Screw Point Types

Drill Point (DP)Fasteners with a point capable of drilling into medium to heavy gauge steel . Drill points are classified as #1 through to #5 with a #5 point being capable of penetrating thicker gauge metals.

Sharp Point (SP)

For interior linings such as Gypsum. The Sharp Point has an especially sharp point having multiple threads or Dual Threads occurring within the body portion of the screw. One of the threads gradually decreases and fades into the tapered portion of the shank and terminates. The other thread decreases in diameter and fades nearer the pointed end of the screw. Pre drilled holes are recommended when securing claddings.

Winged Drill Point (WDP)

Self drilling point specially designed to enable the fastener to fix exterior claddings such as timber, fibre cement and composite boards to metal without the substrate rising to the top of the screw while the metal is being drilled, and without the need to pre-drill. The drill point drills the substrate as the wings counter bore the hole larger than the thread diameter. With the hole being larger, the thread will not engage into the substrate. After the self drilling point drills through the cladding substrate, the wings break off upon contact with the metal.

Tri-Lobular® Thread

This thread rolling screw uses a Tri-lobular® design to cause the grains of the mating material to reform to the thread contour rather than be sheared during tapping. This action causes a stronger fit.

Head Types

Flat HeadLow profile head useful for steel framing applications, where the screw must fit flush within the dimple to allow for a smooth finish for cladding or lining materials over the top.

Wafer HeadLow profile head, especially designed to suit FRAMECAD frames, as the head fits neatly into the dimple of the frame. The screw fits flush within the dimple to allow for a smooth finish for cladding or lining materials over the top

Hex Washer Head (HWH)

High torque head for metal to metal applications, great for frame to frame, frame to Truss and Truss Assembly connections.

Hex Washer Head with Neoprene

Washer

Same head type as the Hex Washer Head however on the other side of the built in washer there is a removable neoprene washer designed to give a waterproof seal around the fastening and hole. Most commonly used in roofing and exterior clad-ding applications.

Bugle HeadDesigned to eliminate paper burrs in gypsum with a secondary ring under the normal bugle head, this affectively reduces paper burrs for a cleaner finish.

Countersunk Head

Designed to seat easily into engineered timbers, fibre cement and MGO Board for a smooth finish.

Countersunk Ribbed

Countersunk head with cutting ribbs on the underside to allow the head to embed properly into substrates.

Pan Head High torque head for metal to metal applications.

Drive Types

X Drive®

Developed by FRAMECAD® for metal to metal applications. The X-Drive® delivers much higher torque without the cam out that occurs with a Phillips Drive. It delivers more stabil-ity when driving screws, minimises wear on driver bits and reduces operator fatigue. The X-Drive® also offers “Bit-Stick” without any magnetising.

Phillips DriveThe classic drive, built and designed to “cam out” preventing the fastener from overdriv-ing into gypsum or MGO Board. While appropriate in applications such as drywall, is not always ideal when assembling steel framing.

Square DriveFour-sided recess. Higher torque than a Phillips Drive which is required when framing LGS Framing.

Hex Drive

A Hex screw head with high torque is ideal for metal to metal applications. The large extruding Hex gives additional head strength and allows for more torque and stability making it easier to drive. Due to the size of the head, it can’t be used in applications where other products need to go on top of it. For water tight sealing use a bonded washer.

Torx Drive

Torx heads Screws are designed to prevent cam-out. Better torque-limiting automatic screwdrivers for use in factories. Rather than rely on the tool slipping out of the screw head when a torque level is reached, thereby risking damage to the driver tip, screw head and/or workpiece, the driver design achieves a desired torque consistently. Increased tool bit life.

How a Winged Drill Point (WDP) Works

Winged drill points are screws with 2 wing like tabs located just above the drill point. When fixing claddings, such as fibre cement board or engineered timers to steel that is 0.75mm or thicker it is important to use a screw that has “wings”.

The wings create a clearance hole removing the requirement to pre drill holes. The clearance hole maintains the screw rotation speed and allows the drill tip to penetrate the steel quickly with-out “jacking” (lifting) and potentially weakening or cracking the board.

Substrate

Clearance hole as a result of wings

Wings break off when contact with LGS made

LGS Steel

Installation guidelines

Driver speed recommended 0- 4000 RPMDriving too slowly may result in failure of wings to break off.

When selecting fasteners, you need to balance economics with the environmental conditions and lifetime expec-tancy. The FRAMECAD® screw range is available in different grades of protective coatings to suit a wide range of environmental conditions.

Corrosion can be caused by industrial pollution, moisture or salt spray in coastal environments or sand with mois-ture in desert environments. Even if a screw is used for internal applications, it may be exposed to a corrosive environment during the construction process. Some internal fasteners are exposed to moisture over their service life in applications such as bathrooms and other wet areas. It is also important to consider ease of access, as maintenance or repairs to fasteners may be impossible once the construction of the building in completed.

The table below is a guide to the corrosion resistance required for different building applications.

Corrosion Testing Methods

Salt Spray Test (SST)

A common testing method to determine the corrosion resistance of plating and finishes. Fasteners and materi-als to be tested are placed in a fog chamber and with an atmospheric mixture of water and sodium chloride that is maintained at 100% humidity. The test results are expressed in hours of expose without evidence of normal corrosion.Tests are conducted in accordance to ASTMB117.

Kesternich Test

A corrosion resistance of materials and fasteners which involves repeated condensation and drying cycles. Fasteners are submitted to 18 to 28 degrees and 75% humidity for 16 hours, after being exposed to a con-tained sulfur dioxide atmosphere at 40 degrees and 100% humidity for 8 hours. The results are measured in the number of cycles of exposure completed without evidence of normal corrosion.

E-Coat - Corrosion Resistance

E-coat is the latest generation in screw coating / corrosion resistance technology and addresses many of the issuesassociated with standard coatings such as recess fill and abrasion.

E-Coat Advantages:

• No recess fill enabling more torque transmission due to higher driver engagement.• A thinner film build, which doesn’t clog threads and allows screws to be driven with less effort.• 1000hrs + SST corrosion protection.• Scratch and chip resistant increasing service life as the protective coating is much less likely to be damaged during installation.• Environmentally friendly application method.

Roofing - EPDM Washer installation

Do not overdrive. Over -compression will damage the washer and reduce its effectiveness.

Too LooseSealing material is not visable: not enough compression to seal.

Too TightWasher is deformed; sealing material pressed beyond fastener edge.

CorrectSealing material slightly visible at edge of washer - assembly is water tight.

EPDM Washers

Using high quality EPDM washer is a critical part of having a watertight roof or cladding. Because the washers are small and relatively inexpensive, their importance in a roofing project is sometimes overlooked. A poor qual-ity washer can result in enormous costs if it is made of inferior material. The washer is vital in maintaining the integrity of the roofing system. A failure in the washer can mean at best replacement of the screws, or at worst, considerable damage to the entire roof and building structure.

FRAMECAD® use only premium EPDM compounds for its range of roofing screws, ensuring a high quality fastening solution for steel frames roofs and metal claddings. sidings.

FRAMECAD® roofing screws incorporate the use of ‘DEKS” EPDM washers. Deks quality roofing washers are chosen globally by major fastening suppliers to ensure their fastening systems provide a weather tight seal against wind, rain, heat and sunlight.
