:J.r;f Co",od~The first noteworthy American comedy to be produced by profes-

sional actors was "The Contrast" by Royall Tyler, presented in 1787.Although the play is modeled in form and style on the comedies of Englishplaywright Richard B. Sheridan, Tyler's theme is superiority of Americansto foreigners. In the character Jonathan, the play presents the firstimportant native type - the rural Yankee,

The first play introduces us to a suburban couple who take a suite atthe Plaza while their house is being painted. It turns out to be the sameone in which they honeymooned. A wry tale of marriage in tatters.

The second play shows us a Hollywood producer who, after threemarriages, is looking for fresh fields. He calls up a childhood sweetheart, now a suburban housewife, for a little diversion. In the intervening yearsshe has idolized him from afar and is now more than the match he bar-gained for.

The last scene shows us the same suite with a mother and father.fighting among themselves over the best way to get their daughter out ofthe bathroom and down to the ballroom where she is to be married.

The Red Mask Players has joined the American Community TheaterAssociation, a national organization with more than 2,000 communitytheaters such as our own as members. Red Mask hopes to gain from anexchange of ideas with other ACTA members at regional and nationalconferences and through publications and other services offered by theassociation.

    From the Director:

Nearly a year ago the Red Mask board of directors picked tonight'scomedy for this season. It's popularity was obvious when more thantwice the number needed tried out for the plays. it was decided to useseparate casts for each of the acts to give more people an opportunityto participate.

Mr. and Mrs. John Knapp (he designed the set and she directed "Sun-day in New York") are the proud parents of a son, the couple's firstchild. The baby boy was born January 31, at St. Elizabeth Hospital.Congratulations.

Now I've had the pleasure of working with several stage newcomers, some Red Mask veterans and two Danville Light Opera leaders.

Eight Red Mask members recently completed a lO-week workshopin play direction at Danville Junior College taught by Mrs. Yuki Llewellynof Champaign. They are Liz Miller, Betty Sue Kreidler, Barbara Vinson,Jack Wilkinson, Bill Snapp, Ron McDaniel, Dale Ferrell and Jim Gill.

The low temperatures of January and February couldn't chill thewarmth generated by the cast and drew as they developed the author'swords into a charming presentation. We hope you enjoy the performanceas much as we have enjoyed being a part of developing it for you.
