar initiatives (e.g. regional clusters)
Support to project development and consortia building Introduce and inform about the FTP in Germany, e.g. contacts with the
high level authorities, public financiers etc.

25
Implementation Phase in the SRA
From planning to action
A need for a broad spectrum of sciences
An improved climate for innovation
Strengthening education and training
Communication with society
Synergies with other Technology Platforms
26
Innovation
A FTP/Vinnova pre-study regarding innovation in the forest-based industries with participation from Austria, Finland and Sweden.
COST action E51 “Integrating Innovation and Development Policies for the Forest Sector”.
Future initiatives by EU regarding improved Innovation in our sector.
27
Education & Training
Develop education & training to meet challenges in Vision 2030.
• Focusing on university level.• Organise per Value Chain
Make a mapping of the present European situation.
Appoint members of working groups.
28
Conclusions FTP now has to start promoting for Calls to come later in FP7.
In this work the coordinated activities between FTP management and the NSGs are strenghtened.
Active NSGs are necessary to secure national and multi-national funding outside FP7 – probably 80 – 90 % of total.
Through value chains and special actions support the development of programmes and projects.
Establish support services and FTP project data-base.
Increase activity – innovation, education & training and especially communication.
