Smart sensorsHuman survival on earth is impossible without the sensory

organsNature endowed man with a sensory system vital for his existenceThe receptive field of the human sensory

organs is limitedSensors extend the human receptive field

beyond the limits of the human sensory

organsSensors tell us what is

happening in the environment that

surround us Sensors play major role

in industrial, medical and environmental observation and

monitoring

Smart sensorsEarly sensors were simply measuring

devicesModern sensors

integrate ICT capabilities leading to

the emergence of family of sensors

known as smart sensors

Smart sensors can capture, store, process,

transmit and communicate

information in formats comprehensible to

humans

Advances in nanotechnology are

helping produce more miniaturized and

multipurpose sensors for both medical,

industrial and environmental applications

Smart sensors have revolutionized our

perception of the world in which we live and

better understanding of our body behavior

Connected objects in their various forms and applications are in large party based on smart sensor capabilities

Intelligence Hierarchy

DATA (FACT) INFORMATION KNOWLEDGE INTELLIGENCE (WISDOM)

Page 9: 1 From Sensors To Intelligence Dr. Joseph Agu Business Critical Consultant Hewlett Packard France Email: joseph.agu@hp.com Telephone: +33672991828

9

DataSensory stimuli

perceived through our senses

Signal readings from sensors

Set of discrete facts

Metric (having value and unit of

measurement)Example: The

temperature is 40 °CHierarchical, object and relational data models, data warehousing, etc

Page 10: 1 From Sensors To Intelligence Dr. Joseph Agu Business Critical Consultant Hewlett Packard France Email: joseph.agu@hp.com Telephone: +33672991828

10

Information

Comes from providing context to data

Fact that has been given meaning

Example: The temperature of my body

is 40 °C

Data warehousing, dimensional data

modeling, business intelligence, etc

Page 11: 1 From Sensors To Intelligence Dr. Joseph Agu Business Critical Consultant Hewlett Packard France Email: joseph.agu@hp.com Telephone: +33672991828

11

KnowledgeIs a concentration of

information on a subject matter

Comes from appropriate collection & analysis of

information Example: The normal human body

temperature is 37 °C, the temperature of my

body is 40 °C

knowledge can also be created through the synthesis of known

informationExample: The

temperature of my body is higher than normal

Can be gained from experience

Artificial intelligence, expert systems, etc

12

IntelligenceMakes use of knowledge to create value through

correct and well-informed decisionsInvolves having the

application and contextual awareness to

provide strong commonsense

judgment Example: I should see a

doctor because my body temperature is higher than normalData warehousing, dimensional data

modeling, business intelligence, etcDecision support systems, human support, system automation, etc

Smart Devices ExplosionBillions of smart devices (particularly Smart phones) have been sold and many smart phone based applications and services are being developed

4G mobile broadbandHigh band connectivity is widely available, particularly in urban areas, with faster 4G broadband services being introduced

Cloud ComputingCloud-based technologies are providing ever-increasing data storage, processing, aggregation, visualization, and sharing capabilities

Social media networkSocial media gives us a mechanism to collate data from sensors, to share data and to derive information from the data among Internet communities

Health Care SystemsThe convergence of sensor and ICT technologies is giving people the capacity to generate information about their health and well-being, participate in the management of their own healthcare with their clinicians and allow them to control and exploit information about them

BASNBody area sensor networks is the fundamental basis for the mobile healthcare systems (mHealth systems). Sensing, social networking, smartphones, and connectivity will have a profound effect on medicine.

The French artificial Experiment

Harnessing sensor Intelligence

The same tiny sensors that measure air pressure and altitude in an airplane or satellite are also in the artificial heart

This should allow the device to respond immediately if the patient needs more or less blood

The device could save millions of lives and beats almost exactly like the real thing using electronic sensors to regulate heart rate and blood flow

Thanks to the latest electronic sensor technology used in guided missiles, the heart can also respond instantly to changes in blood pressure and flow and adapt the heart beat rate accordingly

Data miningThe adoption of data mining, particularly pattern-matching and machine-learning techniques, will help unlock the hidden patterns and associations in sensor data. These trends could give us the first glimpses of collective intelligence.

The Internet of ThingsSensors provide the data streams upon which these applications can be built. As the value and impact of these new wave of applications are realized, the need for both improved and new sensor technologies and more applications and services will grow

Continuous miniaturization of sensors and low-cost systems on chips (SOCs) will continue to fuel future development of IOT

Sensors play a key role in connecting the physical world (temperature, C02, light, noise, moisture, etc) with the digital world. The success of IOT will be driven by applications that deliver tangible improvements to people’s everyday lives

The IOT is rapidly becoming a reality. Advances in ICT technologies have made possible the connection of more and more devices to the Internet.

This is leading to a new wave of applications that have the potential to dramatically improve the way people live, learn, work, and entertain themselves.
