This course is best suited to serious home worm farmers who wish to produce product or worms on a hobby basis. The mini pit is an ideal size to take house-hold food waste from a 3-6 person household.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Informative session - Tour and intro• Informative tour of Australia's largest urban worm farm.• 1-hour slide show on worm farming basics

Morning tea

Informative session - Assembling your worm farm• Slide show on how to assemble a mini-pit• Demonstration on setting up a new worm bed, bedding ingredients, inoculating compost worms into a new bed (including how many to use for a specific area and enhanced breeding techniques.)

Lunch

Information session - Identifying worm types• How to achieve the best results depending on your intended food source, location and climate. • Identifying commercial worm varieties - and identifying pests and threats to worms.• Identifying worm capsules (eggs) through their various stages prior to hatching.

Afternoon tea

Demonstrative session - Looking after your worm farm• Demonstration of feeding the worms including, what, when, how to & how much food to apply and when the correct time it is to feed again.• Monitoring pH in worm beds and adjusting pH when necessary. • Watering - why, when, how much and water quality. • Harvesting compost worms - why and when is the correct time to harvest or remove worms.• How to use worm bi-products, solid castings & liquid bio-fert, to improve soil and plant health.
