Database Management Unit process bookDatabase Management Unit staff creates a linked circulating barcode; applies barcode to the front cover of the book or printout; and fill s in the header and left column of the ‘Condition Review & Decision Slip.’ Workflow source: Wounded books. Copy specific information: Call no.; barcode; copyright date; no. of circulations; last circulation date. Search catalog for: other copies; other editions; and other formats. Fill in information that triggers special digitization decisions/handling: multi-part work, etc. Notes whether volume should be considered as ‘protected’: medium rare, rare, or protected. Some Medium Rare criteria: Any volume published outside the United States between 1802-1830; Any books published prior to 1914 which have decorative covers and/or engravings or hand-colored plates and maps ... Some Rare criteria: Books printed before 1801; Books printed in the United States before 1820; Books printed in Maryland before 1870 …  Some Protected criteria: Any physical portfolio that contains loose materials (e.g. illustrations, portraits, maps, datasheets, voting records) …

Digitization workflow

Scan volume, process images Batch ingest images into library IR

(Jscholarship) Digitization staff embed a MARC.xml file

with IR's static URI for each title Metadata &URL for each digitized volume

stored as print format XML in the JScholarship Batch Ingest Log

Embedded MARC.xml file sent to Cataloger

Converting print bib to electronic

1. Retrieve print version in MARCXML format with Institutional repository URL

2. Convert to electronic version using print2e script

3. Convert from MARCXML to MARC4. Use character conversion utility to

translate file from UTF-8 to MARC8 (diacritics)

5. Edit record to meet provider neutral standards

6. Import bib into Horizon ILS 11
