Editorial Comment . . .

The year 2011 began with the same fears, doubts, and chaos with which 2010 ended. In spite of the

many voices of reassurance from politicians and political pundits, there has been no marked

improvement in our nation’s current economic situation and predictions are that prices, especially oil

prices, will continue to rise to record levels in the next year, thus exacerbating the problems we

currently face. The political and cultural crises in the Middle East continue to escalate, threatening to

bring the world into another war of epic proportions. The morals of our country, and their

cumulative effect, continue to decline at an alarming rate. All of these events and occurrences

combine to make us wonder if there is any hope of relief on the horizon.

Even though the socio-economic, political, and moral conditions we find ourselves in are growing

worse every day, we are reminded of the words of the angel as Alma was leaving Ammonnihah the

first time: “…lift up your head and rejoice, for thou has great cause to rejoice” (Alma 6:18). These

words came at a time in Alma’s life when he was deeply discouraged because of the lack of response

from the people to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

When we chance to become discouraged like Alma, let us remember that we also have a great cause

to rejoice. The Lord has truly blessed us abundantly in the days past and he will continue to do so

even more abundantly in the days to come as we respond more fully to His Word. When we can see

Zion unfolding before us as a blossoming flower in the midst of an arid desert, how can we not

rejoice?

The days ahead will be difficult; there is no doubt of that. However, the Lord has promised to always

be with us. Zion waits immediately before us and, as long as we walk with the Lord, we can

overcome all things. Some two hundred years ago, the American writer Thomas Paine said: “The

harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.” Zion is our triumph and is worth more than any

conflict we may have to endure.

This year, let us come together, welded together in the same manner of love as the Father and Son

have for each other. Let us become united in our efforts to establish Zion as quickly as possible so

Zion will, at long last, become the fully-formed flower that testifies to the glory of our God.

THE FIRST PRESIDENCY.

GENERAL CONFERENCE INFORMATION FOR 2011

Our fourteenth General Conference will convene at the Conference Center of the Gathering Place in

Independence, Missouri on April 6–10, 2011. As it has been at past General Conferences, every official member

is entitled to participate in all the formal sessions and vote on business which will come before the conference

body. While not all of our members will be able to attend, we welcome all those who can and will provide

Conference seating as well as having some housing space to comfortably accommodate them as well as any

accompanying friends.

Your assistance is requested with filling out the Conference Registration Form (see page 13) in this issue and, if

needed, the Request for Conference Housing form (page 13). To assist our office staff in their planning, we

request your early registration if at all possible. If additional copies of these forms are needed, or you do not wish

to cut them out of your issue of The Hastening Times, we suggest they be photocopied for mailing to the Remnant

Church Headquarters. Your support of registering early will assure you a 2011 Conference Book, which will keep

you informed about the times and nature of all activities. These materials will be available by Wednesday, April 6

at the Registration Table in the foyer of the Gathering Place Conference Center. Saints living in the Center Place

area are encouraged to pick up their materials beginning the week of March 28 at the Church Headquarters.

Those needing Conference housing or airport pickup, and who have not made arrangements privately, please fill

out the detailed Housing Request Form on page 11, or call the Church Office with your specific needs. A light

noon lunch on premises will be available (please make your requests at the time of registration) at $5.00 per meal

per person. At registration, please specify clearly the number of meals desired.

The 2011 budget was approved at last year’s April Conference. Because our tithing income has slightly improved

but still remains below prior years’ offerings, we continue to instruct all departments to reduce their spending

expectations for the physical year 2011. Attending members will be asked to review the proposed 2012 budget

and give their input and approval. Other items of interest to the Conference attendees will be updates on the

development at Bountiful, review of the plans in progress for housing development within the Headquarters

Building, information shared on an evangelism outreach emphasis for the entire Church, as well as other

informational sharing sessions as they occur.

As you make preparations for this 2011 Conference, we hope you will continue to remember and pray for the

sustained devotion and strong health of all of our Saints. It is with these thoughts in mind that we make the

following:

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

On behalf of the needs of the Church and the upcoming General Conference,

a day of

Fasting and Prayer

has been called for the entire membership.

REMNANT CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS

2011 GENERAL CONFERENCE – PROPOSED GENERAL CHURCH OPERATING BUDGET FOR 2012 The following proposed budget for Calendar Year 2012 is respectfully submitted for final review and authorization by the April 2011 General Conference. An extensive process of gathering information and reviewing various proposals has been carried out by the Budget Committee. Undertaking such a task is first based on a careful analysis of previous income and expenditures by the Presiding Bishopric and then projecting income for the coming year. The Budget Committee then reviews formal requests submitted by the various Quorums, Orders and Department heads. Those requests are made based upon proposed programs and goals for the coming year. They are then compiled into the proposed budget and submitted to the Board of Appropriations for review and approval prior to submission to General Conference. As directed by the General Conference of April 2009, the additional step was completed of submitting Family Allowances to the Standing High Council for their advice and counsel. This has again been a challenging year to prepare a budget due to the extreme economic downturn that we have experienced nationwide. 2010 was a good year with income up 3.2% compared to 2009. We have attempted to be conservative as to our income projections for 2012. We are now pleased to submit the results of many review sessions and adjustments processes. It is our belief that this conservative budget, while lean, will allow the Church to continue to fulfill its mission of spreading the Gospel to all who will listen and to prepare and gather a righteous people to Zion. Respectfully submitted, 2012 Budget Committee – Frederick N. Larsen, First Presidency, Chair; W. Kevin Romer, Presiding Bishopric; Ralph W. Damon, Quorum of Twelve. 2012 Board of Appropriations – First Presidency, Quorum of Twelve, Order of Bishops, President of High Priests Quorum and Representative from the Seventy.

This chart gives a preview of the past nine year contribution pattern of the Saints to the three main accounts within the

General Church. In 2002 our membership totaled just over 1,000 persons while through 2010 we have grown to just over

2,400 Saints. The total of slightly over $6,000,000 contributed is a remarkable feat, especially when we understand the

turbulent economic times we are now living through. This figure represents a total average gift of about $2,500 per

member. Although the Remnant Church and its members are suffering through severe financial times, the tenacity of the

Saints to continue to support the work of the Church is truly amazing – and greatly appreciated. Consecrations, tithing,

surplus offerings, oblation gifts, and general offerings continue to reflect the strength of the faith of the Church.

But the giving of our financial strengths is just a portion of the giving of the Saints. So many have given of their time and

talents to the many causes of the Church. It cannot be stressed enough of what we have accomplished these past nine

years, accomplishments that many would have denied could ever have been completed just a few short years ago. The

Gathering Place was purchased and the building completely remodeled. We have created the Retreat Center that now

provides hosing for individuals and families. The Headquarters Building has become “self-sustaining” with backup

generator power for needed heat and lights. Further, food and lodging accommodations for upwards of 300 persons for up

to six months are in place to overcome any disaster which will come our way. We have purchased our Bountiful acreage

in eastern Jackson County and plots for home sites are not being prepared to be offered for sale to the Saints, the very first

of our envisioned Zionic communities throughout this area. We have initiated stewardship programs overseas in order to

further assist those Saints in securing better lives for their families and the Church in those places. As we continue to

reach out and support the Divine instruction we have received from the Lord, we more fully understand the willingness of

the Lord to bless His children in direct proportion to their response to His Word.

As this New Year breaks upon us, it would be our fervent prayer for the good health of the Saints and urge everyone to

take advantage of this opportunity to become fully accountable in our temporal stewardships.

DEADLINE FOR RECEIVING OR PROPOSED CONFERENCE RESOLUTIONS

Proposed Resolutions for General Conference action need to come to the deliberation of the various Quorums and Orders,

or from the deliberative actions of congregations or departments. All proposed Resolutions need to be written and

submitted to the First Presidency at Headquarters by March 15, 2011 in order that they can be reviewed and organized for

printed inclusion in the General Conference notebook which will be given to every Conference registrant.

COMMUNITY PREPARATION “Preparation for a community of my people should be developed utilizing land in Eastern Jackson County.”

R150:6a In March 2007 the Bishopric authorized the creation of the Bountiful Development Corporation for the purpose of acquiring land and developing community. A second corporation was authorized and created in 2009 called the Remnant Development Corporation, LLC. Both corporations were deemed necessary in Missouri in order to provide the legal basis and protections necessary to consummate the tasks of building Zion. On May 26, 2008, after receiving support and direction from the Joint Council and Board of Appropriations, the Bishopric acquired 197 acres of land in eastern Jackson County at a purchase price of $1,280,500. A down payment of $500,500 was made and Joe Ben and Violet Stone carried a promissory note for the balance. Further payment of $600,000 was made on January 26, 2009, leaving a balance due of $180,000 which was paid on March 26, 2010. This land is now held in the Remnant Development Corporation, LLC as authorized by GCR 907 and is under contract for farming corn and soybeans. Work has been ongoing with the neighbors, the Jackson County Planning Commission, and the

Jackson County Legislature towards gaining approval of our plans to build a community on the property. The current plans have been adapted based upon feedback from our neighbors and county officials. The first phase will include seventeen (17) home sites allowing easements for continued farming operations. Once those seventeen homes are completed, we will seek county approval for further subdivision of the property to include an additional seventeen (17) home sites for a total of thirty-four (34) sites when completed. Survey work has been completed on the initial seventeen home sites and the centerline for 3,500 feet of roadway has been staked out. We have also obtained a permit for the new left turn lane off Highway H onto the property. We are now at a point where we will begin selling lots on a first-come, first-serve basis. Additional information will be shared at April’s General Conference for those who have an interest in further development in this, our first Zionic development effort. We currently have six families that have expressed their interest, willingness, and desire to purchase one of the lots.

Further Development Potential of the Headquarters Building

At the request of the First Presidency, a study was undertaken in 2010 to analyze potential future uses for the Headquarters Building. The feasibility study had two objectives: 1) How the use of the building fits with our Zionic development efforts, and 2) How to make the building self-sustaining from an expense standpoint. The plans for Bountiful Development have changed over time as a result of our working with Jackson County officials. Our desire was to have an all-inclusive community in eastern Jackson County. However, it has become clear that senior citizen housing at the Bountiful location is not going to be approved by the county officials. With that in mind, we began to look at the Headquarters Building as a location for senior housing, thus allowing our seniors to participate in Zionic endeavors. The Headquarters Building would allow senior involvement in Lunch Partners, the Clothes Closet, Food Pantry, Art programs, Winholtz Reading Room, the Church

Library, General Church Office activities, and all Center Congregation programs. The Headquarters Building is in a Historic District section of Independence, MO. We have determined that this brings us the potential of receiving Historic Preservation Funds for our development efforts. Preliminary plans have been prepared by architect Jim Gamble for twenty (20) to thirty (30) condominium apartments, depending upon the size of the units, including indoor parking for twenty-one (21) vehicles. The plans have been reviewed by a Kansas City construction firm who specializes in the rehabilitation of older buildings. They have prepared estimates to compete this work. We will be performing a survey of Church members to determine if there is enough interest by our senior Saints to justify moving forward with this project during General Conference in April 2011. We look forward to further insight and comments from the Saints regarding this venture.

GENERAL CONFERENCE – JANUARY 2011

Throughout the many years of our history, it has often been stated that the Saints do not need much encouragement to gather together in fellowship and worship. It seems that whenever the doors to our sanctuaries are opened, there will be found a multitude of people enjoying the communion of each other’s company. This past January found this a concept tested and true.

At the request of President Frederick N. Larsen, the Remnant Church was called together this past January 14

through the 16 to undertake the orders of business presented to it because of the impending personnel changes in the First Presidency, the Quorum of Twelve, and the Presiding Bishopric of the Church.

As readers will recall, insight and direction to these quorums was received by President Larsen at the October Priesthood Assembly in Kirtland, Ohio. At that time, High Priest Samuel R. Dyer, Jr. was named to succeed retiring President Lane W. Harold as a Counselor to the First Presidency. Further insight received at that same time indicated that Apostle James L. Rogers was to be extended his release from his Apostleship and Bishop Daniel D. Keleher was named to succeed Bishop Albert V. Burdick as a Counselor to the Presiding Bishop. In order to provide time for these men to assume their new roles in time for the April General Conference, the need for the January General Conference became imperative.

Under the outstanding direction of Leo Gussman, the Restoration Chorale opened our conference services on Friday night with a wonderful mixture of Restoration music as well as several compositions by Brother Gussman and others. Their music brought such a ministry to the assembled Saints that it was nigh impossible to want to leave the Conference Center at the close of the service. This night’s ministry only set the tone for the days to follow.

As is our practice at our General Conferences, we begin each morning with a prayer and testimony service. On Saturday morning, under the guidance of the good Spirit, Patriarch Ernie Shank challenged the Saints to be “on time” to the service as well as be ready to stand and offer their prayers and their testimonies, to not be negligent in these duties. These were words well received by everyone as the following services found the Saints ready and willing to gather, prepared, for each individual activity of the weekend.

Saturday’s abbreviated business schedule found us recognizing the calls of ministry to the aforementioned men, supporting them in those new responsibilities, and paying tribute to those men who were being released from their prior duties. The assembly of Saints stood in unity to display their appreciation and love for each man who now begins a new avenue of ministry for the Remnant Church and its Saints.

High Priest Terry Patience of the Missouri Valley, Iowa congregation brought the preaching ministry to close the Saturday activities. He was supported by the priesthood of that congregation and brought a very strong testimony of the gospel and its importance in the life of the Church as well as to the world.

To close the Conference, Sunday morning found us first celebrating the feast of the Lord’s Supper with each other, and then receiving from Brother Larsen his Presidential Address. True to the spirit of the entire weekend, the Communion Service was focused on the Conference theme of “Be Ye Ready.” Patriarch/Evangelist Carl VunCannon, Jr. brought his words of challenge and uplift with that familiar ever-present energy that we have come to know so well of his ministry.

Brother Larsen took the time to share his view of the Church and its direction in the days ahead as well as challenging each Saint toward a higher consecration of life and service toward the Kingdom that lies just ahead of us. We look forward to the upcoming April General Conference and urge each and every member to set this time apart for his attendance and support in prayer and fasting. So much remains to be done, so much to be accomplished, and there appears so little time to bring it all together. May the words of Jesus in His prayer to His Father on that fateful night in Gethsemane be the counsel for each of us today: “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that thou has sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one.” (John 17:20-22)

“…When it is evening ye say, The weather is fair, for the sky is red; and in the morning ye say,The weather is foul today; for the sky is red and lowering. O hypocrites! ye can discern the face of the sky; but ye cannot tell the signs of the times.” (Matthew 16:2, 3) Today we still hear some using a familiar adage, “red sky at morning, sailor take warning; red sky at night, sailor’s delight,” to forecast the weather. When there is an east wind, we predict that rain is on its way. As the Lord said to the Pharisees and the Sadducees, He also might say to us today: “Ye can discern the face of the sky, but ye cannot tell the signs of the times.” (Matthew 16:3) He called the Pharisees and Sadducees hypocrites because they could not discern the more important signs of the times. Experience taught me when still a young boy growing up on the farm that when in summer a

dark cloud begins to form in the northwestern sky a thunderstorm is soon to follow. I learned that when such signs appeared, it was time to seek shelter or get a drenching. Those storms, while brief, frequently carried with them strong shifting winds, heavy rain, and occasionally damaging hail. We, like those of biblical times, have learned to read the signs of the sky but are much less discerning of the signs of the times. To be labeled a “hypocrite” is offensive to our sense of self worth. To avoid such pronouncements, we need to be observant of the “signs of the times” and make the necessary preparations to avoid the coming perils. Jesus warned His disciples of the “leaven” of the Pharisees and the Sadducees. (Matthew 16:7) This “leaven” was their preoccupation with the things which were physical and immediate, their need for signs, and for the letter of the law.

Apostle Oakman once said something that I remember as follows: “The spirit of the law is always more demanding than the letter of the law.” The Pharisees and the Sadducees were asking of Jesus a sign from heaven that He was the Christ. Jesus asked His disciples; “But whom say ye that I am?” Peter’s answer that He was “the Christ, the Son of the living God” was a result of the Spirit of revelation. It was not physical signs, but rather the inward manifestation of the Father who is in heaven that allowed Peter to know the truth of Jesus’ identity. In like manner today we are to be able to read the signs of the times. We see the physical signs but we interpret by the manifestation of the Spirit of the Father within us. This separates the modern Pharisees and Sadducees from the Saints. There are dark ominous clouds forming on the northwest horizon again. But these clouds are not made of dust particles and water vapor. Rather they are made of nation rising against nation, wars and rumors of war, abounding iniquity, love waxing cold, deceivers, tribulation, and winds of false doctrine. Matthew, Chapter 24, foretells the destruction and the end of the wicked. Many voices are being raised warning of the coming storms. Dr. David Jeremiah warns of a coming economic Armageddon. Glenn Beck daily warns his listeners to prepare for the “perfect storm.” Jesus warned, “Take heed that no man deceive you.” (Matthew 24:5) The winds are beginning to shift, the temperature is dropping and the ominous clouds are overhead. Have we heeded the signs of the times and obeyed the manifestation of the Father’s Spirit? If so, we take comfort in these words, “…he that remaineth steadfast, and is not overcome, the same shall be saved…and whoso treasureth up my words, shall not be deceived.” (Matthew 24:11, 39) In Matthew, Chapter 24, Jesus warns in the latter day of many deceivers, of false prophets, and of false Christs who will seek to deceive even the very elect. Paul counseled Timothy that “the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears….” (II Tim 4:3) Doctrine and Covenants 63:2b warns the wicked, “Let the wicked take heed, and let the rebellious fear and tremble;

and let the unbelieving hold their lips, for the day of wrath shall come upon them as a whirlwind, and all flesh shall know that I am God.” Doctrine and Covenants Section 94:5d warns, “behold, and lo, vengeance cometh speedily upon the ungodly, as the whirlwind, and who shall escape it; the Lord’s scourge shall pass over by night and by day; and the report thereof shall vex all people….” Further from the Doctrine and Covenants, Section 105:9b,10a,b, “Behold, vengeance cometh speedily upon the inhabitants of the earth—a day of wrath, a day of burning, a day of desolation, of weeping, of mourning, and of lamentation---and as a whirlwind it shall come upon all the face of the earth, saith the Lord. And upon my house shall it begin, and from my house shall it go forth saith the Lord. First among those among you, saith the Lord, who have professed to know my name and have not known me, and have blasphemed against me in the midst of my house, saith the Lord.” Knowing that such will be present and the above warnings given, how does the Saint remain steadfast? In the Ephesian letter, Paul counseled that the perfect man is no longer tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine. (Ephesians 4:13,14) It would seem apparent to this writer that our protection from the evil in the approaching storms is to be steadfast, not tossed to and fro, nor carried about with winds of doctrine. The virtue of enduring sound doctrine is critical amidst the din of teachers having itching ears. The whirlwinds that are coming will blow the unsteady off course. If the whirlwind begins first upon His house, then the Saints must have pure hearts and clean hands. Their worship must be in Spirit and in Truth. Paul advised the Galatian saints, “…though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” For Paul said, he neither received it of man, neither was he taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. (Galatians 1:8,12) The pure doctrine of the gospel is not after man. Jesus said, “My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.” (John 7:16) The pure doctrine is manifest by the Spirit in the hearts of those who have the commandments of God always before their eyes. This Spirit of Truth is: “…knowledge

of things as they are, and as they were, and as they are to come.” (Doctrine and Covenants 90:4b) Isaiah said, “Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk and drawn from the breasts.” (Isaiah 28:9) To be weaned from the milk and drawn from the breasts is to have learned to love and trust the commandments. Where love and trust in these gifts of God exists there the senses are exercised to discern both good and evil. One of the fundamental principles of the Restoration faith is “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5) Paul advised the Roman Saints, “…mark them which cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.” (Romans 16:17) Paul also counseled Timothy to “Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them; for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.” (I Timothy 4:16) It is recorded in II John 1:9: “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God.” When men fail to understand that they are accountable unto God to keep His doctrine and ordinances pure---can apostasy be far behind? One of the marvelous heritages of the Restoration faith is that it believes in “all truth” and recognizes the privilege and responsibility of every member of the Church to make the appeal for truth and wisdom from the Divine. Our faith encourages an open-minded approach to truth and that revelation should not be restricted to outworn forms of worship, but that our intelligence is left free always to find more truth. Our creed, “all truth,” means that our minds are not shut to any truth; that our dogma is not to be limited to our past, or even our present concept; that all truth is divine when discovered and is part of our creed (S. A. Burgess, Saints Herald, Vol. 101, p. 10). We recognize that we “see through a glass darkly” and that there is much yet to learn. Because our comprehension of the truth expands only as we are able to understand, God reveals His truths “precept upon precept, line upon line;… here a little, and there a little…” (Isaiah 28:10) The Saints find hope in the expectation that the Lord

has yet more light and truth to break forth from His Word. The doctrine of the Church must be centered in the teaching and instruction of the Lord Jesus. When points of view or opinions are put forth as authoritative without adequate grounds, dogma is generated. When such “new doctrine” is established by edict, men are guilty of building the “iron bedstead.” (Israel A. Smith, Saints Herald, Feb.1, 1954) Over the years many have tried to force the Church into making ex cathedra pronouncements about points of doctrine that were disputed by individuals or groups within the Church. President Joseph Smith III in an editorial published in the Journal of History, Vol. 12, p. 418 said,

“The attempt to force the church into the declaration of a formulated creed failed as heretofore. There was no disposition to build the “iron bedstead” upon which to stretch the devotee. It was equally apparent that the body had little sympathy with any effort to destroy the integrity of the revelations of God to the church. It was considered that to declare upon this point at the demand of one, involved the precedent to declare on another point at the demand of someone else; and if for these, then at the requirement of any who chose to rise up and demand a declaration of dogma, the church would have to yield, the result of which would be to finally eliminate the liberty of individual inquiry, quench the teaching of the word of God, and practically deny the office work of the Spirit in leading unto truth. Once involved in the intricacies of such formulated declarations there could be no abiding lines of demarcation drawn where belief might safely rest and dogmatism assume the rule. It was and is far safer to affirm the books of the church, as with one so with the other, than to build a creed.”

Today there are again efforts to establish “iron bedsteads” based upon the opinions of individuals. The wisdom and reasoning of the late prophet is to this writer of equal merit to the Church today as it was then. The work of the Holy Spirit is to lead men to the truth. Genesis 6:64

records, “Therefore it is given to abide in you, the record of heaven, the Comforter, the peaceable things of immortal glory, the truth of all things, that which quickenth all things, which maketh alive all things, that which knoweth all things, and hath all power according to wisdom, mercy, truth, justice and judgment.” When the opinions of men are established into creeds, the effectual working of the Spirit of Truth is suppressed and denied and the agency of the human mind is stifled. The safer ground, as the prophet said, is to affirm the books of the Church. The Book of Mormon suggests the points of our Lord’s doctrine enable us to come unto Him and be saved. “Wherefore, they shall come to the knowledge of their Redeemer, and the very points of his doctrine, that they may know how to come unto him and be saved.” (I Nephi 4:19) The points of His doctrine enable the human creature to know how to come unto Him. Knowledge of these points alone does not bring mankind into the presence of God. It is the coupling of knowledge with proper response that brings individuals into His presence. This proper response to the points of His doctrine results in man’s salvation and return to the presence of the Father. Paul’s epistle to the Hebrews recorded the following counsel: “Therefore not leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God. Of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.” (Hebrews 6:1, 2) Here we find identified six of the principles of the doctrine of Christ. These foundational principles teach mankind how he is to come unto Him and be saved. By building upon these principles, sons of God are enabled to go on unto perfection. Paul warned the Hebrew Saints that the earth would be cleansed with fire. (Hebrew 6:7)

“For that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; therefore they who bring not forth good fruits, shall be cast into the fire; for their end is to be burned.” (Hebrews 6:8) Good fruits are the harvest of those who build upon the foundation of the principles of the doctrine of Christ. Our God is faithful and is not unrighteous and will not forget the work and labor of love of His people which they have done in His name. We are counseled by the apostle, “that ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” (Hebrew 6:12) This latter day calls for a people who diligently build upon the foundation of the principles of the doctrine of Christ—who go on unto perfection. The powers of the darkness of this world are arrayed against those who desire to go on unto perfection. The Saints need be reminded that it is through faith and patience, by hope and perseverance, and by the mercies of God that they inherit the promises. The anchor of our hope is both sure and steadfast, and has already entered into that which is beyond the veil, even Jesus our Lord. In succeeding issues of The Hastening Time it is planned to include a series of articles focused on the foundation of the principles of the doctrine of Christ. We remember the words of Nephi’s teaching that “the very points of his doctrine, [are] that they may know how to come unto him and be saved.” (I Nephi 4:19) We do not wish to establish dogma or creed, but rather that the body of Christ may focus itself on those principles that bring us into the presence of the Father. The storm clouds are gathering in the northwest, the winds of doctrine are shifting, and the love of men is waxing cold. Those who will not be blown off course and lost in the mists of darkness must hold fast to the One who said, “My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.” (John 7:16)

By Beckie Hogan I am excited to tell you about the miracle that has happened in Lizton, Indiana on Saturday, Dec. 18. If I told you that a piece of property sold that Saturday at an auction for the same price as it did in 1979, and my family and I were thrilled, you would probably wonder what kind of “financial crazies” we were! I have found in my life that when I am going through a particularly difficult, strenuous, faith-building experience that I have no control over, it is much more pleasant to look back and see the hand of God than it is when we are going through the experience and trying to be positive and unafraid. This was my fourth real estate transaction with the Lord in charge—how could I doubt! But under these circumstances, my faith waivered. After my dad passed away on November 2, my sisters and I were working through our grief but also working hard to get our mother back on her feet and figure out where she was financially. While we had to make some very difficult decisions, God blessed and magnified our efforts in ways that we will never forget. We decided that the family business they had for thirty-one years needed to be sold. We talked to an auctioneer who looked at the place and commented, “None of us is going to get rich off this sale if we can find a buyer. And we need a cash buyer.” The chance that a bank would loan on the property was slim to none. We all agreed that we only needed enough to pay the bills and get my mother out from under the stress of running a business and we would be satisfied. It was obvious to us that it would take a miracle to sell the property the week before Christmas in this current economy, in a very small town in Indiana,

snow on the ground, the temperatures frigid, thirty-one years of accumulated junk, and a building 100 years old needing major repairs. My dad always thought he was an electrician, a plumber, a handyman—and he was none of the above. Duct tape and wire were his favorite tools. The property also sat between a high school and a cemetery with a creek running through the middle of it which placed it in a floodplain—not exactly the most “sellable” situation. My sisters and I had worked out all the scenarios we could imagine on what would happen if it sold for different amounts—or if it did

not sell at all and mom would have to continue to make insurance and tax payments on a business that was no longer bringing her an income. We had a minimum amount in mind but, if

offered, would have sold it for much less. During this time, my husband, Mike,

reminded me that God had another opportunity in which to enlarge my faith. I tried to be positive and unafraid, but there were a lot of negatives and very few positives in this entire situation. The morning of the auction brought about a dozen onlookers but only two real bidders. Just as the auction was starting, the phone rang. I answered it and a woman inquired about the auction and wanted to send someone one over to bid also. I told her we were just starting and by the time she called back we were done. The two bidders bid each other up to a price that we had thought would be the maximum we could expect—and then the tears began to flow as the bids went further—up to the price my folks had

paid thirty-one years ago! Mom had enough to pay the bills with a little left over. We had a cash buyer that closed the following next week. It has been a difficult two months since my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Your prayers have been a blessing. God knows our needs and loves us even when we are at our weakest. He can show us His power and that has been proven to me once again. His timing is amazing. We had an opportunity to visit with the man who bought the store and he seems to be just the right person. His business is construction so the work ahead did not seem as enormous to him as he grew up in a similar situation when his father

opened a grocery store and they lived in the back in a small apartment, just like the arrangement at mom and dad’s business. Miracles do happen! As a side note to this experience, while I was home a few days before I left for the auction, our daughter, Rachael, and her husband, Matt, invited us to dinner and shared with Mike and me that they were expecting their first child. Does it surprise anyone that the baby is due around my dad’s birthday in August? Thank you for the many prayers for our family in Indiana. Now we can join forces to pray for the baby that will join our family later this year.

By Kathleen Haley

The other day, while driving down the road, I saw this question on a church billboard: “HAS GOD FAILED YOU?” At first glance, it took my breath away. What right does anyone have to assume that the Lord has failed us? How can we put ourselves above God? How can we suggest that we are on the same level as God? To have God fail us, we would have to be on his level, wouldn’t we? God has given us everything. GOD expects us to live up to His standards. He has told us and advised us to follow Him. He has shown us the way by sending His Son to set the example by giving His life for us. How can He fail us? Really, the shoe is on the other foot. We have failed Him. So many times and in so many ways,

we have come short of His standards. We try so hard to love and obey Him. We show our love by the things we do for others, by the things we say,

and by obeying His laws. But we are human, and so many times the things of the world tempt us, and we stray. The Lord knew this and He gave us a way to redeem ourselves. If we repent of our ways and return to Him, forgiveness is there. The greatest gift that He could

give us was OUR AGENCY. He also said that He would never take that away from us. What a gift! Thank you, Lord, for allowing us to return to you when we stray. The question is not, “Has God Failed You?” but “HAVE YOU FAILED GOD?”

A member of a certain church, who previously had been attending services regularly, stopped going. After a few weeks, the pastor decided to visit him. It was a chilly evening and the pastor found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for the pastor’s visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited. The pastor made himself at home but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After some minutes, the pastor took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone. Then he sat back in his chair, still silent. The host watched all this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember’s flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead. Not a word had been spoken since their initial greeting. The pastor glanced at his watch and

realized it was time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow, once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it. As the pastor reached the door to leave, his host said, with a tear running down his cheek, “Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery sermon. I will be back in church next Sunday! We live in a world today, which tries to say too much with too little. Consequently, few listen carefully. Sometimes the best sermons are the ones left unspoken.

The Lord is my shepherd….that’s a Relationship! I shall not want….that’s Supply!

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures….that’s Rest! He leadeth me beside the still waters….that’s Refreshment!

He restoreth my soul….that’s Healing! He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness….that’s Guidance!

For His name’s sake….that’s Purpose! Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death….that’s Testing!

I will fear no evil….that’s Protection! For Thou art with me….that’s Faithfulness!

Thy rod and Thy staff comfort me….that’s Discipline! Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies….that’s Hope!

Thou anointest my head with oil….that’s Consecration! My cup runneth over….that’s Abundance!

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life….that’s Blessing! And I will dwell in the house of the Lord….that’s Security!

For ever….that’s Eternity

NEWS AND UPDATES FULL COLOR ISSUE: With this issue of “The Hastening Times” we are pleased to present to our Saints and friends our first issue totally dedicated to full-color pages. This change has long been anticipated and we trust our readers will enjoy the change in our magazine’s format and color. We welcome your comments and suggestions regarding the publication of “The Hastening Times” and further solicit articles and writings from the Saints on issues of interest to the Church. Enjoy this edition and let us know your thoughts

RECENT DEATHS: We are saddened to inform the Church at large of the passing of two devoted members this past November. Elder Jerry Miller passed away in Carthage, MO on November 22, 2010 after a lengthy illness. Brother Jerry and his wife Barbara have been long-time members of the Carthage congregation where he brought a peaceful and rich ministry to everyone. Jerry was a gifted writer of poetry and loved living on “the farm,” helping Barbara raise their four children and then caring for their many grandchildren. He will be missed deeply for his quick smile and wonderful testimony of the Kingdom. Sister Mary French passed away on November 20, 2010 at The Groves in Independence, MO. Mary was a member of the Center Congregation but, due to her infirmities, was unable to attend church services for quite some time. Mary will always be remembered for her quick wit, ready smile, and her deep faith in God. Further, she “could not wait” to meet “Brother Moroni” or to see “John the Baptist” as well as all of her other friends and relatives who she knew were waiting for her.

MARRIAGE ANNOUNCMENT: We are pleased to announce the marriage of Brother Arthur Allen and Joann Palmer of Marlin, TX. They were united in marriage in Sweetwater, TX on February 8, 2011 with Patriarch/Evangelist Fred Church officiating. Brother Arthur is the pastor of our congregation in Marlin and we look forward to

the support that Sister Joann will bring to his life and ministry in the days ahead.

OVERSEAS ACCIDENT: Recent communication with Brother Srinivas in India indicates that he was involved in a single vehicle motorcycle accident on Feb. 5, 2011. He was crossing an unguarded railroad crossing when he lost control of his small motorbike and fell, injuring his face and nose. He is recovering and no lasting effects are anticipated, but the prayers of the Saints are always encouraged for his recovery.

NEWS FROM OREGON: Seventy Don Dunn has reported that a place for worship in Eugene, OR has been rented and the Saints there will begin holding services in March. The place is located between the three priesthood families we have there and will give them the opportunity to invite friends and acquaintances to a more formal place of worship. We urge the Saints to remember this endeavor in their prayers and especially the ministry of our families: Elder Chuck and Sister Joanie Barber, Elder Doug and Sister Glenda Rouse, and Seventy Don and Sister Linda Dunn.

WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENT: We wish to share the news of the upcoming wedding of Ralph Damon and Marci Turner on May 29, 2011. It will be held at the Worship Center at the Gathering Place at 5:00 pm. All the Saints and their friends are invited to attend this celebration.

AUDIO CD’S AND CASSETTE TAPES: These have arrived and can be ordered for the January 2011 General Conference. These would include the classes at 9:45 am by Lane Harold and the 11:00 am class by Robert Ostrander. Call 816-461-7215 or send your requests to Attn: Mike Lytle at 700 W. Lexington, Independence, MO 64050. DVDs are available for all services of this conference except the two classes and the Service of Recognition.

PHILIPPINE UPDATE: We are very aware that, for the past year or so, there have been voices from both inside as well as outside the body of the Remnant Church that have been sharing concerns over alleged sightings of Brother Rommel Desoloc in the Philippines. As we now have in our possession a certified death certificate, we can now share with the body of Saints that, at long last, these rumors and innuendoes have been found to be groundless and without merit. As the membership will recall, late last winter we were apprised of the tragic death of Brother Rommel on February 18, 2010. Through the information reported to us, he was confronted by armed individuals during an evening worship service in the Angelo area of north Mindanao. He allegedly was challenged with the statement, “If we shoot you, will your Jesus save you?” Witnesses then related that Brother Rommel repeated a quotation out of the book of Philippians and then was shot four times, succumbing to those injuries in a hospital in Tagum City, Mindanao. It was several months later in that summer of 2010 that the rumors of his “sightings” began to surface and be shared with some of the members of the Remnant Church. Since that time there has been an ongoing exchange of information that has, in many ways, confounded many within the Church and cast doubt upon the work and ministry within the Philippines. We now have in our possession a copy of the official death certificate of Brother Desoloc which gives the exact cause of death as it was originally reported to us last year. It further gives the date of his death exactly as it was shared with us by his brother, Elder Rene’ Desoloc. Although our hearts are still heavy because of the death of Brother Rommel, it is with a great sense of relief that we share this update with the Church-at-large, trusting that those who have shared their concerns in this matter may now find comfort in knowing that we

now have confirmation of that tragic incident. We now trust that the ministry in the Philippines may progress without further delay and the hearts of all Saints might rest easier and not be burden by false reports and unfounded rumors. A visit with these Saints is being discussed for March with Apostle Ralph Damon and Seventy Bruce Terry perhaps making that journey. The prayers and concern of the Saints is encouraged for these two men as they venture out into that portion of God’s vineyard once again.

“THE HASTENING TIMES” SUBSCRIPTIONS: “The Hastening Times” is sent to every member family of the Remnant Church and to others who request it at no cost to them. In an effort to defray some of the expense of our printing and mailing, we are asking those who receive “The Hastening Times” to prayerfully consider a contribution towards this cost. At today’s rates, it costs $2.60 to print and mail every issue, bringing a year’s total cost to $10.40. With the attached envelope, we are providing the opportunity for you to assist in our quarterly outreach. Please consider your support and return your contribution in the envelope provided. Thank you for your generous response.

HEADQUARTERS OFFICE CLOSINGS: A new policy has been approved by the First Presidency of the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for the Headquarters offices. Like Lunch Partners, the Remnant Church Headquarters offices will be closing on those days when the Independence, Missouri Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather. This decision is being taken for the safety of all office personnel. Members should be aware that office telephones will not be manned on those days and are being asked to be patient for a reply to any messages left upon the recorder.

Sperry Branch – Sperry, OK Sister Pat Whiteman reporting November found us losing two members of our congregation within days of each other. Elder C.H. Whiteman and High Priest Steve VanMeter assisted Bishop Kevin Romer with the funeral services on Nov 3 for Sharon Hanna, mother of Megan Romer. The service was held at the church and the women served a lunch to the family. Sister Winnie Teel, long-time Sperry member of the church, died Nov. 6. Seventy Don Carter officiated at her services held at the church Nov 11. He was assisted by Elder C.H. Whiteman.

Several men from the congregation attended the men’s retreat at the Blackgum campgrounds.

Our branch business meeting was held on Nov 21.

Nov 28, at 10 a.m. Hank Jackson Webb, son of Mitchell and Carrie Webb, was blessed by Seventy Roger Tracy and great-grandfather Elder C.H. Whiteman.

In December we were blessed with the ministry of two Apostles: Apostle Don Kite preached Dec 12 and the service was followed by a soup lunch. Dec 19 was our annual Christmas program, directed by Cynthia Tibbitts. That day we also received the preaching ministry from Apostle Ralph Damon, followed by our annual holiday dinner.

Two of our youth attended the year-end holiday retreat in Independence.

January found Leighona Genet Cook coming home for the holidays. She is stationed in Hawaii while her husband Andrew is serving in Iraq.

Sister Evelyn Jean Hallford died January 1. Her services were held at the church on Jan. 5, presided over by High Priest Steve VanMeter and Elder C.H. Whiteman. She is survived by her husband Charles and son James. Sister Hazel Griggs died January 2 after a short stay at the Skiatook nursing home. Her funeral was held at the church on January 6, presided over by Seventy Roger Tracy and Elder C.H. Whiteman. Both of the women had been active in the Sperry congregations during their lives.

A planning session was held Jan 2 in the evening to plan activities for the New Year. From that session came beans and cornbread being served before Sunday evening class Jan. 9., Don and Donna Carter served beans and cornbread to those gathered for class.

Magic Valley/Treasure Valley Branches – Elder Jerry Wilhite and Sister Barbara Mitchell reporting.

The Magic Valley Branch has extended its effort into its community outreach

through a free meal program. The branch had met earlier with concerns

regarding our current single food basket concept, hoping to build a broader outreach. Since our branch does not have facilities to cook meals for the needy, we decided to purchase

thirty Shari’s Restaurant gift cards. Shari’s

25

Page 26: 1-Cover Page 46.2 · 2015-11-04 · 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM All Priesthood Session (W. C.) Membership Session (C.C.) 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM Presentation on new Website and Church Properties

matched our cards dollar for dollar as well as providing free drink coupons also. Representatives from the branch went to the unemployment office and also met with the WIC supervisors. A code number was developed that qualifying parties could use when they contacted our Presiding Elder. He would then know that they had been screened for qualification to receive these gift cards. This method allowed us to help many others in need, as well as provide a means to distribute our Church literature with the gift cards. We, as a branch, are quite pleased with the outcome as we were able to feed twenty-two families and some interest toward the Church has been generated. We would suggest to other branch presiders that this is truly a wonderful missionary outreach tool.

The last weekend in October found the women from the two Idaho branches, Magic Valley and Treasure Valley, gathering together at Sister Debbie Kollecker’s home for an outstanding retreat. The sisters who were able to attend the Women’s Retreat at the Center Place this past September shared of their experiences there. We shared laughter and tears as we listened to stories about their travel. Those who traveled together experienced a deep sense of unity and got to know each other in a way they had never before known and truly felt “as one.” For those of us who weren’t able to go to the Retreat, it was especially nice to hear about the classes in such detail. Our sisters took fantastic notes and shared what they learned about writing a prayer without the words “me,” “I,” or “my.” What a great way to focus a prayer outside of ourselves! Another challenge was the idea of timing our public prayers—getting to the point and being specific. We enjoyed hearing some of the sisters give examples of this. We broke for lunch and filled ourselves with wonderful stew and chili and then closed our retreat with an enlightening story and discussion on forgiveness. Our day

left us full, spiritually and physically. We are so blessed to have such wonderful sisters to share our lives with.

We also wish to share that the Treasure Valley Branch has had new visitors the past two months. Matt Parrott and his family have been attending along with Morgan Wigle and his family. These two families have been known to many of us in the branch for many years and it is good to have them worship with us.

We further celebrated the marriage of Keith Fuqua and Denise Fuchs on December 12, 2010. They were married by Priest Tony Hill and a wonderful reception followed the ceremony. We wish the very best for Keith and Denise in the many years of marriage that lie before them.

Southern Indiana Branch – Floyds Knobs, IN Sister Rebecca Paris reporting.

We had a great year in 2010! Spirits are up and we are looking forward to even more amazing work that the Lord has in store for us in 2011!

Right off the bat, we held a planning meeting for things we wanted to accomplish for the year and many of those were met.

We once again ran the Sunshine Preschool at our church. With 7 students we are able to raise about $8,000 for the church. Esther Paris and Janice Swafford faithfully help teach while we pull our curriculum from our experienced teacher, Cheryl Ault. Cheryl was blessed to find a full time teaching job at a local school so Rebecca Paris has been our full time teacher.

In the beginning of Spring, we held our annual barbeque and yard sale. Tom Swafford's cooking expertise was enjoyed by a lot of good folks in the community and our congregation. All our ladies led by Anita Disponett and Janice

Swafford, helped supply the meal with sides and desserts. After a long, hard day of sales and cooking, we were blessed to have raised several thousand dollars.

Dick Paris continues to keep our lawn cut, Esther Paris keeps our church clean, Wes Ault does our bulletins, Merle and Sharon Randolph faithfully make recordings of our services, Danelle and Robbie Woodruff organize our youth activities, and Brian Caffrey has taken over changing our marquee sign. Everyone has a job at our congregation and we wouldn't make it without their help! We have elected Richard Paris as our Pastor again and he is still leading our Adult Sunday School class. Some people would say that our group must not like change!

In October of 2010 we celebrated the baptism of Kevin Woodruff. His excitement at taking this public step of faith was testified of by all who attended. He was ready to become a member of the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints!

Charles and Wanda Bickel celebrated several milestones this year. They both celebrated their 80th birthdays and together they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. One unexpected thing happened when they both broke bones at the same time together. Talk about love! We are pleased that they are both healing well and getting out and about.

2011 is off to a quick start as well. We were blessed to have Apostle Ralph Damon and his family, Marci and Maggie, come and evangelize in January. One of our faithful, members Frank Shuck, had knee replacement, but he didn’t let it keep him down for long! Five days after his surgery, he could be found in church listening to Apostle Ralph Damon for Saturday worship. We admire Frank’s dedication and the effort he made to escape from his rehab home to be with our visiting minister and us.

Please know that you will have our prayers this year that the Lord will direct your paths. We will be listening for His voice and aiming to be His people this year.

First Michigan Branch: Sister Kathleen Haley reporting

Despite a cold, snowy start to a typical Michigan winter and a nagging flu bug that seems to be touching everyone at one time or another, we are hanging tough and doing our best to live the kind of lives our Heavenly Father expects.

This December has been exceptionally blustery. We were forced to cancel church on the first Sunday and move our Communion Service back a week. On the Sunday before Christmas, we held our branch business meeting. Our Presiding Elder, Seventy Robert Murie jokingly said that if he did not hear anyone decline his or her name, they would be the branch officers. There were no declinations and the officers continue as before, along with very few changes to our budget for the year.

Elder Mark Owens gave our Christmas sermon, comparing the birthing process of Mary’s day to the modern procedures of today. What a difference. He drew comparisons to all the baby showers of today with the gifts of the Magi and pointed out that their gifts were indeed the first baby shower and “men,” not women, planned it. It was an interesting point.

We opened the New Year with another beautiful Communion Service. We were privileged to have guests from Alaska, Bob and Sandra Murie’s daughter Erin Wilson and their granddaughter Reese were visiting for the holidays. We were very pleased to see them.

On January 9, Brother Murie gave a wonderful

sermon on “Hope.” The following week Elder Owens was scheduled to preach again but due to so many being sick, services were cancelled.

January 23 found us cancelling services again due to the cold weather. Brother Murie was able to attend the Seventy Retreat in Blackgum, OK over that weekend even though he was very sick. He came back with glowing reviews of that experience.

On February 5, the men of the branch attended a “Beast Feast”—an exotic wild game dinner at the Baptist Church in Rochester Hills, MI. Meats of all types—snake, bear, kangaroo, elk, turtle, “turduken,” bison, etc., were served. Bobby Bonner, a former major league baseball player for the Baltimore Orioles who is now a full-time missionary in Africa was the guest speaker.

May God continue to bless us as we strive to serve Him.

Rogers Branch – Rogers, AR: Sister Lucy Minardi reporting.

Our Church family has certainly been blessed with many visiting ministers these past few months. They have added to the inspiring sermons preached by our own priesthood members.

The winter has brought a lot of illness to our congregation. Dorothy Brown continues to need our prayers for her afflictions. She is bed-ridden and in poor health. Gloria Browning’s many health problems do not keep her down for long but your prayers are much needed and appreciated for her each day. Chuck and Sharon Petentler recently suffered from the flu bug but have returned to church to enjoy their church family. Dick Dollen continues to improve each day from his recent health problems.

Laura Minardi recently moved to Owosso, OK to attend school. She has been looking for a job in the area and needs prayers to help her find one. She enjoys being a part of the Sperry Congregation and her homesickness has finally subsided. We are thankful that she feels at home in Sperry. Her brother A.J. and his wife Bonnie have settled in Mount Vernon where A.J. works for the V.A. home as a Physical Therapy Assistant. They are expecting their first child, a boy, in the near future. The congregation is looking forward to a baby shower for them in the spring.

Our Christmas program was held on December 19. Most of the church members participated by sharing music or inspiring stories and poems. Dylan Parrish wrote a touching testimony of his experience involving his recent scare with a heart problem. He was blessed by the healing hand of our Lord. A pizza lunch was enjoyed after the program by the congregation.

A burglary in November resulted in the theft of our church’s sound system. It has since been replaced and we continue to pray to God to watch over our little church and are extremely thankful that the perpetrators did not cause extensive damage.

We held an election for our church officers and everyone was re-elected to their positions. Our budget meeting was held on January 23 and found that the finances for our little church are good and once again we can see results of our many blessings.

We are looking forward to a visit from Seventy Roger Tracy on January 30. After the service, we will have a pot luck dinner. We pray for continued strength and guidance for our small congregation. ▪

I have read in Matthew 5:43 about going the extra mile for someone in need. I have not only read this in the scripture but I have witnessed it, almost daily, by Pastor Jim as the Lunch Partners clientele call him. These people, from every walk in life, come into the Lunch Partners facility to share in a hot meal and receive both physical and spiritual strength. Jim is the one they look to for counsel, or ask him to pray for them, or ask for administration with the consecrated olive oil and laying on of hands. Last year we had a number of our clientele pass away. It was brought to Jim’s attention that they were not given a funeral service. He was asked if he would conduct such a service, after hours, at the Lunch Partners cafeteria. I have never attended such a solemn, peaceful funeral service as Jim conducted. A number of the “street friends” attended and participated in this service and expressed how they would miss their individual friends. Truly, they are as “one family” and Jim has made it as such. There was made available the Remnant Church’s tracts on “Life After Death” for any who desired to take one. Jim picks up donated produce from local grocery stores and organizations five and six days a week, come rain, snow or sunshine. Did I mention snow? These past few months have kept Jim triple-busy, clearing sidewalks and steps to prevent anyone from falling. I don’t know how Jim does it but he always seems to find time to do whatever he can for our service. Jim is also that extra pair of hands and strength to lift heavy, hot trays from ovens to the steam table. He also frequently gives people rides to work at Lunch Partners or takes them home. He’s also been known to change a flat tire for a lady worker at Lunch Partners. What a Christ-like man! Superman, you are no match for Jim Gates!!!
