3 Meet the cooper’s hawk Cooper’s hawk is a medium size hawk. They range in size from 15 to 16 inches with a wingspan of 28 inches. Cooper’s hawk has a short, dark, hooked beak. They have long, thick, tarsi appear short at rest because they are usually covered by belly feathers. Cooper’s hawk have a very long tail that is rounded at the tip. They have red eyes. They have a black cap, blue gray back and upper wings. It has a white breast, belly and under wing.

Home Sweet HomeThe Cooper’s hawk lives in various types of mixed deciduous forestand open woodland, including small woodlots ,riparian woodlandsin dry country ,open and pinyon woodlands, and forested mountainousregions and also now nests in many cities.

Dinner time These birds capture prey from cover or while flying quickly through

dense vegetation, relying almost totally on surprise. Most of it’s prey are mid-sized birds typical prey include robins, jays, woodpeckers, and doves to name a few. They have been known to rob nests for eggs or eat small mammals like chipmunks, mice, squirrels and bats.

Fun Fact/Read More These hawks can also pursue their prey on the ground by half running

and half flying. They were once thought to be adverse to cities and towns but are now fairly common urban and suburban birds. The cities provide plenty of rock pigeon and mourning doves for the cooper’s hawk to prey on.
